at least here in the city one thing i hear about is for theives is to steal garage door openers from unlocked cars and come back later when no one is around to rob the joint because people just dont notice the opener is gone or they think they lost it etc and then bam someone steals your record player so keep your cars locked even in the driveway bromigos take that to the bank
I live in a small town with a lot of churches.   A couple years back we had a rash of car break-ins while people were in church.   I guess the thieves took anything with an address on it and then went and robbed their houses the following week while they were attending services, since they knew they wouldn't be home and how long they would be gone.   The lesson is don't go to church.

Not quite a heist that gets made into a movie, but pretty genius nonetheless.

That's usually a scam from some local energy company trying to get your account number and sign you up with the plan.
Yeah had that happen once, guy was real forceful, needed to see my bill to make sure I was getting the proper rate

told him I did online bill pay so they should just be able to check my account.  Got all huffy and said someone would be back until I cooperated.  Never saw anyone else

we also have a lady that uses her mentally handicapped kids (now adults) to sell candy for a fake charity.  Pretty sad, for whatever reason it keeps going on.

I an guessing that the call the cops crowd are all ok with coming the new "Doorbell Dirk" internet meme for calling the cops on all the social media sites, losing your jobs from the doxxing and being a huge negative result on your name on Google forever after doing so.

Yeah I know that one too, “you’ll be buying our gas at a fixed rate” or whatever, but those guys usually come while it’s light out  and have some sort of ID. Heck even the local window company has their people wear an ID tag that says wallside windows. I don’t know if he was supposed to distract me while his buddy tried the back, if they were trying to get info to transfer service or something, maybe they really worked for a gas company and I’m just a jerk.

I'd be fast asleep at that time.

My friends grandma gave her energy bill to someone, for about a year they charged her for her gas. So did the gas company, as they were the ones supplying the gas. They just started sending her a bill, so she paid it. Friends dad saw the bill one day and asked “what’s this,” otherwise she may have kept paying it. People suck.

TWO UPDATES!

1. The wife posted last night to some neighborhood website where they talk about lost cats and such. Someone a few blocks away had their car prowled last night and posted a very blurry picture. Not sure if it's the same person...the ladies are on the case though. Enhancing the photos. We'll see what comes of that (nothing).

2. A hour or so later the wife texts me a picture of our basement window shattered. WTF. I'm in a meeting, excuse myself to call. Pretty worried. Turns out the guy we have come once a month or so to do some landscaping stuff shot a rock into the window with his edger or something. She kind of buried the headline there  .

One could open a window and see what they want without opening the door or calling the cops.  If they don't go away, call the cops, but never open the door.  I don't even like opening the door for someone in the daytime if I don't know them.  All it takes is for someone to pull a gun on you and force their way in.

Very anticlimactic story...  could you do a re-write where the intruder has pink hair and needs a ride to York?

JK... Glad you and your neighbors are OK
:goodposting:

PS - In the 18 years Ive lived in my house, I've had strangers knock at my door twice. It was Jehovah's witnesses both times.

Yes, Fonzie, we are all aware of Next Door.  Stop acting like you're too cool to know what it is.  Typical Seahawks fan, always trying to look cooler than they are. ;)

Twitter account Best of Next Door is great humor, fyi.

Do y'all not have NO SOLICITING signs on your front door?  Works wonders for us.  If by chance I do get somebody peddling something at the door, I just point to the sign and smile.

I had a buddy who had some crazy naked lady banging on his door in the middle of the night.  He lived in an apartment complex with his wife and they had just moved in.  They talked to the lady through the window.  She was clearly high on something.  She curled up in a ball on the sidewalk and went to sleep.  Police/Paramedics took her away.  Turns out the girl was one of his neighbors.  He said he saw her a few weeks later like nothing happened.

