That is fair to say but you are now involving the legal system. This incident was not given the opportunity to get that far.I'm just saying that if I'm on a jury, and the facts were that the fan said something inappropriate, I'm not so sure I would convict. So, a word can invoke a punch? That goes against just about everything in the legal system. Sure, my words can have an effect on me that I may not like but that does not give anyone the "right" to cross the barrier of legal/illegal activity either. Why not? I am perfectly fine with Smart shoving the guy. I would have been okay with Smart punching the guy in the mouth.Remember when LeGarrett Blount punched the Boise St. (??) player after the game? That guy probably deserved it too. And how's it working out for Blount?Whatever the guy said, if he said anything, does not give the kid any right to do what he did.
Like it or not but being a racist and using racial slurs, if that happened here, does not give permission to assault someone. Civil disobedience and allowing the law/security to do its job also works wonders. Smart could have come out the victor in a grand way had he mentioned the incident to the ref then security then in a post game interview called this guy out. Instead, he chose the other way which is not going to be in the best interest of himself.
But, this incident only involved a possible word and then a push. If that word is used again in a different setting... what reaction, if you were on a jury, would steer you to a guilty verdict? A punch to the head? A punch with hospital bills? Broken leg? Manslaughter? Slippery slope.
