Falcons quarterback Byron Leftwich could be back this season but there is no certainty as to when.

If Leftwich's injury is a high ankle sprain, he could be out for at least two weeks if not longer because of the potential trickiness of the injury.

The good news for Leftwich is that the injury did not affect his problematic left ankle, which he had surgically repaired while playing at Jacksonville.

And a blurb on T Renardo Foster:

Whereas the news regarding Leftwich had a window for optimism, the outlook for left tackle Renardo Foster is not as good... Petrino did not discuss the specifics of the left knee injury Foster incurred late in the game, but he did mention the possibility of adding a lineman to the roster to fortify the injury- depleted position... The Falcons recently signed Harvey Dahl from San Francisco's practice squad to bolster depth on the offensive line. Atlanta could offset another loss with the return of right tackle Todd Weiner.

---------

I doubt Foster is back, looked like his knee got hurt pretty bad, as it gets even worse for the ATL O-Line. Any SF homers or anyone else know anything about Dahl?

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Byron Leftwich underwent surgery on his severely-sprained right ankle on Tuesday, in a procedure that may enable him to return to the field within two weeks, according to team sources.

Leftwich was to have the ankle secured by at least two screws. It is a procedure that has had a high rate of success of return for athletes, a team source said.

Falcons team doctor Scott Gillogly was scheduled to do the surgery. He convinced Leftwich that similar operations he has performed on Atlanta Thrashers hockey players had hastened their recovery within a two-week time frame, a source said.

I understand that that is just a blurb with limited information, but if I was Leftwich I would have certainly got at least a second opinion. Dr. James Andrews would have gotten a face to face with me before I let the team doctor put screws in my ankle when the other ankle has been a nightmare already. Hopefully Byron did get other opinions and it just wasn't mentioned.

Looks like my prediction about who would benefit most from Leftwich starting was correct - Joey Harrington!

He did consult with Andrews for a second opinion, I don't think it was face-to-face tho. It's in the linked full article.

Thanks, the first time I hit the link I got an error. It works now for me.

Quarterback Byron Leftwich, who had surgery on his right ankle last week, was walking without the aid of crutches on Monday.

"I'm feeling good about everything," Leftwich said. "I think I'm ahead of schedule. As you can see I'm walking around. I'm happy about that."

Leftwich was injured in the third quarter against New Orleans when he was sacked by Will Smith. He was making his first start for the Falcons. The team initially thought he'd be out 2-4 weeks.

"There is some pain involved, but not as much as he thought there might be," Petrino said. "It's probably a couple of weeks away still in my opinion. In his, maybe one week away."

Byron Leftwich (ankle surgery) is not expected to play in Week 10.

It would be a positive sign for Leftwich's recovery if he's able to do some limited practice work this week. Joey Harrington will start against the Panthers. Leftwich is expected to get his starting job back when he's healthy.

Related: Joey Harrington

As bad as Harrington has been this year, Leftwich has been decidedly worse.
Not true at allLeftwich played bad in week 5 but he was new to the team and obviously unprepared and they just threw him in at the end of the game. His only real game that he played was week 7 where he had a chance to prepare as the starter. He only played 1 half and was 15/23 for 145 yrds and 1 TD/0 ints in that half. Leftwhich is actually a good QB, both real life and fantasy when he is not hurt. He is highly injury prone though. But he is an upgrade over Harrington.

:hangover: In no way has Harrington been "decidedly" better than anyone not named Carr.

Not only that but having watched the game, I would say he played even better than the stats would suggest. Granted, it was the Saints but he really had Atlanta's offense moving the ball with confidence. If that guy could ever stay healthy he could be a real force.
