Live Mock Draft (2 Round) (1 Viewer)

The Cincinnati Bengals select...

Leonard Pope - TE - Georgia

Huge Target... I was in the 'Bengals won't get a TE in the first round' camp... but they lost Walters to Houston, Schobel to Philly and Henry is a dumb ###. Palmer will love having this security blanket.

Interesting pick next for Cincy.
It was a hard one.. I think there is big difference between Cromartie and the next CB. The Bengals could go a million different ways here. Greenway since Simmons' contract is almost up, a corner, Allen, Hali or Kiwanuka, Pope. Hard to predict this one.

The Giants select...

DeMeco Ryans, LB, Alabama

A run-stuffing DT like Gabe Watson is a very real possibility here with the loss of Kendrick Clancy to free agency, but the Giants' pursuit of LaVar Arrington is indicative of their desire to upgrade the LB spot, which was the weak point of the team last year. Ryans is one of the few OLBs carrying a first round grade that is better suited to the 4-3 than the 3-4. Ryans didn't test off the charts, but he plays fast and he's smart. Bottom line - he's a sideline to sideline playmaker, and is just what the doctor ordered for the Giants' defense.

Edit to add : I read today that Arrington is looking for 7 years at $54 million, which is ludicrous. The Giants are going to tune out and address the position via the LB-rich draft.

So does Carolina shore up the OLine? DT? Take a Safety and move Davis to OLB? Add another RB?Lendale is a possibility here but I think they would be better served taking a DB like Simpson or Bing (If they are thinking Strong Safety), Youboty (for a pure cover guy), or for all-around versatility Jason Allen.

1.27 Carolina

Could use a TE, but with Keyshawn added to Smith, there wouldn't be enough balls for a pass catching first rounder. Needed a DT, but Maake Kemoeatu was a nice pick up. The loss of Witherspoon looms large here. They may plug in Thomas Davis, but he should stay at safety and dominate.

Chad Greenway has found his bottom right here. He may or may not last this long, but I like him for Carolina should he fall.

1.28 Jacksonville

Could use a TE, but so much has been invested in receivers lately, that I think other problems need addressing. Personally, I thought the run blocking was a huge disappointment last season. A real road grader like Jean-Gilles or Spencer would make sense. They can probably address that later if one of the Trojans fall. Winborn was probably brought in last season to replace Ayodele who never seemed to get it. Kenny Wright and Terry Cousins played corner opposite Mathis, and neither were very good, though they had their moments. Wright's gone via free agency, so they need to take advantage of the DBs in this draft. The top corners will go first so

Richard Marshall now and a safety next, seems like the best move for the Jags. Btw, if this seems early for Marshall, he's a really skyrocketing and rightly so. Not a more complete pure corner in the draft.

Since it was his idea to do this, I'm not going to make Evilgrin's pick. We'll stop here and start tomorrow at 10AM ET
I sent 5rings a PM about taking my spot to draft tomorrow. I'll be in training and don't knwo when i'll be able to get to the net. So if he makes the pick, i've asked him too. If thats alright with everyone.

Per Andy

Post this please.

1.17 - Jay Cutler

And the Viking faithful go BONKERS!

I tried to trade up to Cleveland, offering the Vikings 1st and both 3rds, but got no reply. Obviously, I'm glad it didn't happen now. Now the Vikes cross their fingers and hope he's the QB for their future. This couldn't have worked out any better for the Vikings.
 All you need now Andy is to walk off the podium and make a 'drop kick' gesture.

Glad I popped in.

The New York Jets select Nick Mangold, C, Ohio St.

This would have to be a dream scenario for the Jets. Their primary offseason losses were Kevin Mawae and John Abraham - they get a younger version of Abe with Mario Williams, and they get a rare center prospect to rplace Mawae in Mangold. Strongly considered Marcus McNeill here, but there are several quality tackles still available, and at least one of the top 5 will be around when the Jets choose again, but Mangold may not be.

Hitting the sack soon, I'll check in one more time in about 15 minutes in case picks 30 & 31 are made quickly, otherwise I will be in to choose for my beloved Steelers tomorrow about 9 AM.

