besides matt.m and the front office crew. these are the kind of players that have helped keep detroit in the basement.

It was way too physical. He made us run and stretch and tackle and stuff.  We should only have to do that stuff if there's an incentive in the contract for it.  Our contracts say we get incentives to attend mini camp, not actually do anything. We had to sit in a boring classroon with that nutcase Martz ranting about knowing the plays.  Dude, our talent is enough to get us by.  We don't need to know his goofy plays that well.  And because of all the classroon time, we barely had any time to play our Madden games or for our hoes.He hurt our feelings when Coach Marinelli said it didn't matter what round we were drafted in, we have to 'earn' our spots on the roster.  EARN??!!  Who does this guy think he is?  That's mental abuse.  We're elite talents.  Our agents say so.  Who does this new coach think he is???Oh, and that teacher's pet Scottie Vines kept snickering at us.  Punk. Therefore, we hereby file this grievance.Signed, Mike "Fat" WilliamsCharles "Lazy" RogersKevin "Stupid" Jones

Of course what they were doing in the past really worked out for them.

This sounds very similar to when Coughlin took over NYG. He played hardball, the players were apprehensive and made official complaints. All I have to say is, they are going to have to go to camp at some point and when they do...life could surely be hell. Most don't know what to do with 2 a day's now...maybe they will find out soon enough.

Maybe that is why Martz stormed out the other day...just found out.

..and while the players were different several years ago, this underscores one of the reasons why Bobby Ross quit on the Lions.

:pathetic:

Note: James Hall, Cory Schlesinger and Terrence Holt are the union reps, and thus reported the Lions to the league office (it is their job).

ALLEN PARK -- Mike Fowler has learned that the Detroit Lions penalty (losing two OTA session -- essentially a two-day paid vacation for the veterans) -- was because Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz called the players back onto the field during the team's mini-camp two weekends ago after he was unhappy with a session. Once players are in the locker room, they cannot be subject to another practice, thus violating the CBA.

As for Martz leaving during the draft: Contrary to reports, Martz had permission from the Lions to leave during the draft weekend because he is in the process of purchasing a home. Martz did leave the facility unhappy, but it was because he had just been informed of the "slap on the wrist" that was handed down by the league.

Grievance will cost Marinelli OTA sessions

Lions player file grievance against excessive hitting

by Mike Fowler

ALLEN PARK - The NFL Players association today announced that the Detroit Lions will lose two days of OTA workouts due to a violation of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement's rule on off-season workouts.

According to release received from the Players Association the Lions and the NFL's Management Council agreed to the penalties as a result of excessive hitting during last week's closed minicamp session.

The release reads in part: "As a result, the Lions will forfeit two days of their off-season program (Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9). Lions’ players are not permitted to be at the facility on those two days, but will be paid for the sessions. The Club’s off-season workouts will resume on Thursday, May 11."

A press release issued by the NFLPA outlines the league's offseason workout rules and clearly states that "contact work is prohibited in all workouts and cites "'live'" blocking, tackling, pass rushing, bump-and-run" activity off limits. The release further states that the "tempo of drills should be at a level conducive to learning, with player safety as the highest priority."

Detroit is currently holding a three-day rookie and first year veteran minicamp at their Allen Park Headquarters which will wrap up on Sunday afternoon.

Sounds to me like exactly what Coughlin did....and it was probably deliberate. Pretty easy way to weed out the the guys who can't cut it. I wouldn't read too much into it at this point....but of course it will provide plenty of fodder for people who want to bash the Lions.....says more about what a ####ty coach Mooch was than anything imho.

All part of Marinelli's master plan ;)

everyone should keep in mind that "Killer" Kowalski was the one who "broke" the story....which means with 100% certainty that it is way overblown and full of hyperbolic insinuations.

Players complaining about Marinelli being too tough was the one thing i would have bet my house on this off season.

You can say it may be "overblown" but there was a grievance filed. There was also days taken away from the off-season program, so there was a violation

So? sounds to me like a good violation and exactly what this team needs. players #####ed a lot about coughlin too....they'll come around - or they'll be gone

They probably had more physical contact in that one practice than in Mooch's entire training camp.

Grievance for PRACTICING TOO MUCH.

--Never heard that out of Detroit before!

Funny you mention that. A new HP III board posting:Brokeback Mountain Men -/U Date Fri May 5 1:23:39 p.m. PT 2006

FYI - I have a hot date tonight (with the chick from So Seductive's photo) & will not have Internet Access until late tomorrow afternoon. I'll give Bullfrogs a call tonight and see if I'm on the clock....if I am....I will give him my password and have him make the pick for me.....so I don't hold the draft up for 1/2 day.

