Man of Steel (1 Viewer)

No trailer yet, but I might as well start a thread for this movie. We've seen some bad versions of the Superman franchise (including Tim Burton's now-abandoned effort). I think Snyder is a director that could produce a very cool version of this character.

So just to get the ball rolling:

Multiple 'Man Of Steel' Costumes Revealed

With post-production well underway, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel has been off the grid for several months. The director has been in the editing room working towards a release date that's almost exactly a year away. He says it's "gigantic and crazy" and most people seem to think the first footage from the film will be at San Diego Comic-Con. Until that happens, though, fans have become rabid for new information and finally we have some.

Today brings the biggest Man of Steel update in some time as Warner Bros. and Legendary brought three of the film's costumes, including Jor-El and Kal-El, to the floor of Licensing Expo 2012 in Las Vegas. Check them out below.

Obviously the first two are Superman, aka Kal-El, played by Henry Cavill. The second two are Faora, Zod's evil sidekick played by Antje Traue and the final one is Jor-El, Superman's father, played by Russell Crowe.

We've seen these costumes in different settings when Snyder was shooting in Illinois, but once the production moved to Vancouver, and then to the editing rooms at Warner Bros., things went dark. The fact that the studio has these out on display strongly suggests they'll not only be at Comic-Con, but that footage will be out sooner rather than later.

The Faora costume in particular is kind of interesting because it looks silver in one image and grey in another. I can't tell if that's lighting or what. What do you think of these suits? Are you looking forward to seeing them in person?

Man of Steel is scheduled for release on June 14, 2013.

They are acting as if Superman Returns never happened, correct?

Do any of the previous movies exist in this Superman universe?

Will the John Williams score be used?

Speaking of Superman, here's a funny catfight:

Director Kevin Smith penned a Superman comic awhile back, and someone alleged that director Tim Burton had used some of Smith's story in his now-abandoned Superman film.

Upon hearing this Burton said:

"Anybody who knows me knows I would never read a comic book."

Smith's reaction:

"Which to me, explains Batman."

That's pretty good.

Wasnt kevin smith attached to directing a superman movie before. But he refused to accept a script with a giant spider robot that also eventually made it into wild wild west instead?

I think he wrote it, but they wanted to add that or something.you tube kevin smith spider and I bet you see the vid. Funny stuff.

I was always a superman kid. Loved him. To be honest, though, I wonder if we are "supermaned" out. I mean, there was Lois and Clark, the TV show, there was Smallville, that ran for ten years, and there was Superman Returns. If we are just acting like Superman Returns didn't happen, than I can live with that....but are we going to be forced to watch 40 more minutes of him coming to earth as a baby, growing up awkwardly, going to the north pole, and then finally becoming superman an hour into the movie?

It seems like we've been there, done that.

BURRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Never was into superman and I don't think it works as a modern comic book movie. I think its a combination of him being an all-powerful (ok, one weakness) alien and the suit. The red-blue combo with the old school tights just doesn't work with the "dark" direction that a lot of the super hero movies are taking now. And the fact that nobody can recognize him simply because he parted his hair on the left and took off his glasses just never sat right with me.

:goodposting: :goodposting: :goodposting: Agree with every single thing you wrote here. Also, the fact that they use the same villain in every single movie and all he is is a smart, rich bald guy.

Same with Spiderman.

Comic book movies are often terrible, and Superman is kind of a goofy superhero.

But I think Snyder can make a cool film here

He will certainly make a film that is visually interesting but cool is not a lock (see: Punch, Sucker)
Sucker Punch is a mess. But it's still better than most crappy action movies. If Snyder can make a cool movie about owls (and he did), he can make a cool movie about Superman.

Yeah, I am definitely going to see Superman. I like all of his other films for the most part but, as visually stunning as it is, something about Sucker Punch was just...boring.

I don't know how superman stayed popular as long as it did. Either someone tricks him into getting too close to kryptonite and losing his powers, or in the only good superman movie, a group of bad guys come down from his home planet and... try to trick him into losing his powers. Lois is a superficial ##### who only loves him when he's powerful, lex luthor is a criminal mastermind who is hopelessly outmatched unless he has, you guessed it, a trick to get him too close to kryptonite so he loses his powers, and the whole daily planet job is the only plot mover as they keep sending him to new places where bad guys can try to trick him into getting too close to kryptonite so he loses his powers. If someone tried to write that story today, they'd never get published, but now were on the third or fourth reboot of a franchise that had shows, comics, and cartoons?

This is awesome.

Apparently, Sucker Punch was the first film that Snyder kind of wrote by himself. So while I think he's a very talented visual stylist, he clearly hasn't proven he can write a film.

I think some Superman stories are still reasonably compelling. The problem with the movies, IMO, is the scale of the conflicts is too limited. With a hero as powerful as Superman you obviously have two options if you want to have an element of suspense and drama in your story: find a way to weaken him (kryptonite, giving up his powers, etc) so that he is not obviously unbeatable, or find a foe who is just as powerful as he is, or moreso. I don't know why screenwriters keep choosing the first option when it has been bled dry at this point.

If I were trying to make a Superman movie today I think the obvious choice would be the Doomsday story. Finally, a bad guy even the mighty Superman can't defeat -- the battle between the two of them would unleash hell on earth. It could be like an epic disaster movie, starring Superman. And as an added bonus, the possibility that Superman is killed in the final act -- do the producers go there, giving audiences a downer ending and setting us up for a sequel?

Bill: As you know, l'm quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Superman. Not a great comic book. Not particularly well-drawn. But the mythology... The mythology is not only great, it's unique. . .

Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race. Sorta like Beatrix Kiddo and Mrs. Tommy Plimpton

I'd disagree strongly... if I could

You know I never looked at it that way before. I don't think that's an accurate reading but it's interesting.

The Original Superman and Superman II were both better films than Superman Returns or whatever that was. 25-30 years passed and they made an inferior film.

I just don't think Hollywood is capable of making a good Superman movie. I wait until it hits the red box and maybe then I'll spend $1.29 on it.

General Zod is the antagonist (Michael Shannon), I hope it's successful and spawns sequels just so we can see another antagonist like Doomsday or Darkseid instead of just rehashing Lex Luthor & Zod in origin story after origin story.

this is pretty cool, but I think the writer's putting his own thoughts into superman's head.the more straightforward answer is that clark kent is supposed to be the antithesis of superman, or how the common public perceive superman, as it's a disguise.

he has to eschew the full facemask of a spiderman for a simple pair of glasses to hide his id, unless he vibrates his face at superspeed, or something, so he has to add these other touches to maintain his illusion.

also, being a coward is kind of critical to teh schtick, as it enables him to always run away and find an unoccupied phonebooth.

you'd think superman would hire someone to invent a kryptonite detector
well, usually the kryptonite is hidden behind lead to shield it from his x-ray vision, and I presume that also blocks the radiation so as to make it a surprise.this trick would also probably render any kryptonite detectors useless.

hmmmmm

i was thinking of a "best superman song" poll, but perhaps "which are better, superman songs or superman movies"

You'd think Superman would stop opening safes and other things that are suspiciously thrown in his path by his enemies. Superman doesn't seem terribly bright. Avoid opening things cased in lead (or if you have to do it do it from far away). Bam, problem solved. He's unstoppable.

Feels like they are trying too hard.

I'll be there hoping for better.
