Marshall fire 1, My house-0 (2 Viewers)

Sorry to hear brother. Willing to pitch in a donation if you choose to go that route.

I know it's only the internet and we're all anonymous, but it's true in this virtual way chilling and talking, you're a part of my everyday life, we all spend time together each day. In some weird way, we're all family here.

So, so sorry to hear about this. My family loves spending time around that area (Butterfly Museum up to Flat Irons Crossing) It is so beautiful.

Our house burned down in 2014. Here are a few things off the top of my head:

-You'll likely have private insurance adjusters sniffing around as soon as they get access to the area. From my experience, tell them to piss off. It will prolong the claims process and turn your insurance company from an ally ( or at least neutral) to an enemy.

-Your insurance company should provide a hotel and gift cards for food, clothes, incidentals. My daughter was older than yours at the time (12), but we tried to treat it like an extended vacation

-Your insurance company should also provide enough assistance to cover a rental until the home is rebuilt. My rental assistance was for 12 months. We were in a rental for 17 months due to bullet #1 and some other factors, so we ended up having to pay our mortgage and rent at the same time. Make sure to read your policy inside and out to see exactly what you're entitled to.

-The one area that the private adjuster did provide value was in putting a number on individual small items. The insurance company will likely not attempt to go through the remains of the house and get an exact accounting of your belongings. They use some kind of general estimate. If you have the time and patience to do so, you should. It was a difference of about $10k for us.

Offering you my sympathy Para.  In addition to the above, if you have pictures/videos you saved that include shots inside or around your home, take some time to look at them carefully to see if it helps identify brands/value of your belongings that were lost (that might just happen to show up in the background).  For example if you can show your tv was a $1500 Samsung vs a $400 generic brand, you'll get more value overall from your insurer.  Not a fun chore but could be profitable in the end.

Everything he said but this especially. Some will even tel you that you’re going to have enough money left over to take a vacation. They are awful and just there to get a cut of your money.

I worked in the insurance restoration industry as Forman and all the way up to a supervisor so please don’t hesitate to ask me queuing here or privately.

If you play your cards right you have the ability to rebuild your dream home and will come out better than you started in the end. It’s not going to be easy and as they say in construction - what can go wrong usually does.

Good luck and let us know if you need anything.

Happy New Year? /Ron Burgundy

Heartbreaking. Keep your chin up and do let people here know if there is anything that can ease your nightmare, even just a little. I definitely would.

So sorry about your loss.  Our twins just turned 5 and I think my wife just went through the old clothes to set aside for goodwill.  I know it's boy stuff but if you need some t shirts or anything, drop me a line and we can send some stuff.  I think we just cleaned out and got rid of toys but may have some stuff....

Dammit. So sorry. I echo all the t&p sentiments, as well as the insurance tips. Tell the private adjusters to pound sand.

I know a lot of people (me included) would be hesitant to set up a gofundme in a situation like this, but I really encourage you to do that, even if you only let FBGs know about it. I wanna see Joe make that match, and I'll happily chip in. It's not charity, it's a "tolerance fee" that we're willing to pay you for all the nonsense you have to read in the PSF.

So sorry this happened to you @parasaurolophus.  Make sure you read your homeowner's policy carefully, don't take what they tell you at face value and reach out to a professional if needed.  I had a client whose house burned down in 2019.  She had to hire us just to have a voice with her insurer and we eventually had to sue them to get her what she should have received based on her policy. I was honestly disgusted with the run-around she was getting - should never have had to pay a lawyer to get them to honor their agreement.

I appreciate all the support. I won't be setting up a gofundme as money isn't something we are hurting for. Our insurance will cover almost all of the expenses. My employer has also some generous programs for this kind of stuff if I need it.

One thing I may ask is some help in perhaps picking up some replacement keepsakes for my wife/son/daughter. Things that may be specific to certain areas.

For example the very first stuffed animal I ever bought my daughter was an Okapi from animal kingdom lodge. For all I know this is just a readily available brand that I could just get online, but I don't know. If any of the regular Disney guys could find that out for me and help me find one, I would be unbelievably grateful.

ooooof  so sorry.  let us know how to help.  a friend of mine lost everything in a fire, he wasn't home at the time.  so he only had the clothes on his back.  he chose to go all cathartic and use it as an awesome fresh start.

There are enough friends on this site that I'm sure you'll be able to find anything you're looking to replace.  I know if I were in your boat, the most devastating immediate loss would be my kids' favorite stuffies.

I can't even imagine ... sorry to hear of this, parasaurolophus.

Anything specific to the New Orleans area, or Louisiana, or the Gulf Coast that you're looking to replace?

On it.  I love stuffed animals.  I think maybe a comfort Fuzzigle or two might be nice.  It probably needs to wait until you have someplace to put them (and an address).  I expect a Disney person is the one for the okapi, but I can probably find that or any other specific item you might think of.  I am a search and shop queen.  Hallmark ornaments, collectibles, jewelry, Warner Bros., or any other sentimental thing, if you can provide a description I can likely find it.  Just provide a list as you think of them.

Okapi -  should I just order it now?  What size was it?

This sums up my feelings as well, @parasaurolophus.      I am truly sorry and your post brought tears to my eyes.   Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, or try to track down in WI.

Heartbreaking news.  I’m so sorry for all you are and will be going through with your family.  I’ll keep alert to how we can help to try and replace items for the kids.

I'm sorry about what you and your family are going through, P.  If there are any keepsakes, or anything your kids have mentioned about wanting from NC, let me know.

Just awful...so sorry you have to go through this.  Glad to here you and your family are OK.   It sounds like between your insurance and employer you have some resources to tap which is good.  I wish you well in navigating the aftermath.  Hang in there.  You will bounce back.

Positive thoughts from my family to yours. I know you don't want donations, but definitely send out a list of items you would like replaced.

Okapi has been located by a friend of mine. Thank you though so much for looking!

@Doug B if you could get your hands on a cup from huge ### beers, I would be thrilled. We kept our cups from there and we turned one into my daughter's paintbrush cleaning cup for water colors. I modified it to say "Huge Grass Bears"

Keeping cheapo plastic cups from places kind of became a thing in my family. Not talking souvenir cups, I literally mean like if you bought a beer at the ballpark and it came in a plastic cup, we kept it(unless it was just plain).

Or Baltimore / DC?
A napkin and menu from obryckis. They closed the one we went to back in 08 ish, but I think there is still one at the airport. We have a great photo from there of my son smashing crabs( which is saved on the line) and we made a little picture box thing with a napkin and a menu. Technically not a menu, was just a piece of paper saying the price of blue crabs, but anything would do. It was folded up so just putting it in a regular envelope would be fine.

I was watching this on Denver TV, never really seen a fire like this before.l.  It was a miracle that people escaped it.

Para - if you need anything from the Great Lakes region, I can help.

Ok, I'm on it.  Shame that they closed the Fells Point restaurant as that's within walking distance from my house.  The only brick and mortar Obryckis is past security at BWI.

@parasaurolophus

I'm just reading this now and I'm so sorry about your loss.  I'm glad you and your family made it out safe, though, and that's all that REALLY counts.  Things can be replaced, people can't so at the very least everyone is safe.

Let me know if there is anything else you need or we can do for you.  I'm also in the Great Lakes Region like @FairWarning and I am ready to be activated if you need me.

Holy moley.  I’ve been a policy holder with Erie for over 25 years, and they have always been above board.  I have relatives that work there, and they are a highly respected company.  This just doesn’t sound like them.  I hope this was just a one-off experience.