I (Seahawks #31) am on line and I have also predrafted my picks and PMed them, so I am only waiting on Indy.

milfoshane has the Colts, and he is lurking....

Seriously, though, 10 more minutes and I have to sack out. My pick really hinges on who is selected by Indy, so I have to wait on that. I don't think the Seattle pick will affect me.

Agreed. This would be a great first round for the Jets. Nice drafting.

hello fellas since I see some of us are here

I'll post mine now

1.29 Colts -Thomas Howard (OLB, UTEP)

Exactly the kind of speed guy they love on D

Everyone thinks this is Maroney. The two biggest weaknesses to his game are receiving and pass protection. The two biggest needs in a RB for Indy are receiving and pass protection.

They will most likely trade down and look towards Addai in the second, but as there are no trade partners now

I'll go with Howard.

I changed my pick from my predraft

Kansas City has several options here. I think their best bet is to hope that Tye Hill or Jimmy Williams fall here - other DB options are more questionable. Also would look at Winston here if he falls.

Biggest other need that is best addressed now would be WR, and with Chad Jackson off the board, the Chiefs will select:

1.20 Santonio Holmes WR Ohio State

With his speed and jumping ability, Holmes will give them the playmaker #1 WR they desperately need. Plus he can run-block (always a prime skill in KC) and fill in for Dante Hall if needed. Oh and they already have the name on the jerseys, just have to change the number :hophead:
I think the DB strength at this point is excellent....one of the best positions in the draft. If they passed on Joseph, Allen, Youboty, Jennings, Cromartie, Whitner, AND Marshall (all of which could be #1 picks)...well then lets just say they better plan on scoring 40 points a game next year...
Holmes may well end up the better player, but I agree with Hobbes here. KC needs defense, they do not desperately need a WR. I would like to see them draft one later, but if they don't address the D, they will not win. I personally would take Cromartie here, but we all have our opinions.

OK, this is a difficult call here for the Steelers - quite a bit of talent still available.

The Steelers select LenDale White, RB, USC

OK, there were several ways the Steelers can go here - OL depth would be one, but I don't know that you draft for depth in round 1 when you can find a guy who can contribute immediately. The Steelers primary losses in the offseason are : Randle-El, Hope, von Oelhoffen, and Bettis. They signed Ryan Clark to replace Hope, but you can bet that an RB, a WR, and a DE will be taken in this draft somewhere, if only to replace the depth behind the guys who have been elevated into those vacated roles. At this point, I believe the player who best fits their scheme is White. I know he hasn't run and has come off as very lazy leading up to the draft, but you can bet Cowher and crew will whip his tuchus into shape. They don't need him to contribute right away, but we all saw last year how crucial it is for the Steelers' offense to have a power back to complement Parker - someone capable of grinding out clutch first downs and running the clock to protect second half leads. I believe Staley will do fine in this role, but with his injury history, they could really use another guy capable of doing so, allowing them to keep Haynes in his third down role. In a year or two, White/Parker could be an RBBC in the White/Bush mold at USC, and could give the Steelers the ability to both get the tough inside yardage and have a home run threat in the backfield. White's stock may be slipping, but the guy was just too productive in college to pass up here, IMO.

While I'm not a fan of White at this point, seems there's comparable players available later, at least that would be a comparable fit in Pittsburgh; or perhaps RBs available in trade with a lower pick (Duckett?), this does seem a logical place for White.

White's stock is down, no question, but if he's going to thrive anywhere, it would be Pittsburgh. He can come in this year and take 100 carries, not have to carry the team, and if he isn't in shape early in the season, they can just play Duce and nail his behind to the bench. They have a luxury most other teams don't at that position, and I think it would be the perfect landing place for him.

I think this is the right pick. Personally, he's shaping up (oh, the irony) to be exactly the type of athlete that I can't stand.Personally, I wouldn't touch him with a 9 foot (get it? ;) )pole.

1.18 Manny Lawson (DE/OLB NC State)

No real consensus, went with the impact OLB to round out their 3-4 personnel.
I was busy yesterday, but this is the right pick. It fits the combination of need, value, and historical tendencies.Dallas needs a bookend for Ware. A guy that can also generate pressure from the edge. Having two guys with this ability will allow Dallas to be much less predictable, and subsequently, cause the offenses much more chaos. Any of Wimbley, Lawson, or Carpenter would fit here. Other needs include NT, OLine, Safety, TE, WR.