Fighting Couch Potatoes HP -/U Date Fri May 5 1:40:04 p.m. PT 2006 Edited Fri May 5 1:42:52 p.m. PT 2006

Ah, I can see tonight in my mind... you are in the bedroom after the evening out, romance is in the air...

Her - "Honey, I want it bad. Oh so bad. I'm ready for you baby. I want you now...."

You - "Uh, sure. But first I gotta call my football pal and get out my list and talk about fantasy football stuff and see who has been drafted and then make my pick. It should only take an hour or so."

Her - "Weirdo!"

In less than a minute she has all her things and is out the door, never to be seen again.

But it's worth it, 'cause you now have that 6th WR. :nerd:

Tom "Killer" Kowalski is such a tool. Does anybody in the Lions organization actually take this guy seriously? He is the Matt Millen of reporting. He actually looks a little like Matt Millen too.

Ex-Marine Mike Anderson should have gone to Detroit instead of Baltimore. He would have been a good example for these 'it's too physical' #######.

EDIT: Language filter got me. Let's just say kitty cats. :D

I think some of the Lions players have their periods.

According to my wife, sometimes it isn't very comfortable running when you are bloated. Forget about actually bumping into anyone else. My goodness, what is this coach thinking?

cough, cough <pvssies> cough

I love his training camp chat transcripts. They always go something like this..FAN: Tom, how did Joey and Charles Rogers look?

KILLER: Joey looked sharp. He's really got a command of the huddle this year. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Rogers is going to be a real weapon. He's catching everything, not avoiding contact and his speed is unbelievable.

Exactly. And then a couple months later he'll flip flop on his commentary and slam the same players for being total busts and claim to have some inside information on how both were washouts at camp. The thing I hate about Killer is that he comes across as an arrogant know-it-all Lions expert, but the reality is that his commentary contains very little actual substance.

First off, any player can file a grievance, not just the union reps. Second, It's their job???? All of the teams step over the line. Not all of the teams are punished for it. THis is just player posturing with a new coaching staff. Same stuff happened in NYG with Coughlin and Arizona with Denny. BUT if you want to win, you suck up some of this stuff and try to get better.

The offense stunk, and Martz called them on it. Gee what a shock. And the Lions lose practice time. What a bunch of whiners. GEt rid of the dead weight and get players in who actually want to win. It is after all, their JOB.

What a bunch of portable dishwashers! This is why the Lions are what they are. Get ready for some changes in DET this year. Martz ain't gonna go for this kind of nonsense.

I believe there's a rule against any form of retaliation by Marinelli. I hope this doesn't mean these two are guaranteed a roster spot or they'll claim he retalliated....some BS like that. That would stink

Quick question for everyone who is railing on the Lions' players: is there anything Marinelli could do for which you would think a grievance would be justified?

Denny Green cut Pete Kendall for being the rat in this same scenario 2 years ago (allegedly).

Strahan, of all players, was loudest about crticizing Coughlin and Tiki Barber stood up for the coach, basically telling Strahan to shut up and do what you get paid to do. Team went from 5-11 to 11-5.

I like the guy already.

I agree with some of what has been said here. Last year (from what I hear) the Lions didn't practice in pads past september. That has to change if the Lions want to be competitive let alone win. These guys need this kind of treatment to turn them into the kind of football team that the city of Detroit has been waiting for, for years. Coach Marinelli, is the right guy for the job and I am excited about this upcomming season. I agree that come July and those nasty two a days, this coaching staff will whip these guys into shape and put them in there proper place on or off the team. :football:

The difference being Coughlin and Grimace won 10+ games as head coaches in Jacksonville and Minnesota.

This thing will backfire on Detroit unless he actually cuts some 'big money' guys to make a point, ie. Charles Rogers.... Joey Harrington.... and a defensive player too...

I have to think that anyone can report these, and someone else did. I highly doubt Schlesinger would ever complain about practice being too physical, and Hall and Holt don't seem like the type either. Those guys are rare Lions overachievers.Plenty of other players on the team who I could see pitching a fit though.

So, they basically have May 8th and 9th off?........gutless, punks

What would be interesting is IF a small select few players actually showed up (on their own, of course) to work out, etc..........

Here's a question: Under the terms of the CBA, could the Lions still have a "voluntary" practice? (or afternoon tea session)

a few more practices like the one they got their asses yanked back on the field and maybe we see them play in January in the not too distant future!