Also had a similar instance at my parents.  When I was in my early 20's, I lived in their guest house.  Mom was home alone and called me saying a lady and two guys were asking to use the phone saying their truck broke down and their cell phone wouldn't work.  They wanted to use our house phone to call someone.  I thought it was suspicious, and walked over in the dark and came in the back door (had a key).  Also brought my 12 gauge just in case.  When I walked into the room and the lady saw me, she quickly looked at her cell phone and said, "Oh look, we have signal all of a sudden.  I think we're good." and they left.  If someone wants to use your home phone, don't let them (because you'll have to open the door).  If you want to help, offer to call someone for them if they give you the number.  You can do that without opening the door.

Ditto.

I used to stay up till 1 AM on weekday nights.  Now, if I make it till 12 on nights where I stay at home, it's cause for celebration.

Have never been on it a day in my life. Too busy wasting my time in here.

Fonzie wasn’t the cool one by the way, that was Potsie.

I have no idea what this is.

I had my doorbell ring once, the Sunday night of Memorial Weekend about 11 pm. I'm home alone. I go to the door, there's nobody there. I figure it's kid knocking and running away for a laugh. I go out the back door, slide around to the side of the house and stand in the shadows for a few minutes, waiting for the kids to come out of some bushes of one of my neighbors. After about 10 minutes, I go step out of the shadows and walk toward the front of my house. Across the street is white Dodge pickup that starts up and tears up the street.

Flash forward 2 months. The night before 4th of July. Late that night, the doorbell rings. Hairs on the back of my neck are all standing on end. I went straight for my gun and went to the door. This time the truck was already up the street.

Flash forward 2 months, the Sunday night of Labor Day. My neighbor across the street is in his car, lights off and I'm in the shadows on the side of the house. We wait out there for about 45 minutes at about the time this person(s) should be coming to my house. Nothing. That was about 10 years ago. Never happened again.

I feel like maybe these guys remembered Memorial Day weekend only after ringing the doorbell on 4th of July weekend. They didn't wait for me to appear to leave, they were already taking off before they saw me. I also figure they come to houses, assuming people are out reveling. Since we go to the in laws .4 miles away on these holidays, I was home earlier than a lot of people would be. That and both of those parties for our family is more of a day party.

I have people knock on my door all the effing time, usually just clean water action or some window/siding/roofing company offering a free estimate. Occasionally it will be some kids selling anything from $5 candy bars or once a kid had a “picture she drew and was selling for a fundraiser.” I’m down to help schools but some of these are obviously schemes.

One time I had this kid about 17-20 come up at 9:00 in the dark. Says he’s with some gas company, “needs” to see my bill so he can save me some money. I don’t know what kind of info he could glean off of my bill, but I’m not one to just hand over documents to some pushy kid. No ID lanyard, no papers or anything, no tablet. 9:00pm. Sure.  “Ok, hang on” I say. Went back inside and watched tv until the next commercial, then returned to the door.

“I’m having some trouble finding it, my wife moved everything when she was cleaning. Hang on I’ll keep looking, I love saving money, so don’t go anywhere.”

I go back inside, open some drawers in view of the door so he sees me looking, then go back to the tv. I figure “ok, he’ll be gone.” Nope, 10 minutes later I hear a knock, now he has a friend with him. I say something all upbeat like “oh, are you the boss?” and kid2 just mumbles something. Now I start asking questions.

“Do you have a flyer or anything with info?”

no

”what’s the name of the company again? Is there a website?”

no

”do you usually have to work so late? 9:00 for a door to door guy would probably piss a lot of people off.”

uh

”How do you save me money? How does that work? Can you explain it?”

not really

”should I call the cops now?”

”hey, why are you running away?”
This all seems like a lot of unnecessary effort and wasted time on your part.

Oh probably. I figured even if it’s a legit solicitation I’d let him stand out there for knocking on my door at 9:00. Then I wondered how far he would take it, or how long he would stand there. My neighborhood gets a lot of solicitations, especially in the summer, sometimes 2-3 in a night, but obviously not every night. It’s what little revenge I can have for dealing with 5 minutes of calming the dog down, just to have someone on my porch asking me for money for charity or for paperwork that isn’t their business or some other random person out there. Let me have my petty revenge man.

Good story. I heard something similar a few years back. This time it was the church of the NFL. A lot of Packer fans go to the home games during football season. Easy targets for crooks roaming the empty streets of Green Bay.

