MARK ANDERSON DE CHI (1 Viewer)

i'm trying to decide if mark anderson is worth keeping im my dynasty league. i know it depend on the rules, let me worry about that. he had a great rookie season in terms of sacks, but in 2007 that changed dramatically. what i need to know is this: will he every develop into a full time DE or just a pass rush specialist. did he loose his 2008 starting job to alex brown or is it a platoon situation. is there a position change in his future? any chicago homers have any insight on what the plan is for this guy? or is he just another DE in the crowd

I'm looking forward to some feedback on this as well. I would like to know exactly what changed that caused the dropoff. It's just hard to believe that someone that was so productive could just fall off the way he did. Was it that opposing offenses schemed to defend him? From the games I saw, it didn't appear to be from a lack of effort (see Julius Peppers).

Bottom line, is he a good buy low candidate, or should we look for help elsewhere. I would think if the Bears were moving to more of a rotational situation, that his sacks would increase due to fresher legs (i.e. NY Giants)

I'd guess that the Bears would like to have Anderson as an every down defender, but he'll have to earn that job back. I think there's still Robert Mathis like talent there, but I think he's realistically become a 35-40 solo guy who'll need double digit sacks to be a consistent option.

I'm not sure what to think of Anderson, tough to say if he will be an every down type. I'm sure he will be in the DE rotation. It's interesting Chicago gave Brown a 2 year extension. Brown's contract runs through 2010, Anderson will be RFA in '10 and both UFA in 2011.

I have him in a dynasty league also. FWIW ... I'm keeping him for the these reasons:

Has the frame to get bigger.

I like his motor and attitude.

Is a great athlete, had like a 40 something vertical at his combine.

He's only 24 (be 25 in May).

Is coachable and wants to get better.

Had a very impressive rookie season.

maybe as he physically matures he could get bigger & stronger, though he may not have frame to get a LOT bigger & stronger...

some guys like mathis can make the transition from elite situational rusher to every down defender... anderson may not be that kind of guy...

i was high on him before his draft due to elite measureables (one of best Combines at ANY position in '06), but then my expectations dropped when he went in the 5th, & seemingly to a team that wasn't hurting too bad at position (with o-gun & alex brown)...

i was high on him leading in to his soph season based on outstanding sack numbers as a rookie, & ascending to starter... in '07 he was shockingly ineffective, got pushed around & seemed to wear down, & may have been losing time to alex brown as the season wore on (& i think they just re-signed brown)... i don't recall reports that could have explained the dramatic drop off in terms of injury, but not sure there...

my ranking of him will be much lower this pre-season... i guess i'm not that optimistic for now, but maybe it would be realistic & hopeful to project something between the two seasons, & not assume his stats will be more like soph season than rookie, in '08...

a possible cause for hope is that CHI was seriously banged up last season, at every level on defense (interior DL was ravaged), urlacher had neck problems that may be chronic and slowed him noticeably for much of the season, multiple injuries in secondary (& chris harris traded to CAR)...

having interior DL that can push the pocket & disrupt could lead to more sacks, as could better coverage...

if the DTs can stay healthy, & they get right pieces in place at safety, i could see that being cause for optimism...

the CHI offense was much better in '06 than '07, so with teams playing from behind far more, this of course created more sack opps for anderson as a rookie (& all the bears DEs)... not sure if there is much cause to hope for that in '08... depending on what happens in free agency & draft, you could make a case that the QB, RB AND WR of the future aren't on the roster currently (at least they have their TE of the future in olsen, who is a keeper & has star potential as a RECEIVING TE, imo)... plus they have to rebuild their OL...

* CHI seems to have fallen a lot since '06, arguably to the level of DET in norris division, & appear to have been supplanted by GB & MIN (teams seemingly in disarray at that time)...
