It was a great movie IMO, I realize the Ernest Goes to Camp crowd has a different opinion thoughfinally saw this - one of those movies that is a very slow build....when it ended my immediate reaction was like that's it? Then reflecting on it I appreciated it....Affleck was really good.
Yes, because you haven't used that joke before. Seriously, you can still hate this movie, like serious movies, and love Casey Affleck and his send-up of Bostonians in the same breath. It was a great movie IMO, I realize the Ernest Goes to Camp crowd has a different opinion though
I knew that line would get you to respond, like a moth to a flameYes, because you haven't used that joke before. Seriously, you can still hate this movie, like serious movies, and love Casey Affleck and his send-up of Bostonians in the same breath.
Biggest plot hole, imo.I don't think Casey Affleck's carelessness is what started the fire. Faulty wiring imo. And he should've banged his nephew's girlfriend's mom. Still 8.5/10
Every movie can benefit from a romantic comedy subplot imo. Imagine how much better Silence of the Lambs would've been if Hannibal & Clarice got married at the end, jamming cake in each other's faces while the credits rolled.Biggest plot hole, imo.
I was waiting for a Whiplash moment - "are you rushing, or are you dragging??!!"Saw this awhile ago. Thought it was a good enough movie, but something I'll never watch again. Similar to Requiem for a Dream in that regard - 1 and done.
My favorite part was actually seeing the drummer get blamed for everything in band practice. The drummer always gets blamed - it cracked me up.
Hell or High Water is good stuff.how do you manchester detractors feel about moonlight and la la land? they were both meh for me. havent seen this yet. I liked lion quite a bit.
The nice guys and hell or high water were the best movies I saw last year.
Wow, we really did agree on just about everything other than overall score, which makes me feel like a genius since I highly respect your opinion on movies. I'd be between a 6 and a 7, I think, overall but agree with everything you've written.Very late to the game on this one - I just watched it last night. I don't understand and was surprised at the amount of hate in this thread too - yeah, I am talking to you @rockaction.![]()
I think I am closest to @krista4 on this one, but liked it a bit more than she did. I posted in the movie thread, but will be more specific here:
++s:
- I thought Affleck was fantastic. Such an understated performance of somebody just absolutely shutting down from that tragedy. Basically he seems like he can't go the suicide route again, so has made the choice of punishing himself for life and basically pretending like he is dead.
- Williams was great as well, though not enough of her.
- I loved that there were a lot of things that we had to infer from little moments. The director respected the audience enough to not feel the need to have more dialogue or linger on things more than needed.
- Like Krista said - the little moments! Dealing with the body, unpacking the pictures of his kids, how uncomfortable it was when the girl was hitting on him at the bar, the way the flashbacks are done, and many others.
- The scene with the cops destroyed me as a father. It's one thing to forget something, but the fact that he had the thought that maybe he forgot something, thought "what could happen", and didn't go back just had me sobbing. Couldn't imagine that guilt.
--s:
- I hated the music as well. As much as I praised the director for not holding our hands with a lot of stuff, the music was over the top and Spielbergian in the way it was screaming "this is dramatic".
- I really disliked the nephew. She showed a few spots of emotion (being bothered by his dad's body in the freezer), but mostly it just felt all he cared about was using his uncle as a blocker so he could get his #### wet. Maybe a normal reaction, but I really didn't like him.
Overall I thought it was great though - 8/10 and one of the best of the year.
I haven't seen La La Land and don't intend to, but I thought Moonlight was better than this one. Still, Moonlight didn't pull me in the way it pulled many other people and I didn't absolutely love it. I would put this a bit above Lion, though.how do you manchester detractors feel about moonlight and la la land? they were both meh for me. havent seen this yet. I liked lion quite a bit.

Could be a basic difference in our rating system too. For me movies I think would be in my top 10-15 for a year get 8s. It does seem like it sucked me in slightly more too.Wow, we really did agree on just about everything other than overall score, which makes me feel like a genius since I highly respect your opinion on movies. Weird. I am the opposite. Don't like musicals and really liked La La Land.I couldn't finish La la land. And I like musicals. And films about Hollywood. Just horrible from start to middle.
