Macbook Help (1 Viewer)

I am trying to free up some space on my hard drive but the system information utility doesn't seem to update to reflect files that I've deleted.

For example, I deleted a 5gb movie (put in trash and emptied trash) but the storage tab doesn't reflect the space that I've supposedly freed up.

Is there a trick to this?

Use disc inventory x. It is a free (and safe) program to visualize what's going on with your data.

I think this has to do with Time Machine automatically backing up the file. See if you can restore it from Time Machine, if you can then it is backed up there and that's taking up the space. Basically your mac is telling you that it's smarter than you and you didn't really want to delete that file. I think you'd need to disable local snapshots through time machine.

Thanks--trying it out now.

Next question.

I've deleted some movies from my hard drive but the icons still show up in iTunes. Is there a way to have iTunes rescan the media file and make it current?

Another question. The system utility shows 74.74GB of HD space taken up by "Backups". I backup to an external HD. What is this and why do I need backups on the computer's HD?

As mentioned above, it sounds like Time Machine is taking local backups as well. Check the settings.

It's probably your email or time machine. My biggest complaint of OSx is the backups that just kill storage. What email are you using? I has max mail operating my gmail account with 8gh of mail had after a while it created enough backups to fill the disc. Had to take the accounts offline, which defeats the purpose of it.

I use gmail only. I don't use Apple's Mail program or any other mail utility.

This is very frustrating. Time Machine says that it keeps local snapshots as space permits but doesn't give a way to disable that.

This is the problem with apple. Love the macbook hardware and OSX as an OS, but the rest of the stuff can be annoying as hell.

I deleted some more stuff and the amount in the backup folder increased by the same amount. STOOPID

How do I change that?

Dump the nude photos of Christo, that will free up some space.

Oh, and all that money and you're on a Mac that has used up all of its space??

Unpossible!

Now go down to the Radio Shack and get yourself a 3 Terabyte External Harddrive. Now put all of your naked selfies sitting on the hood of your Ferrari on there. Problem solved.

New question:

Anyone ever change out a hard drive with a solid state drive? An article on Yahoo! said it speeds up the computer and makes things "better" but I know no one that has done this. All for about $200... vs. getting a new computer.

My computer is good for now although, I believe, I have the same model as the guys article. An early 2011 model. My last Powerbook, I had for 5 years before upgrading. Is a SSD a good upgrade that can get an extra 2-3 years from or no?

It is hands down the best thing you can do to speed up/extend the life of a pc right now, (possible exception being if the pc is just woefully short of RAM) Be prepared to trade some disk space though, but the lightning fast boot times are well worth it.

I have 8GB of RAM... not the max 16GB.

Looked at new MacBooks and the 13" ones are expensive... more than the one I have now with fewer features. Was contemplating the 15" but that is sure a pretty penny. Prices went up on these things.

My speed is good for now. Might look into this SSD thing in a year or so when the computer buying is more on my scale. I, honestly, didn't know much about changing the hard drives out until I read the article.