Had someone ring doorbell in middle of night once. Looked out window and they lingered talking for a while. Ignored and the eventually went away. Next morning I went out and saw our garage door was open. Same people showed up later and said they came home late from work and saw our garage door was open and wanted to let us know so no one would steal anything. We did have a break in in that house later as did quite a few houses around us. Didn't take much, just looking for a grab and go to sell at pawn shop for drugs probably. Guessing some neighborhood kids were casing all of us and breaking in while we were at work. Very frustrating. Moved shortly after that into another home we bought in same neighborhood (renting before). Made sure to get ADT at the new place.
How much does ADT cost? I’ve been considering it for awhile now. Is it a monthly cost? Anything extra??

Hey, go nuts.

While you're at it, I suggest turning on the sprinklers.

They should move.

I was at my girlfriends (now wife) apartment in the east village, nyc, the morning of her bi-annual fashion show (she's a designer, used to have her own line and have fashion shows for her collection)- it's a big, important day and I was helping her out. we were expecting a delivery early in the morning to her apartment of a bunch of... wheat grass? IIRC which she was going to use to line the runway- the delivery was expected at like 5:30am.

we awoke to her apartment buzzer going off. half asleep, she stumbled over to the buzzer and let them in... poking her head out to greet them. she lived on the ground floor and her apartment door was at the end of a longish hall at the back of the building, but facing the buidling entry door which she could see when looking out her door. I was stumbling over to help her receive the delivery when I hear running/stomping footsteps coming down the hall outside while she slammed the door shut.

purely coincidentally, some junkie had buzzed hers (and proably every door in the buidling) and she had inadvertently let him in thinking it was the wheatgrass delivery. the guy was banging on her apartment door screaming to let him in. I took a look at him through the peephole to guess if he might be carrying a gun (way too strung out and desperate looking to ever hold onto something that would cost as much as a gun) and then yelled while looking through the peephole,

"hey hon- go get me the baseball bat and call the cops. I'm going to beat this guy senseless and tell them it was self-defense"

junkies eyes got even bigger, and he took off running/stomping back out the building.

There's probably better options out there now. I pay $56 a month for monitoring. I don't have any fancy cameras with them. I'd shop around and get something with camera set up if I were starting over now.

Went to their website after posting and they do ADT+Video for like $58 per month.

Some of my friends in Durham had someone knock on their door late at night last year. The house beside them was being rented out to college students, and they had had a party. My friends said the girl was talking nonsense, and thought she was probably on drugs. A friend of the nonsense talking girl came walking up their sidewalk when she saw her at the doorway. She said her friend had been asleep, and then vanished, so they went out looking for her since she was a known sleepwalker, especially when she drank. Anyway, the girl was sleepwalking.

In the summer I was woken up by someone knocking on my door(i haven't installed a bell yet) around 3:00 in the morning.

As I get up in a fog my dogs are up and barking I get down and see 2 people standing in front of my door a man and a woman I'm in my underwear dazed and confused I just open the door and they say "are you guys OK"?

I'm still confused and the lady says we live down the street and we heard your carbon monoxide detectors going off for the last hour and weren't sure if everything was OK.

As I start to come to I realized that the basement detector (bedrooms on 2nd floor) is going off and  I start explaining that all my detectors seemed to be wacky as I change the batteries and it still keeps going off so I went downstairs unhooked it and went backup and said thank you.

Apparently both of them are part of the town's volunteer paramedics and they were getting ready to call the fire department which would have resulted in them probably breaking down my door to search for dead bodies.

Not all middle of the night knocks are bad i suppose.

I solved this problem by installing a nest doorbell camera. The last time 2 guys came to my door, I was able to tell them we don't allow solicitation all from the comfort of my office at work on my cell phone. They have no idea if we are home or not.

Several years ago in this area 2 guys and a girl murdered and robbed an old guy. The woman went to the door and when the old guy opened it, the two guys jumped him and best him to death.

Anyone messes around in my yard at night I am calling the cops asap
