M.Tolbert looked to have take a back seat last week to Mathews but I know Tolbert wasn't 100% and I believe they had taken it easy on him. That being said, Mathews does look great and looks to be the guy there but now a week later Mathews has a sore foot, and hasn't practiced yet? Do you guys think this week they could take it easy on Mathews and Tolbert could get a heavy work load ? Possibly a sneaky play ? Whats your take ?

I think it is too risky. The game this week should tell us if last week was an anomaly or not. Until I see a positive sign I'm keeping him on the bench.

although Mathews missed a few practices this week, it sounds like he is going to practice in full today. if he doesn't play though, tolbert would be a solid start.

It appears now that both can be productive if healthy and given the touches. If one is significantly more banged up, starting the other is probably more safe than "sneaky" at this point.

I'd at least wait until you hear if Matthews practiced today. He only missed one practice and claims he will be ready to go full speed on Friday.

I am stashing Tolbert on my bench.

Matthews doesn't seem to be a very durable player. If Tolbert gets 75% of RB touches if Matthews goes down (even for 1 game) it would be very useful to have him to plug in. Could come in and put up solid numbers.

I think tolbert definitely still has potential every game if healthy. If matthews does not practice in full, i would expect more snaps for tolbert. However, matthews seemed comfortable in the red zone last week which if it continues takes some of tolberts value away. matthews may also be stealing 3rd downs showing he can catch out of the backfield and block. I still think they use tolbert in short yardage and goaline. Look for the chargers to be run heavy this week given rivers may be nursing a bruised sternum and vjax also with abd injury, no gates. this will give both mattehws and tolbert more receptions. the situation in the nfl changes every week so i would not sell tolbert low, but matthews is definitely trending up while tolbert trending down. I would start tolbert more than a flex type RB this week.

Turner's initial comments after last week's game suggested that Mathews' increased role against the Chiefs was due in large part to Michael Tolbert missing practices. If that logic holds, Mathews could be on the short end of the stick this week. He's a high-risk, high-reward fantasy play.

That line from Rotoworld makes me think the only reason Mathews had the big workload last week is because Tolbert didn't practice and/or wasn't healthy. Obviously, Mathews has been running better than Tolbert but due to his foot and previous injuries I would think they would want to lighten his load a little. I would think we'd see a similar split to the first two week where both backs get around 15-20 touches.

Just when I thought I might be done with this decision every week. I think the smArt play if you're norv is to split the carries, in order to keep Mathews exposure to injury as low as possible. However, who knows if he will do that. I have them both and I thought I might be over agonizing over the decision, but apparently not. Tolbert is my flex and I have foster and sproles behind him. I feel like I have to start tolbert in case he gets the goalline carries. Any other owners of both care to share their strategy for starting/not starting them both? Forgive me if this belongs in the assistant coaches forum.

I would also hope that withought Gates in the lineup he may get more receptions this week...although that didnt work out last week as I had hoped. :wall:

I don't think I'd start Tolbert this week given last week's signs. I expect him to get the back half of a committee over the season, but it's risky given how good Mathews looked last week.

With Gates out, Vjax and Floyd hurt, I think he could be a good.play strictly based on receptions. Especially in a ppr

well now that Tolbert is back to 100% I wonder if he indeed does go back to the 50/50 split or even 60/40 but with short yardage and goalines ? Everything I have been reading looks like it was because he wasn't 100% or is everyone just assumimg Mathews has taking over ?

Maybe a bit of both, but IMO Mathews looked more explosive and like the better runner all three games. Last year really was one of the few years when Norv didn't use a one back system. I can't see Tolbert becoming marginalized to that point, but he may start to feature Mathews a bit more. Tolbert isn't going anywhere but Mathews' production may force him to receive more playing time.

From RotoworldRyan Mathews (foot) and Vincent Jackson (abdomen) both returned to Chargers practice Friday.
all right then, he came back today, I'd heard from close sources that didn't see him there earlier. practice = play.
curious why you didn't just say you were going on close sources... that at least would have made it sound like you weren't simply trolling.
Great source by the way
