Marvel Cinematic Universe - Fantastic Four - No Homework Required (7 Viewers)

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was really good. But agree the train has definitely slowed. I'll go see The Marvels but I'm not super pumped up about it. I haven't seen Ms. Marvel, which I probably need to watch before I do that.
 
We will still be going to the Marvels opening day. Like for others, many of the recent movies have just been average for us but absolute stand out gems like Spiderman 3 and Guardians 3 are keeping us coming back.

My whole family is not enjoying the multiverse story line though and that is making looking forward to the bigger culmination movies almost impossible. Loki 2 is the very first Marvel tv show or movie we have skipped.

I remember being nearly breathless waiting for the Thanos movies. Now I just feel a sense of cringe thinking about the upcoming Kane movies. The fact that they may have to change the actor makes it even more awkward.

This is where I am, although maybe cringing a little less but just waiting for some direction to emerge. It just seems all over the place where as the Infinity Saga had an endpoint you could see them moving to this many movies in.

I've watched Loki and enjoyed though. The kid hasn't been watching as much as she did but we are still planning to see the Marvels this weekend.

Not sure how I feel about the direction they are taking up in the D+ shows. Some good with the showrunners and more oversight, some questions with the new "Spotlight" tag meaning you don't have to know anything previously to watch the show. Echo gets the first "Spotlight" tag and the trailer looks good. Dark and gritty and closer to the Netflix shows. Hopefully this helps DareDevil take up the same style after the rewrites and reshoots.
 
We'll be going to see The Marvels also. It's almost a ritual with my youngest son and I. We haven't missed an opening weekend yet. My middle son used to come with us, but he's too cool for us (SR in HS), and says he has better things to do. He said the same thing about GotG 3, AntMan, and last SpiderMan. It's a fun tradition I have with my son(s) that I hope continues for awhile, no matter how crappy the movies become.
 
The final trailer just aired on MNF, the trailer does not inspire confidence. The first 1/3 of the trailer featured captain america, thanos, and ironman and then the rest of the clips were all action.

There is no funny dialog in the first half of the show that they can highlight in a trailer :no:

They need to scale back the power level, they have not learned the lessons from the comics, the best sellers are never the most powerful. Wolverine, spiderman, daredevil, etc all pail in power to jean gray, thor, prof x, any of which could wipe the floor in a 1 on 3 matchup.

However, alot more spiderman comics have been sold than prof x. The stories are alot more relatable when the majority of the characters are only slightly more powerful than the average person.

The marvels is going to contain 3 extremely high powered characters, the whole thing is going to be closer to a dragon ball z episode than a typical marvel comic.
 
Seriously one of the more pathetic trailers I've ever seen for a marvel movie. Can't wait to see this one bomb. It might inspire some change.

Typically movies will try to motivate the reviewers that will be positive to review the movie as early as possible. It is quite common for a bad movie to open with a much better rotten tomatos score than what it ends up with.

The marvels may finish dead last when it is all said and done.

it has been climbing steadily. Sitting at 62% now after 156 reviews. There are enough reviews for a consensus now. Overall better than I expected to be honest. Here is the consensus.

Funny, refreshingly brief, and elevated by the chemistry of its three leads, The Marvels is easy to enjoy in the moment despite its cluttered story and jumbled tonal shifts.

I know they lost a ton of the best characters - but the formula of a clear build towards Thanos was amazing....how did they lose sight of that? This is an uninteresting mess.

I don't think they lost sight of it at all. They are using almost the identical formula they used for Thanos as they are for Kang.

The two big differences is they are trying to shoe horn in multiple tv shows into the arc, and most importantly, very few people are enjoying the Kang multiverse story line. The story line is at best confusing and at worst boring and uninteresting as you suggested.

I may be in the top 1% of Marvel fans (in terms of not being too critical) but this Kang arc does not have me looking forward to the two Kang Dynasty movies at all.

Fair observation - I was really into the early shows then it just got too much - the Thanos story was so clear and interesting where this is just a confusing mess IMO.

Obviously they lost their main characters - any news of a possible reboot like X-men did?

Iron Man and Captain America were much lesser Marvel characters at the time those movies came out. Ultimately the perfect casting and the execution were so good that the fans fell for them - but it isn't like there aren't 100s of characters to build around.

The Multiverse storyline is confusing and it lessen stakes - I get those criticisms, but the character of Kang is very interesting and the actor is doing a great job with it. I think the hope for Marvel is getting it right with the remaining "franchise" characters like Spiderman, Fantastic Four and X-Men.

It is worth noting that a day does not go by where speculation that Majors will be replaced as Kang is not helping things either...

That's disappointing because the guy can act and bring gravitas to the character. I've heard the actor could be replaced or they may switch over to Doctor Doom. Hopefully the guy is actually innocent and things can move forward.

