Let's Talk Rookie TE Value (1 Viewer)

Okay, assume Vernon Davis is long out of the picture :bag: Lets not talk about him.

What is Rookie TE Value in this years rookie draft for mid to late second round picks? Who has the most value to be a solid back-up with a good shot at becoming a decent starter. For those of us who have a Heap, Gonzalez, Witten, etc. Who is the best value to draft as your backup?

Marcedes Lewis - doesn't really fit the topic, as he most likely will be gone 2nd early 2nd to someone who is looking for a starter. A steal and tremendous value mid-late 2nd

Joe Klopenstein - In Linhans Offense  , also drafted Byrd  . Does he have long term FF value for a mid to late 2nd?

Tony Scheffer - Can he block well enough to get on the field? Will Shanny target him enough to be a solid backup and possible breakout guy?

Leonard Pope - I don't see him as much more than a blocker or possible Red Zone target. Early third is best value IMO

Dominique Byrd - 2nd TE drafted. Lots of questions

Anthony Fasono - Behind Witten, but two TE sets on the way? Some say he is better than the 2nd round type guys, but in a wierd FF situation.

Thoughts? :boxing:

My thoughts? Trade up a few slots and get Lewis. He's still a bargain at his current price.

I'd say Lewis. I don't really like any of the TE's other than Davis myself, but I'd take him over the rest.

I think Troupe & Watson are still undervalued in the fantasy football community & I'd go after them before taking a non-Vernon TE.

While my stratagy may not suit others, I drafted Klopenstein 2nd(26th) and followed him up w/Byrd(42) in the 3rd. Davis, Lewis and Pope had already been drafted. My need for a backup-and future(have LJ Smith)-TE somewhat forced me to draft in this route. I'm just not sure who will take the starters spot in SL. By taking both, hopefully one of them actually will become a force in a few years. The Rams will be starting one of these guys unless they make a FA move prior to training camp. Strickly a futures move on my part. My hope is that one of them will emerge THIS year. My other roster spots are in good shape, so this was a draft for need, rather than best player available.

The Jags were running a lot of 2 TE sets during the recent mini-camp. There's talk that they could use that formation on a good percentage of snaps. Also most of the so called local experts are saying that Lewis will be the starting TE from day one and that Brady will only be on the field in the 2 TE and short yardage packages.

Good info, thanks. I also read he made an incredible catch that turned a lot of heads. Jax offense gives me a headache, but Marcedes is in tier by himself behind Davis... unless you want to put those two in the same tier.

I've got a nice sleeper for you, if you decide to wait on a TE in a dynasty league.... Dave Thomas, NE. Graham is on the last year of his contract. Thomas was a 4th rounder by Belichick, and reportedly had a pretty good mini-camp. Graham is expected to be gone after this year, and while the Pats tend to use several TE's in the course of the season, behind Watson, Thomas is a nice 6th round pick in IDP dynasty's.

As a fan I feel pretty good about the Jags offense. But in terms of fantasy football it's a nightmare. The RBs are a total quagmire behind Taylor who obviously has his own question marks. Leftwich tended to spread the ball around when Jimmy Smith was playing, with Smith gone and Lewis added throw darts at a roster to guess who's going to get the most targets. Wilford would seem to be the best bet but I think Lewis will steal more production from Wilford than anyone else. Plus I expect the Jags to add a WR or two for depth and competition in camp if they don't trade for Lelie, Stallworth, Porter, etc. And yes, Lewis made several catches in camp that brought oooo and ahhhs from the crowd and even some of the vet players. The only WR that looked better in mini-camp was Chad Owens, but that's another story.

A major headache, but I think you have it dialed in as reasonably as can be expected.

Tim Day is my rookie TE sleeper.

At last weekend's rookie minicamp, Day impressed coaches with his speed, hands and route-running ability, especially on vertical pass plays designed to stretch the defense.

"We thought Tim would get drafted, but he didn't," said coach Lovie Smith. "He should have a heck of a shot of making our ballclub here, so it could end up being good for both of us."
Chicago is an excellent spot for him.

Some good insights guys. Now, what about Klopenstein, Pope, Scheffer? Which if any of these guys will develop into a solid backup TE in a good situation?

Or, any other sleepers besides Day and Wendy's dad?
