Marinelli fired (1 Viewer)

From the article:

Believe it or not, Detroit is viewed in league circles as a prime job. They have the first pick in the draft as well as Dallas' first-rounder from the Roy Williams trade, a city starving for any wins and an owner who never meddles.

Makes sense to some degree, if you leave aside the "career suicide" angle.

Good. I hope they purge the whole team (except maybe Kevin Smith and Calvin Johnson). Start completely over, from the top down...

Yes, and a local economy that is completely dependent on the fate of the US auto industry. If the Big Three implode, there won't be anyone going to the games. The local newspaper is dying (Detroit Free Press printing only 3 days a week now), so media outlets to stoke interest in the team are starting to shrivel up.That's not a recipe for financial viability for any NFL franchise.

Stay far, far away. :)

Marinelli's best attribute was the ability to shift blame from an 0-16 season. Get a good coach in place, draft well, make some free agent moves and the Lions should get six more wins next year.

Except that Ford has no intention of doing this. Chances are that Mayhew and Lewand will be back as GM and President. "Let them eat cake"!!

LinkALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman William Clay Ford announced the following today:

The promotion of Tom Lewand to Team President.

The promotion of Martin Mayhew to General Manager.

Rod Marinelli has been relieved of his duties as Head Coach.

The following assistant coaches will not be retained: Joe Barry (Defensive Coordinator), Mike Barry (Assistant Offensive Line) and Jimmy Lake (Secondary). The contract of Joe Cullen (Defensive Line) will not be renewed.

The team also announced that Jim Colletto has been re-assigned to offensive line coach.

Additionally, Dave Boller (Assistant Director of Pro Personnel) will not be retained.

They could draw 500 people to their home games and still be OK thanks to revenue sharing.

So now, any new coach coming in will have to keep Coletto and the RB & WR coaches. There's a recipe for success.Until WCF dies, the Lion's have no chance of winning. No point hoping for things to change. Until that day comes, I expect nothing from this team. I blind squirrel has a better chance of turning this team around than Mr. Ford.

never meddles??? Lots of reports that he hand picked Joey Harrington.

I really am sorry for Lions fans. Nobody deserves this. It's like the scene in Fight Club where The Narrator beats up Babyface. It starts out as a great time like always, but the more the beating goes on, the more disgusted everyone gets.

WCF proves once again that he is the biggest BUFFOON in NFL history. I am at a loss. The Lions will not get 40K a game next year at Ford Field.Tom Lewand is a brown nosing lackey, and Mayhew has been Matt Millens right hand man for 8 years. :goodposting:

Listening to Marinelli presser and all I can say is: Marinelli = Class.

I swear, if the team had any talent we'd be talking about what a good coach he is. Not the best game manager, but he can coach.

Some team looking for a D coordinator is going to be very lucky to have him.

Good luck, Rod.

FU, Ford.

:goodposting: LMAO at not searching for an established GM, keeping Colletto.....not suprised but still laughing.

I can't believe they promoted from within after an 0-16 season.

Actually.... I can.

Thank you Mr Ford for saving me the time of even considering caring about the 2009 season.

 Best of luck Rod. Never had a chance with the crap Millen gave you to work with.

Looks like Brian Billick is a lock for coach as all of the retained coaches have a past with him.

A bit shocked that they didn't find an outsider for GM/President but after Millen probably a bit gunshy to place all that control in one persons hand. We can forget chasing parcells cowher or pioli now.

I'm not sure I agree. I think the guy is class all the way and a great guy, but clearly he is not a good head coach.

Agreed. He is not a good head coach.

So they're not going to even take a shot at a Pioli, Pacells, etc?

They're not going to even give Floyd Reese an interview when he openly asked for the job?

Mayhew/Lewand? Really?

Wow.

The Saints need to get on the horn to Marinelli, and fast.
Let me start by saying I think Rod Marinelli is a class act and has handled himself extremely well. He was baited just about every week at his pressers in hopes he would crack, and he really didn't. I think he's a good guy.As far as being a head coach, his record speaks for itself though.

And as for those hoping to get him as a defensive coordinator... you do realize not only was the Lions' defense bad this year, but it was historically bad, right? As in, maybe the worst defense ever. Bloom, I think it was (ETA it was Chase Stuart link) laid this out in the Lions draft thread.

Now I know he was not given much to work with by Millen. But... he also brought in all his former Bucs (Darby, Smith, Kelly, etc.). That was his call. And - if he was really such a great defensive coordinator prospect, wouldn't he at least have coached this group up to, say, 25th, 27th in the league in defense?

I think Marinelli is a very good defensive line coach - maybe even a great one. When he was first hired, his old Bucs players like Warren Sapp say they swore by him. He seems to be respected by his linemen. He seems to motivate them well. But... only in this capacity.

I think that's where he'd make the best fit going forward: coaching the d-line for a good team. I mean, the Lions' secondary has exactly one pick this year... one!

I wish him well going forward and any team would be lucky to have him coaching their d-line next year.

I had to laugh when Marinell was asked how he got fired.

Rod said "Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew walked into my office and let me know I was being fired"

How could Lewand and Mayhew have the balls to fire anyone with a straight face?

