Lions 2008 RB (1 Viewer)

PRAE

On the roster right now they have:

Aveion Cason

Brian Caloun

Tatum Bell

Is one of these guys our starting RB this year??

Interested in opinions out there... Will they pick up a FA?? I honestly thought they would take Mendanhall and that he would have a good shot at starting right away. Its tough being a Lions fan!

Rumor has Det. offering a #3 to Oakland for M. Bush.

I could also see Der. taking T. Choice with their round pick

I guess thats better than nothing...I realize they needed OL....but we really need to get a RB in here that we can develop... By the time we do that our "new" o-line will probably be out the door!!!

They'll probably either draft one in the 3rd or sign a guy like SA or Lamont Jordan (when he's cut) as a stopgap.

We'll know more in an hour or two.

I'd be surprised (well maybe not with MM in charge) if they didn't snag a RB @ 3.03 today. MIA may grab someone now that they traded away Booker, but I doubt STL will take anyone. Options: J Charles (TBell 2) or Kevin Smith

Edit to add: They could always re-sign KJ!

Living in Orlando, Kevin Smith was the entire UCF offense last year. Solidback, durable, does everything well, coachable kid...has a shot to beat out Bell for sure. He is definately now a top 5 dynasty pick IMO. Great situation for Smith to land in. I've been a Smith fan for a couple years now, and think he will thrive in Detroit.

Who is the offensive coach in Detroit now? Bell and Calhoun might be serviceable in the right system. Otherwise we should see them bring in somebody else or even resign Jones. Considering the teams that drafted RBs high, we should see a couple more vets hitting the market.

Jim Colletto became the Lions new offensive line coach January 29, 2007. He has 40 years of combined experience coaching in college and the NFL, and he spent last season as the offensive line coach for UCLA. The Bruins’ offensive line allowed only 21 sacks and cleared the way for a rushing attack that averaged 129.8 yards-per-game.

I'm surprised you can type with one hand... Considering the dislocated shoulder you have from patting yourself on the back nailing one out of three on your predictions

:sarcasm: Seriously, though... I don't quite consider myself a Great White in the likes of Bloom, Lammey, EBF, etc.. more of a sand-shark. So to even be close - was nice.

When is the last time a team's starter was drafted in the 3rd round that same year?
Good question, but I don't think that every situation is the same.If you think about it, with Kevin Jones gone, you have Tatum Bell as the de facto starter and the smallish, oft-injured Calhoun as the other competitor. This is the same Bell who didn't live up to expectations in the Broncos' system and who was seemingly in the doghouse for the bulk of the year last seasion. Anyone who doesn't think that Kevin Smith doesn't have a golden opportunity here is kidding themselves.

Would not surprise me a bit if he has the best numbers out of all the rookies just based on opp.

This was a good question, so I had to look it up.2007 - no RB drafted after round 2 led their team; best was Kolby Smith (112/407/2) who was drafted in round 5

2006 - Leon Washington (151/650/4) led the Jets as a 4th round pick

2005 - Frank Gore (127/608/3) led the 49ers as a 3rd round pick

2004 - no RB drafted after round 2 led their team; best was Mewelde Moore (65/379/0) who was drafted in round 4

2003 - Domanick Williams (238/1031/8) led the Texans as a 4th round pick

2002 - Johnathan Wells (197/529/3) led the Texans as a 4th round pick

2001 - James Jackson (195/554/2) led the Browns as a 3rd round pick; Correll Buckhalter (129/586/2) had a better year, but was 18 yards behind Duce Staley as a 4th round pick

2000 - Mike Anderson (297/1487/15) led the Broncos as a 6th round pick; Travis Prentice (173/512/7) led the Browns as a 3rd round pick

Sure, they might not all have been the starter at the beginning of the year, but that's more later round RB's leading their teams than I expected to see. Did you notice that the Texans were led in consecutive years by a 4th round rookie? Or that the Browns did the same with 3rd rounders in 2000-2001? I got bored looking back any further.

Smith was underrated before the draft. Goes to a team with an open competition and is still underrated. He has as good a chance as any not in the big 3 and maybe even better than 1-2 of that talented trio.

I have pick 5 and am wishing he didnt look like pick 4.

Nice bit of research. A couple of thoughts...

Notice that except for Gore and Domanick Davis Williams, none of the above guys had any real lasting starter value? Pretty much a nobody after that year, or maybe the next. I'd be pretty uncomfortable ranking Kevin Smith too highly based on circumstance.

And my other point -- probably the larger point -- I've usually drafted more based on organizational drafting ability and stability rather than what player appears to have the best direct path to starting, and it's worked out pretty well. You have a pretty good idea the Paolis and Polians and Thompsons of the world will put their draftees in a good position to succeed in the long run, while the Millens will continue to stumble and bumble along endlessly.

Smith may look like a value, but if this team is always a failure, Smith will end up a failure too in the long run. I wouldn't want to invest long term hopes in a DET RB, given their consistent long term OL and DEF problems. Millen builds a loser, and the RB ends up swallowed up by it. Kevin Jones was a lot more talented than Smith and he never had more than sporadic success. Buyer beware.

Both expansion teams.

 Hard to argue with that.

remember folks, this is a Dynasty draft - people are myopic and not looking at the big picture . . .

Parker could be gone in a year or two, and Mendenhall could be a star . . .

Stewart is already looking to get a majority of carries over the mistake pick of D-Shrimpy . . . (where are all the people that assumed D-Will could handle a full load??) . . .

Smith would be a reach at any spot above 1.4 . . .

Nothing I've seen would bump him up into the top 3, but 4-7 was a pretty open competition going into the draft, and I like Kevin Smith's opportunity and skill set to fit into the 4 or 5 slot rookie draft.

I still can't believe the Lions passed on Ray Rice to take a LB (Dizon) they could have gotten in round 4. Matt Millen never ceases to amaze. Rice (and a couple solid OL) would have been a great fit in DET.

Tatum Bell showed up to Lions minicamps overweight.

"He might be up there a little bit more," coach Rod Marinelli said. "I told these guys – just make sure we’re aware of where we’re at. Right now, it’s still the off-season. But I want to make sure we’re working toward the perfect weight. I’m aware of every guy. They’re made aware of where I want them."