These two seem to go hand in hand if you believe the rumors. With Majors' issues and the fans not loving the Kang phase, reports flying that they may look to bring everyone back. I would hate that idea personally. To me the issue is they have not really given a cohesive direction in the movies. Yes on paper everyone seems to know where its going, but in the movies and shows its all over the place and causing a lot of loose ends as the universe expands.

Agreed. It took 10 years to go from Iron Man to End Game - but it was the storytelling and the cohesiveness that kept everyone engaged. Now I feel like they are rushing to shove Kang into everything within a 5 year period. They are rushing and not really tying things together. I'm sure there are bits and pieces, easter eggs you could point out, but its still lacking a storyline.

If Majors is replaced or suddenly ignored by Secret Wars, then what was the point? I've heard that they would switch out Kang for Dr Doom....like he was behind a multiversal war - what? Doesn't make sense. The pieces aren't quite lining up, and I'm ready for it to be over in hopes that they correct their path after this is done. There are a lot of good Marvel storylines out there. I'm ready to see them go back to the original storytelling model and start over. Supposedly that's the end game in this phase. But I'll believe it when I see it.
 
If I was head of Marvel here is what I would do.

1. Really ramp down avengers and stick to stories with 2-3 characters.
2. Do a dark coen brothers like comedy featuring Gambit in the deep south over a 10 part miniseries
3. Do a Domino movie if she is not in Deadpool 3
4. Do a gritty crime drama featuring Bishop
5. Do an X-men movie ala avengers against the sentinels, bring in some of the other avengers to help out like spiderman and antman.
6. Go back to doing other small stories with not godlike characters.

I have stated previous times, but will state again. I am a big nerd and read most all xmen/avenger comics released from 1990-2008. And I would read the Gambit, Wolverine, spiderman, books as well. Not just the main series. The reason I state this is because the vast majority of the comics do not have the stakes that the last few marvel movies have. The x-men spent alot more time preventing their house from being destroyed or saving an individual person than they do fighting apocalypse.

Loki has high stakes, but that is different. It is not just him fighting a big bad it is him unraveling a mystery and is one of the few things that makes sense in the new multiverse they put together.

But bishop as a gritty crime drama? :oldunsure: Granted I stopped reading comics not that long after he debuted but that’snot how I remember him.

Man, Loki season 2 was great. The finale was awesome, and I think they provided some clarity going forward. Spoilers below:

I think they may have well just written Jonathan Majors off completely. The purpose of the TVA is to be on the watch out for Kang variants. They mentioned there was one Kang situation, but the team on Earth 616 (the "sacred" timeline) took care of it. I think perhaps they ditch Kang completely and go the Dr. Doom route. I'm not sure why they are hesitant to just replace the actor. Sylvie was a variant Loki, Kang could easily look like someone else (even switching genders).

Not really looking forward to the Marvels but I'll probably go see it. We have the AMC A list thing where we get 3 movies a week, so no real extra expense.

I believe the 616 reference was to Ant-Mana and the Wasp: Quantumania, correct? I don't think this points it in either direction although you could be right.
 
Just got back from The Marvels. It was a little better than I expected.

If you did not like the color and quirky nature of Ms Marvel, you won’t like this. It also draws from multiple tv shows so if you are just a movie goer you may miss out on a few things.

I break down the movies into three tiers. Top, middle and bottom. I place this movie near the top of the bottom tier.

I believe the 616 reference was to Ant-Mana and the Wasp: Quantumania, correct? I don't think this points it in either direction although you could be right.

We'll keep doing spoilers for the time being :)

I was talking with my son and mentioned the 616 reference and essentially said it was Quantumania. He said they actually said an "adjacent" 616 universe, so one that was pretty much 616 but not exactly like it.

They will likely keep Kang Dynasty since they announced it, but I think it gives them wiggle room if they just want to ditch it entirely.
 
I liked Loki but was a bit disappointed by the finale. It feels like it made everything that came before it a complete waste of time (which is funny because he said that during the episode).

Just got back as well. Son and I enjoyed it. Went in with low expectations, and it really wasn't that bad. Some feel of GtoG and Ragnarok. Fun movie that didn't get too deep in itself. Good humor with some good action scenes. It's a middle tier movie for me. I could watch it again if it was on tv, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Loved both seasons too. The best Marvel product since Endgame. Though that honestly is a pretty low bar. But it doesn’t give me hope they can right the ship.

Loki was great and I agree that it’s one of the best things since Endgame. But, IMO, Wandavision was just as good, even though they’ve essentially trashed the entire show with how they’ve handled Scarlet Witch and everything that happened in that show since then.
 
We just binge watched Loki. It was pretty good, but it just feels like the show was made to be able to easily move on from Kang and Majors if all the allegations are true. Feels like Marvel is trying to thread the needle here, instead of picking a lane.