Value. Pass rushers are always in demand. Getting a top one at 18 is good value. Its doubtful that similar passrush talent can be had at 49 when Dallas picks next. In contrast, a similarly skilled safety or OT can be found at 49. There is no value at NT at this pick. OLB represents the best value at 18.

Historical Precedense: Parcells' teams have drafted defensive front seven guys more often than any other position in his 19 years of head coaching. He has publicly stated that first round WRs and OTs have very high bust rates. He firmly believes that he can find quality WRs late. (Crayton is an example). Meanwhile, Dallas has drafted defense in the first round every year since 1998 when David LaFluer was taken to hopefully replace Jay Novacek. Didn't work out too well. But regardless, defensive front seven is what history says is most likely for Parcells and Dallas.

So OLB is the only position that matches these three criteria for Dallas. They need another passrusher. They represent value. And it fits their leaders' tendencies. Lawson, Wimbley, and Carpenter are the three guys most likely to be drafted by Dallas. Nabbing Lawson was the correct choice.

Good job fellas. There were three picks that I don't really agree with. (Nothing personal, guys. It's just my opinion.)

10 Arizona - perry147 - Jimmy Willaims (CB/Virginia Tech)

That's too high for Williams and if Ngata is still on the board at 10, I think Denny will see a kindred spirit (at least a kindred body shape) and snap him up in a heartbeat.

20 Kansas City-Duckboy-Santonio Holmes (WR,Ohio State)

With his speed and jumping ability, Holmes will give them the playmaker #1 WR they desperately need

Playmaker on offense is not something they desperately need. Gonzalez and Johnson already provide the playmaking ability on O. They need defense. Badly.

24 Cincinnati - Kirby - Leonard Pope (TE, Georgia)

It's possible. But I think TE is addressed in the 2nd round. D-back (safety) is much more likely.

This pick, on the other hand, I loved.

22 Denver -jackal -Deangelo Williams (RB, Memphis)

Williams in Denver could be frightening.

After much thought I think the selection here will be.

2.1 Houston - Jason Allen S/CB TENNESSEE

He has fallen to far to pass up and this does address a major need.

Allen played sparingly on special teams as a freshman in 2002 before taking over as an eight-game starter in the Volunteer secondary in 2003. He spent most of the 2003 season at cornerback but moved to safety as a junior in 2004 and finished with 123 tackles, two INT's and seven PBU. Allen started the first five games in 2005 season before suffering a season-ending hip injury. He recorded 35 tackles, three TFL, one sack and two PBU in less than five games played as a senior. Allen, a versatile DC/DS, was considered a potential first round draft prospect in the 2006 class prior to his injury as a senior. In addition to his excellent work ethic and high character, Allen possesses an impressive combination of size, speed and athletic ability. While the injury still is likely to cause a dip in Allen's draft value, his combine performance did serve as a strong indicator to his return to physical form. On top of easing concerns regarding his hip, Allen helped answer questions about his ability to play the cornerback position in the NFL by finishing near the top of the defensive backs in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump (39 ½"), broad jump (10'11"), short shuttle (3.81), long shuttle (11.17) and three-cone (6.75).

2.1 Houston - Jason Allen S/CB TENNESSEE
:towelwave: This guy is my new favorite player. Mainly because my first and middle names are Jason and Allen (now you all know).

That and coming back from that type of injury shows just the type of commitment that I LOVE to see an athlete have. His hip injury may be degenerative (they said the same thing about Vilma's knee) but he'll give them a few great seasons even if it is true.

I gave serious thought of going with a TE here but decided not to - and would have loved to of had a good OL but the best ones are gone.

All the top guards remain. Why would you go TE when they just acquired Putzier?

I forgot about them signing Putzier.

The only Guard I see is Davin Joseph and he is projected to go in the late second round.

Good Morning,

2.2 D'Qwell Jackson (ILB,Maryland)

They grab the best ILB in the draft to shore up a suspect run defense

Sorry about the wait.

Good pick, he wouldn't have made it past the Titans next pick.
