I just read this on ESPNS chat with Mike Reiss.

Shane Vereen's 31 reps is a Combine record for running backs. (Mikel Leshoure 21 reps) I have no idea why 5-10 215lbs keeps getting compared to 5-7 185lb Danny Woodhead. they are nothing alike except they both play RB. Thanks.

so is he a bigger Woodhead?

sorry, couldn't resist.

I actually like Vereen in their offense and think he will get the most touches (not a majority, though)

If BJGE comes back, he could be the short yardage and goal line back.

Woodhead did well in limited touches last year (though PPR he was startable, which I had to do)

YEs he is bigger then Woodhead. He is 5'10 and 215 lb. So thats pretty good size for an RB. Good enough to run between the tackles more so then little 185lb Woodhead.

I see posts all the time where they say oh Vereen is like Faulk, and Vereen is just a similar skillset player to Woodhead. This is just not true. And I wanted to clarify that to everyone. Mostly I think its cool that he had 31 reps on the bench press for an RB is pretty sweet. (If you can't tell I'm hoping he falls to me at my rookie pick of no 10)

sounds to me like you are hoping he goes ahead of you by hy[ping him on the board

don't know if this is a math question or a semantics question, so let me clarify what I meant:

i think Vereen will get the most touches of any NE RB, BUT he will not have greater than 50% of the total touches of all NE RBs.

in my world, "most touches" does not equal the "majority"

and

"majority" means greater than 50% of all touches

YMMV

Using last year #'s for NE RBs:

BJGE had 51.8% of the touches (229 carries plus 12 catches)

Woodhead had 28.1% (97 and 34)

Taylor/Morris/Faulk/Clayton had the rest, exactly 20%.

If BJGE, Taylor, Morris and Faulk are all gone, I would think that NE would bring in a FA or 2 to go with Woodhead and the two rookies.

As of right now, I think Vereen is the most talented back on the roster and would have been last year, too.

However, NE likes to use multiple packages and somehow got Woodhead almost 9 touches a game (while BJGE averaged 15).

So if I were to project 2011 NE RB usage, you divvy up the 31 touches a game, I don't see Vereen getting 16 touches a game as a rookie. Hope I'm wrong, but i expect a FA to come in, even if they keep BJGE.

Sorry for the thread drift.

Woodhead and Vereen both play RB for the same team and can catch the football... other than that, I see no similarities.

why would they get rid of BGE? He's got a cheap price tag, plays special teams, fullback, and anything else they ask him to do...not sure why people keep saying that

It's pretty much not an "if". He's a three year restricted FA so even under a new CBA he's be back unless some one wants to pay him big and forfeit a second round pick to NE.

Also, the law firm never fumbles. This is yet to be seen from the rookies until they hit the field. I was thinking of grabbing BGGE & Vareen real late and hope for the best. Protect Tom Brady, protect Tom Brady, ........

Maybe the reason Vareen and Woodhead are getting compared is because they are both well rounded runningbacks that do everything pretty well but excel at no facet of the game.

could be though we dont really know what aspects of the game vereen will do pretty well at and which, if any, he'll excel at. i think most of it is just knee-jerk, reach for the closest comparison. i heard the woodhead comparisons a minute after the pick was made by draft pundits, fantasy junkies and regular fans. to me that speaks mostly of not knowing a ton about vereen and trying to plug him into a role rather than being aware of his game, physical size and abilities. it pretty much became the conventional wisdom right away, right or wrong.

The only film I've seen of Vereen is here: http://www.patsfans.com/blogs/derek/2011/05/05/shane-vereen-highlight-video/

From watching the highlights, I would agree that he doesn't have excellent speed, but he does have a nice burst when he hits the hole. Cal's o-line created some huge holes for him to run through. Vereen also shows great patience, allowing his blocks to set up in front of him, helping his like to create some of the holes. He shows nice ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, so it will be interesting how/if he takes opportunities away from Woodhead there.

I do like Vereen's ability from what I saw of him here and think he found a nice place to land behind NE's o-line and with Brady reading defenses.

 huh?
What is hard to understand here.He thinks Vereen will get the most touches by not more than 50% of them.
50% is only a majority if there's 2. He can't get the most touches and not have the majority... those words mean the same thing.
Can we say he'll get a majority of the carries, most of the time?? I'd settle for that! Does that make you two punks happy?
