Mad Max: Fury Road (2 Viewers)

Anyone that scoffs at the notion that Fury Road is worthy of an Oscar should review the following list of Oscar Best Picture winners. Some of these are at best unmemorable, others are simply bad:

The Hurt Locker
Crash
Million Dollar Baby
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Chicago
Shakespeare in Love
Titanic
The English Patient
Forrest Gump
Dances with Wolves
Driving Miss Daisy
Rain Man
Out of Africa
Huh - half of those movies are classics.....

There's something to be said for knowing exactly what the goal of a movie is and then executing it flawlessly. Cramming a bunch of backstory and dialogue into this movie wouldn't have improved it.
See this is what I'm talking about. My rule is: does the movie deliver the promise of the trailer? The answer here is, "Yes." The trailer is bat-#### crazy cacophony. Honestly, the people that didn't like this movie shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Classics that I do not like at all.

it needed boobs
It did need boobs. That's about the only serious flaw in it, though ;)
It had boobs. Remember the milking scene.
I can't believe I have to explain myself here...

There's a fantastic deleted scene with a woman holding a baby. She tries to get one of the Immortan's henchmen to take the baby up into the citadel but when he refuses, she just hands the baby off and yanks out a boob. When the henchman realizes she's nursing, he brings her aboard the lift instead and she hops right on, the baby seemingly completely forgotten. Really an outstanding scene.

Every time you see a vehicle flip or explode, it's a practical shot. The pole cats are real people on real vehicles. The monster truck is really out there in the middle of the desert jumping and flipping.

Dismissing this as just a car chase means you didn't connect with the characters. I suppose not everyone will agree, but I think Furiosa is one of the most engrossing leads in an action movie in years.
They provided almost no backstory for her. Or Max for that matter (assuming you no nothing of the originals). In fact there is very little in the way of character development. Except for maybe Nex or Wex or whatever.

Heh...what a maroon.

Maybe this movie just draws a similar sort of cult thing that avatar did? There were lots of people that really got into the world that was created and forgave the movie for lack of a plot or dialogue. There was one fbg here that almost got to the hysterical obsession level with it. Was one of the stranger subplots I can remember here.

I cut this thing off at the 60% point. Can't see ever investing more time in my life to rewatch it or finish it out.
That was a movie I was thinking about in relation to this. Visually groundbreaking, but ultimately just silly. I didn't agree with that getting nominations either. The difference I see is that Avatar turned into a joke quickly, and I don't remember it having the critical love Mad Max

is being called the best movie of the by a lot of people who's movie tastes normally run right with mine. I don't get it.

97% Rotten Tomatoes, just a reminder it was universally hailed as an instant masterpiece. One of the best ever in this 3-D format in the last 5 years.

It's not just a bunch of fanboys clamoring.

Tried again. Don't get the love. Ok car chase movie, but still a car chase movie. This getting awards for best picture of the year stuff is just silly.
Check out the best picture Oscars from the last 25 years and it's far less silly.
I did, and I still stand by my statement.
Big fan of Chicago?
I didn't say I loved all of them or agree 100% with the nominations. I am saying in a year I think has some fantastic movies, Mad Max getting a best picture nod is asinine - just like I felt with some of the movies you are alluding to.

Hmm, this movie looks like a cocaine fueled action packed thrill ride. I don't like action movies. Can't WAIT to see it :excited:

Nope, need more than this. Hell, Jurassic World delivered on what the trailer was showing me.

I didn't see the trailer. I rarely do. Was it as boring and stupid as the movie?

I admitted that this movie probably wasn't for me to begin with, and honestly probably wasn't going to watch it until i was reading the serious critical acclaim, and that piqued my interest. Could very well be that never seeing a Mad Max movie was the double whammy for me. Just surprised to see so much swooning over what amounts to a better looking version of Death Race.

Hey if people start saying #### like "BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!1" of "Could win Best Picture" these things need to be brought up.

I have no problem with somebody saying "Best action movie of the year/decade/whatever!"
They nominate what 10 movies? A movie that provides pure entertainment in a unique way can be part of this made up list. It was quite a bit better by a large margin in what it did than any other movie this year.

I still don't see this. Was it "slicker" than most action movies? Sure. But I wasn't blown away by anything this had to offer. It looked really good but there better be more than that.

I remember the first time I saw the trailer...with Mad Max standing there next to his car. It caught my attention immediately. Then as the trailer went on it seemed like over the top CGI crap and I was disappointed.

Ended up seeing it and was like...wow...this was so much better than what I was expecting.

I think your last point is something that merits more attention. If you boil it all down, I would venture to guess that the a significant share of bad movie reviews come from the mouths of people going to see a movie that is not "their thing" so to speak.

No ####. You didn't like [insert new action blockbuster]. You don't say. What's that...you don't like action movies and lots of explosions. Then why the #### are you going to see an action movie with lots of explosions?

You know what I mean?

Yep, and I guarantee there are 10 movies that are a lot better. IMO something like Ex Machina is far more deserving as a genre movie that delivers what it was trying to do in spades.

Had to google other action movies of last year here's what I quickly found: Avengers part whatever, MI4, Terminator, Spy, San Andreas, Specter, Ant-Man, Jurassic World. Saw all of those and found Fury Road head and shoulders above.

We'll see what gets the nom but I'm pretty sure I'd put Fury Road in any top 10 list.

I'm sure they will put it in though this is exactly why they expanded the field.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it in the list of nominees. If it does somehow win then it means this was one of the worst years for movies ever.

While it was a straightforward excellent contribution to the genre, at the same time It transcended both the genre and the medium itself. IMO, that made it a great movie. We'll see if it stands the test of time.

Cool. In general, I haven't been all that impressed with this year's crop of films so...it honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was nominated. It seems to be getting a nostalgia-like boost from the fans of the original films as well in my opinion.

Just did a quick search and a "Variety" article had a list. I assume they are in the know: LINK

Haven't seen "Spotlight" probably won't honestly although I'm sure it is excellent. Also haven't seen "Brooklyn" or "Carol".

From that list I'd have Fury Road on par with "The Martian" and "Bridge of Spies".

Said it before would be really shocked if they don't put Fury Road in. This type of interest and discussion is exactly why they expanded the field. I personally think it absolutely deserves to be in the discussion.

There is also no chance it wins.

It shouldn't, but so much of the medium is garbage that in general it fails to live up to it's potential as an art form. So inasmuch as it is a true work of art, I would say it does.

My top 10, that I posted in KPs thread (now updated). I watched MadMax multiple times, and it moved up my list as I did

10. Anomalisa
9. Carol
8. The Dutch Girl
7. The Martian
6. Ex Machina
5. Room
4. The Big Short
3. Mad Max
2. Spotlight
1. Brooklyn
Haven't yet seen which could maybe break in: The Revenant, Creed, Straight Out of Compton

Yeah because someone has a different opinion than you they are immediately fishing.

97% on RT compared to 93% for Star Wars so my opinion isn't even outlandish.
Put me down in this camp as well. I liked Star Wars am super nerd about it but thought Fury Road was a better movie.
will someone educate me here: the tomato meter score is 97% vs the audience score of 86 (starwars = 93/90), Does the tomato meter carry more weight in your opinions?

Quick question...what was the breast milk pumping for?
To make me gag while I ate my popcorn. I think it was a delicacy in their world essentially. There would be very little food or nutrition in post apocalyptic world so milk of any type would be sought after.
