Locking lug nuts - how screwed am I? (1 Viewer)

Next vehicle I get will NOT have these things installed.  I lost the tool that fits those locking lug nuts.  Can most shops still remove the wheels or am I screwed?

There are a few options out there. Here's a couple

1. Quick light weld of metal piece onto it. Turn metal piece, remove locknut

2. Put on oversized (but still too tight) socket. Use hammer to smash it on, so it is now 'married' to the lock nut. Use socket to remove

but yes, many shops and definitely dealer can remove. Throw away locking lugs on all wheels once done unless you live in the hood

This is how we do it at our shop when a wrecked car comes in with those on it, and no key.

Dealer will sell you a new one...mine cost a ridiculous $35.

Had this happen to me. If you go to a dealership you wont have an issue at all, if you take it to a generic tire place they can cut them off easily. I had them taken off and replaced with standards.

Thanks everyone.... I am somewhat relieved to learn this appears to be an easily solvable problem.  next car I get, I'm telling them to remove those locking nuts and put on regular ones instead.  They're more of a nuisance than anything.

#2 is the easiest way to get them off...that's how most shops do it..

I've heard these will remove most any of them.  Note that I've never tried, but I talked to a guy who used to use them for nefarious purposes...The little pins will slide into the slots on the locking head.
