Lomas Brown: I purposely missed a block to get Scott Mitchell hurtPosted by Michael David Smith on December 22, 2012, 3:44 PM ESTFormer Lions offensive tackle and current ESPN analyst Lomas Brown made a startling confession in a radio interview on Friday: Brown said that he once purposely missed a block because he wanted the man he was supposed to block, Packers defensive end Sean Jones, to injure Lions quarterback Scott Mitchell. In an interview on ESPN Radio, Brown said that in a 1994 game, he purposely whiffed on Jones so that Jones could get a clean shot on Mitchell. Sure enough, Brown got his intended result, as Mitchell was knocked out of the game.“We were playing Green Bay in Milwaukee,” Brown said. “We were getting beat, 24-3, at that time and he just stunk up the place. He’s throwing interceptions, just everything. So I looked at Kevin Glover, our All-Pro center and I said, ‘Glove, that is it.’ I said, ‘I’m getting him out the game.’ . . . So I got the gator arms on the guy at the last minute, he got around me, he hit Scott Mitchell, he did something to his finger . . . and he came out the game. [Lions backup quarterback] Dave Krieg came in the game.”Host Ryen Russillo expressed shock that Brown would admit such a thing, but Brown showed no remorse.“As you can tell, I’m just not a big fan of Scott Mitchell. He’s just not on my Christmas list. He won’t be getting any Christmas presents from me this year,” Brown said. The Detroit Free Press notes that while Brown misremembered some of the details of the game, his basic description of what happened adds up: Jones drilled Mitchell with a hit that broke a finger on Mitchell’s passing hand, and Mitchell was replaced by Krieg. As Brown correctly recalled, Mitchell was having a terrible game, but Krieg played well in relief for the rest of that game and played well for the Lions the rest of the season.Brown seems proud of himself about being the one who caused the team to change quarterbacks, but he shouldn’t be. There’s never an excuse for a football player to step onto the field and not give his best effort, but to fail to give your best effort because you want one of your teammates to get injured is totally unacceptable. For Brown to laugh about it all these years later, as if he’s glad that his actions caused a teammate to suffer an injury, is disgraceful. And for Brown, who is suing the NFL because he says the NFL didn’t do enough to protect players from concussions, to celebrate the fact that he once stood by and allowed an opponent to take an injury-causing free shot at a teammate, is pitiful.

my opinion of this guy just went down the toilet. Cannot believe he would come out and say this. Sounds like a great person

Two things come to mind.

1) how long is Mitchell going to be out?

2) who gets the bump with Mitchell being out?

Since neither of these matter, this whole situation seems pointless to me. I'm sure this and other things happen, we as fans just never know about them.

You ain't never lie. Everyone hated Scott Mitchell. Little did I know that he was the best QB (statistically) in Detroit since Bobby Layne before Stafford came to town  Lomas was still wrong though, and I thought he was a good guy. He sure was dumb for admitting it at least.

I can't believe people say they liked Lomas or thought he was a good guy. He's always been a PoS. This is a guy who chased Ray Rhodes - the opposing HC - into the tunnel seconds after a playoff loss to remind him that he would be a FA in the offseason. Brown eventually signed with the Cardinals, which probably felt right to him, since that was another 50+ season of futility franchise.

Lomas didn't have to come out and admit he didn't have his teammates back. This was already a known fact.

Mitchell would have been killed on his first day in Vietnam.Hell, I would whiff on a block for him, remember him SCREAMING at Fontes on the sideline after his FOURTH interception in the FIRST half of a playoff game in Philly?1. Dont question the coach.2. FOUR INTS in the first half, be a man and take your self out.3. Admit that without a certain #20, you would not even made the playoffs.4. Scott, go see Joey and whine about the Lions together. To the comment that Lomas chased Rhodes down after this loss (the philly game with 4 ints in the FIRST half), do you blame him if this is the garbage you are protecting?Peace

 HE THREW FOUR PICKS LET'S LYNCH THAT MOFO !!1!!1!!1

wow.
meerly pointing out he was THAT Lt. Put in a position of power for no good reason, no leadership skills and would be detrimental to his unit.To contrast, Jeff Saturday would have taken a bullet for Peyton.

It is all about leadership and respect.

Peace

I wouldn't be surprised if this happens more than we realize, but for Brown to come out and say it, especially considered his current stance against the league, is moronic.

Football and war are not the same thing. At all. Find a better way to make your point. Thanks.

A lot of self righteous people in here, being a Detroit fan thought those years and meeting Scott Mitchell and Lomas for autographs on many occasions.

I'm surprised the entire offensive line did not do this to the PoS Mitchell. Everyone takes everything at face value and do not ever understand the behind the scenes stuff or the circumstances, I guess.

I have no problem with what Lomas did, its the way of the world, stop living in the jaded world you think, it is eat or be eaten.

didn't Cassel get hurt when it looked like someone missed a block? yup, but lets not talk about that because that OLman is not honest and admits he missed on purpose like Lomas.

Funny, no respect for a man who admits what goes on in the NFL, he is not the only one who has done htis ladies. Whats funny is I am certain the majority of people on here dislike people at their work place, and make the people they dont like suffer in ways they can, this is how Lomas and others do it in the NFL.

It is like everyone getting mad at the Saints for doing what many teams do with the pay for performance crap.

Is this cut and pasted from a previous thread? If not, I am having major deja vu.Even still, you don't see the ridiculousness of a man suing the league for not being safe enough and then admitting to purposely trying (and succeeding) to get someone hurt?

While I think I agree with you (that this is way overblown), I must say that you have not done your argument justice. Are you ESL? Your punctuation appears almost random and you use some words completely incorrectly. For instance, I think you meant to say something like "utopian" or "dream" in place of "jaded". It would be a jaded person that views the world as eat or be eaten.

It does say a lot about the Lions coaching staff when an offensive lineman is doing their job. This also might explain why the Jets line was so bad this year. They might have been trying to get Sanchez replaced. ;)

On NFL Live, they showed Mitchell's response:

I was floored by that revelation. I had Lomas in my home. I fed him dinner. I gave him and other offensive linemen gifts. I'm dumbfounded that he would do such a thing. I mean, people get hurt playing this game. People have died playing football, and for him to allow someone to take a shot at a teammate, that's crazy. If he had a problem with me, he could have come to me - man to man - and said so. Be a man about it. But to mess with someone's livelihood like that, to mess with their family and their health, that's reprehensible.
Then Lomas was in studio with his fake contrition. "I was frustrated... I shouldn't have done it... blah blah blah." He was almost laughing when he told the story originally. He didn't suddenly start feeling bad about what he did. He's sorry that he's getting KILLED in the media, and rightly so by the way.

What a joke of a response. If he had talked to Mitchell man to man, I'm just sure he would have voluntarily sat because he was playing so awful. :lmao: He talks about his livelihood, but ignores that his performance was hurting everyone's livelihood on that team. If Lomax has talked to Mitchell or even the coaches demanding Mitchell be benched, it would have risked his own livelihood far more than one missed block.

Too bad Brown wasn't playing for Houston when Carr was QB, he would have done the franchise a real service.

Horrible post IMO.
