live Grateful Dead (2 Viewers)

Went to my first Dead show in 5-11-79, Billerica MA. Saw shows almost continuously until Jerry died in 95. It would be embarrassing to admit to the number of shows I've seen.

New Year's Eve '82, Oakland. With Etta James and the Tower of Power Horns.
New Year's Eve '82, Oakland. With Etta James and the Tower of Power Horns.
I was at that one right up front.....wild ending to the night - Etta had a drink of the wrong stuff and she was out there.

Dinosaurs opened as well with John Cipollina making snakes and #### appear out of the air from his guitar - just like the old QMS days. Robert Hunter as well.

My lasting memory of Bill Graham - I was up front and he was partying a lot that night. Dancing and having a good time.

Weir just cancelled all shows he was booked for into next year, including a pretty significant gig the Lockn Festival. Hope he's alright.

Brent Mydland didn't die until after the summer '90 tour. Hornsby didn't play with them for the Warlocks run.
90% certain he did - he is from Williamsburg, and may have just played on those two dates, not the whole tour.
He played Hampton with the Garcia Band in November of '91, and then the GD went back in '92 and he played with them. He definitely did not play with them in '89.

ETA: Yes, memory of specific events often blank.

I'll take your word for it - though Hornsby often showed up and played as a guest at Coliseum concerts for a lot of artists.

I was fortunate to hang out with Hornsby for a night at a bar up in Williamsburg - very smart guy. It was a fun experience.

I'm more acquainted with those Warlocks shows than a person has any reason to be. I promise he didn't play. But I was there for the JGB show and the following GD run and can confirm he played all three.

I've talked to him a few times. Always cool. He likes to talk hoops.

thats a good show, a little progressive with the synthesizers and such. A totally different dead sound than one from 15 years prior. Still good though

HFS... I never even knew that website existed! This provided my whole night's entertainment... maybe more... Great link, great link...

fwiw, I'm a Dead fan... not a Dead Head per se...
I found it thru this site. A nice companion site for set lists & reviews with links to the archives.

See ya in a couple weeks :bye:

Of course, my memory is a bit fuzzy from that era...
I saw the Warlocks in Hampton in '89, and Bruce wasn't there. The reason the Dead played under their old Warlock name is because the city/town of Hampton did not want the Dead back in town. They were tired of the mess and chaos the Deadheads brought with them a couple times prior. It was mainly the new generation of Dead fans (In The Dark generation) that were the problem. They were a problem in other places too. Anyway, I think some locals had to be suspicious when a few sketchy looking folks were walking down the street around the coliseum area holding up signs that said "I Need A Miracle."

Bruce Hornsby did play with the Dead some while Brent Mydland was still with them. He opened for them, and would join them on stage.

One of my friends from high school lived with Bruce Hornsby's parents when he played basketball for William and Mary. They hosted a basketball player, and he happened to be the player. I never met them or Bruce, but my friend said they were very nice.

They're announcing the 50th reunion show in a few minutes. 3 night run in Chicago over the 4th of July weekend is what I've heard. Trey joining the core 4.

Multiple venues with rotating guitar chair has been the rumor for a few weeks. All the usual suspects, including, most importantly, Steve Kimock.

Phil will be 75 and has been playing regularly at his restaurant in Marin and occasional week-long runs at the Capital Theatre in Westchester County.

I guess it would be cool to see with trey but I doubt anything can top the first Phil and Friends. I still listen to those shows at least bi-monthly. That was better than anything the Dead did from the last 20 years.

I just cannot imagine a bunch of 70 year old dudes really jammming.

The last 20 years as in 1995 to 2015 or the last twenty years of the Grateful Dead? If you mean between 1995 and 2015, for me it's close between 8/98, 99 Planet Drum w/Kimock, the 98 Other Ones tour, and the 99 Warfield runs. Pretty much anything with Kimock achieved liftoff from time to time.

And if you don't think 70 year olds can jam, I highly recommend getting yourself to a Keith Jarrett Trio show.

I mean from the original Trey/page/kimock shows from teh Warfield back.

Those were better than just about any of the dead shows from their last 15-20 years.

The Dead, imo, peaked around 77-78ish

Wow. I was at the Trey/Kimock shows and they weren't anywhere close to the greatness most of the GD shows I saw. I couldn't disagree more, but that's an interesting take.

ETA: I'd put 1978 toward the bottom on my nerd easel.

I was at Jerrys last dead show 20 years ago

I'll have to see if I can talk the wife into letting me go this time around.