When they walked out of Rods office I have to believe that Lewand and Mayhew chest bumped and started laughing their asses off that they BOTH were promoted. Only the Detroit Lions.

for all the bashing...it should be remembered that a lot of current GMs had very good things to say about Mayhew - he did fleece Jerry Jones in the Roy Williams trade, and if you think about it, working with Millen was maybe the best training he could have had - he knows what NOT to do doesn't he? He can just be opposite Millen and they'll be in the super bowl in 3 years!

Lewand was a no brainer - it was a promotion in name only and just means he'll stay the numbers guy - which he's good at - and away from football operations - which he's not. Let's wait and see what Mayhew does in terms of hiring others and getting some talent evaluators in. For all we know, Goodell and others agreed Mayhew was an up and comer and had proven he has what it takes.

And colletto was demoted to O-line coach - and i do think it seems like Billick will be the new coach. the games he did on tv almost seemed like interviews with him constantly saying "i would have done this and this...Rod did this wrong and that wrong...you have to start by doing x..." the whole game. And he also said it was a dream job for a head coach - look at Sparano...he's set for life after this turn around.

I was watching the game yesterday. Clock is winding down at the end of the second quarter, about 40 seconds left. Lions call a timeout on offense, then run the ball to the left, call another timeout, run the ball to the left, call another timeout aND RUN IT AGAIN!! Why bother calling the timeouts if you are just going to run it out. Terrible coaching. Bye Bye Marinelli, you suck.

For the record Jerry Jones fleeced himself. Jones wanted Roy Williams in the worst way.Say what you will about Mayhew, he was Assistant GM for 8 years, he was in on every decision Millen made.Mayhew has one huge thing in his favor, just like Matt Millen did. WCF likes him personally. That in itself is worth 6-7 years of employment regardless of the results.

I'm still trying to find out why Marinelli did not take the wind in the 4th quarter...that is mind boggling and pretty much sums up the year.

Also, regarding the assistant coaches that the Lions did not fire...they are all under contract and there is no guarantee that a new coach will keep them.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Mayhew because he worked under Millen. Anyone who has ever had an incompetent boss knows how that situation goes. If Mayhew gave good input, it was probably largely ignored.

I'm not saying Mayhew will automatically be good, but he is highly regarded around the league. The Lions could've done a lot worse. I feel a lot better about the GM situation now than I did a year ago.

A bit like McCain and Obama...either would be a vast improvement.

Why would the assistant GM on a team that has had the worst record in the NFL while he has been there, and has had the worst drafting results be highly regarded?? :lmao: There was not been one NFL team that requested to interview Mayhew in the 8 seasons he has been in Detroit.

I hope he succeeds, I hoped that Millen would succeed and all the ones before him.

That was the last straw for me as a Lions fan. Done watching them and caring, Ford must have his yes men to surround him, to hell with winning.

Mayhew is the guy regardless of if the Lions fans like it or not, and that weasel Tom Lewand is the new President.Honestly, I have a hard time even caring who the Lions hire. If Mayhew is the right guy it will be the first time in 45 years that Ford hired the best option. Fords track record at hiring is the worst in the NFL. That is why I am not sold on Mayhew..or anyone WCF likes.

Question from Lions homers

Marinelli seems like a no-non-sense guy who handles being the worst team in history as well as anyone could. he had a deent reputatution (PRE-LIONS) and took resposiblity for the suckitude of the Lions all through the year. Usually even if the guy is not a legitimate head coach, guys like that usually don't totally fail the way that he did in Michigan. What i am missing from thi guy as a NFL coach (head or assistant)?

The good and bad things about Rod Marinelli can be summed up just by reading his bio on the Lions website:
When Detroit Lions Head Coach Rod Marinelli talks about life in the National Football League, he’ll tell you it’s the “non-talented issues” that separate the winners from the losers. While every team has a comparable level of “talent” within its roster, things like: fundamentals… work ethic… attention to detail… leadership… passion… and commitment truly make the difference in the NFL, according to the Lions’ head coach. These qualities comprise Marinelli’s mantra for success, and he will remind anyone listening that none of the aforementioned attributes take any talent.
The problem is, talent does matter. And not every team has a comparable amount of it. Marinelli's a great motivator and teacher of fundamentals, and he makes a great position coach. But when you're involved in picking the roster, deciding who starts, and making strategy decisions... you have to understand your team's strengths and weaknesses. It seemed like Marinelli just had too much faith in guys who weren't any good to do things they couldn't do.The odd thing about the 2008 Lions is that they weren't a bad team when it came to the intangibles. They weren't lazy or lacking in focus. They wanted to win. They just had really bad players. While most of that is the fault of Millen, a lot of it stems from Marinelli's overemphasis on "football character" and underemphasis on talent.

So who's the next guy to keep the coach's seat warm for 2-3 years and then getting fired for not winning anything?

Seriously this place is career suicide for a coach why would anybody come here? I can't think of an example where a Detroit head coach EVER coached again as a head coach.

Looks like Brian Billick is a lock for coach as all of the retained coaches have a past with him.

Browns have asked for permission to speak with Pioli. Cowher has stated interested in NYJ. Detroit? Ho hum...

Lewand and Mayhew are further proof that the Lions is actually a good place to work. No better job security in the league.
