Leagues that trade draft picks (2 Viewers)

I run a 10 team, redraft/2keeper league, standard, no ppr

We start QB(3 max), 2RB(4max), 2WR(4 max), TE(3max), Flex(RB-WR-TE), K(2max), D(2max)

18 total roster spots 

We have changed the league from dynasty to redraft/keeper about 3 years ago with the option of trading draft picks only of the following year. This year they can only trade 2017 picks but trades must be even for roster purposes so if you trade a player and a pick you must receive a player and pick in return

Does anyone know any way to try and slow down the trading of draft picks so teams are getting stacked?

Some owners are willing to give up 2nd and 5th round picks next year for players of teams that are 1-7 and 2-6 

The trading of picks seems to get worse each year

Does anyone have any rules in their league to limit this or slow it down? Thanks

Next year those 1-7, 2-6 teams will have extra value and bounce back, and the teams that traded picks away for a championship run will have to recover.

Not to mention that competing without a 2nd and 5th isn't impossible.  Folks lose 1st and 2nd rounders to injury all the time, and manage to stay competitive.

Sounds like "working as intended". 

The more players your teams can keep, the less valuable the picks are.

Yea I guess. Some owners just seemed concerned that teams are getting stacked when getting players for picks. We had a trade of Ingram and a later round pick for  Kenneth Dixon and a mid round pick. Another trade was Melvin Gordon and a 14th for Forte and an 8th. We have 18 rounds. Seems like he gave Gordon away just for the pick instead of holding ground and getting something inside the top 5

I'm sorry I forgot to add that we have 18 rounds in our draft and only players selected from rounds 7-18 can be kept for as long as you want just have to give up that round pick in the draft

Once we added trading draft picks it lead to many more in-season trades and a much more exciting and involved league.  Teams that start slow may determine it is a "rebuilding" year and start trading players for picks.  The first season teams traded away many of their picks to make a push for a title.  The following years since then we have seen that there are far fewer trades involving top draft picks due to how hard it is to be competitive when you are missing your top picks.   (Our league is a re-draft with 3 keepers per team.  You may keep 1 player who has been kept (franchise tag) and 2 players who were not kept the previous season).

My answer to your question is just wait... everything will balance out.  Teams that acquire picks now will start very strong next year... but with injuries, coaches decisions, poor play anything can happen.

In general, limiting trading of picks is a bad idea, other than keeping it to one year out (my main league does 2, bull but either works) and in pay leagues making the team trading the picks to pay for that year. 

In a keeper like yours, you could limit the number of picks you acquire to equal the number of players you can keep, but your league already limits the teams way too much imo. You're dictating the roster breakdown so severely that teams can't trade a rb for a wr, or any other shift.  

In leagues with active, competent owners, usually the free market wins out - sure, bad deals will happen, but over time owners learn to shop their players or picks and the nice thing about a keeper league is your top teams aren't going to remain as stacked year after year.  

The trade you mention, Forte / gordon, seems fair.  

Frankly, if I'm 1-7, without much hope this year, I'm dumping players other than my keepers, for picks.  If I'm contending I'm trading picks for older starters.  That's a good thing for both teams and keeps the league active.

No reason to slow it down. I would make sure you're having teams that trade their picks pay for that following year in advance. Particularly their 1st and 2nd rounders.

This is our 15th year of our 12-team, keep 6 players, fantasy league. 18 roster spots, 12 round draft.

Initially we restricted keepers to no more than 3 players per position...but no other keeper restrictions. Could be kept from any round. Could be kept for an unlimited time. Initially traded picks could only be no more than two years out.

Now? No keeper restrictions. Keep 6 WR's? Sure, whatever makes you happy. Trade picks? Sure, no restrictions. Trade a pick 3, or 4, or 5 years out? Sure, whatever makes you happy.

We've only had two or three trades, ever, that moved a pick from 3 years out. Removing restrictions from keepers and traded picks was a great move for our league. It's helped poor teams get better quickly and has helped good teams too.

Oh, one other thing. Trade deadline. We used to have a week 12 dealine. Then we moved it to week 14, our last regular season week. Then, a few years ago (6 or 7,) we moved it to week 17, our championship week. Literally one of the best things we've ever done.

We also don't make anyone pay in advance for future pick trades. We've been together long enough it's not a concern. That's not to say it's not a good rule to have in place, we just don't have a need to have that rule.

We've never had a repeat champion. Ever. Never a back-to-back champ. Sure, some teams have two titles and one team has 3 (me.) At least 4 teams have been to title games back-to-back. At least 4 times I've traded away my first 5 picks in a single year and it hasn't hindered me from being competetive those years. 

Final thoughts: removing trade and keeper restrictions has made for a very active and competetive league. Every year anyone could win the title. I'm not saying that what works for us will work for your league. I'm just saying it can work.
