Mass Effect - Andromeda (1 Viewer)

FInally playing through this after the patches. It's ... ok. Writing is C level, and (only?) one cutscene has been ruined by animation issues. However, the way the game doesn't let you save during extended combat sequences is absolutely unconscionable. How is this a game feature in 2017?

Yea I didn't get that at all. Doesn't really matter much after you level up high enough but early on not saving is annoying as hell.

I got about 30 hours into it and stopped playing... I had a blast at first but after a while it got old.  Doubt I'll go back.

I was really excited when I heard about a new Mass Effect. But after reading a bunch of the outtakes, and then what I read in here, I never even bothered. So disappointing.

Why is the writing "C level"? I'm still early into the game but the main story is interesting and moving at a good pace. Not sure there are any characters I "love" yet but that is difficult to judge, I mean how would I feel about any of the characters from 1, 2 & 3 if I had 90+ game hours in them before even meeting them?

I must not have hit the cutscenes you are referring to yet.

My biggest problem, so far, is just trying to grasp how big this game is and how that will help with my play style.

Either way, I am enjoying it so far.

This is one of the best sprawling sci fi games I've ever played. The fact that's it's Mass Effect is why it's been criticized to death. If this was a brand new game, there would be a lot more leeway given for the size and scope of the game.

Andromeda is to Mass Effect what the Phantom Menace was to Star Wars.

A complete letdown.
The Phantom Menace was not a "let down" it was just a poorly made film on almost every level, but at least it had the backbone of a good story that helped more fully developed the history of the Star Wars universe we all grew up with.

Right off the bat in the intro, even the casual banter seems incredibly awkward and forced. The game assumes an emotional connection with your family that it doesn't bother to set up. There are lots of other instances of that kind of stuff that I've run into early - Cora talking about how amazing it is that the team bonded so closely, which occurred right after I recruited the last team member and there'd been almost no group interaction or achievement prior to her comments. It's far short of Bioware's normal work, even Inquisition which I thought was disappointing on that front as well. I'm still early so I wouldn't typically render a verdict on this yet, but my experience is consistent with all the major reviews, so I'm not optimistic it will change.

Like I said, it's ok and I'm having some fun with it so I don't mean to sound too negative on it, but it feels like a B- game in an A+ franchise. The studio general manager just left and they are bringing in the guy who ran the first three MEs, so hopefully that bodes well for the future.

Apparently you saw a different Phantom Menace.

Nope. Hated it on almost every level. It surpassed "let down" by a wide margin because we wanted Star Wars and got Speed Racer. But the underlying story had legitimate substance and made for a plausible overthrow of the Republic.

Well I disagree about the banter but we may play Ryder using different "emotion" dialogue choices. I think they actually write him very witty at times.

However I absolutely agree that the whole assembling of the team was completely rushed and they are definitely trying to force a sense of camaraderie well before the team has even had much opportunity to work with each other.

On the plus side the political/power struggle on the Nexus between Addison, Tann, Knesh and Kandros has a feel of authenticity and I love the mutiny angle as well.

They actually just released a book about the story surrounding the mutiny. Looks interesting.

Finally finished this. I don't really have much to add other than what's been said, either here or in the review community at large. Above average game play mechanics + average-ish writing (by industry standards, but this is the worst writing ever in a Bioware game) + poor open world execution = C+, maybe a B- game. If we had more choices in the AAA RPG space, I might have rated it lower, but it's worth a play through for fans of that genre given that decent ones are only released once every year or so.

Spent about 60 hours to get to 94% completion. I'll probably never pick it up again, as there are almost no choices you can make that will meaningfully change your experience. Coming from someone who has probably completed 15 or so runs through ME1-3, that's a disappointing. In an unfortunate twist, it looks like they made the narrative so linear to leave the story open for some interesting sequels/DLC, which are of course not going to happen now.

I just finished the Destiny 2 story and it made me appreciate this games ending a bit more. Obviously Destiny has other hooks and such but the ending of this Mass Effect was pretty good.

Was there a story for Destiny this time? I thought it was all about loot and guns and loot to get guns.

Yeah there's an okay story but it is like a Diablo game in that loot is a major driving factor. The story is not good enough to warrant a purchase though. Just to be clear. If you enjoy looting and shooting it's a pretty good game.

A big problem with the story is that it could've been way better. It had the ability to be Mass Effect like of building your team to fight the big bad guy. But it didn't miss the mark as much as it just didn't even take the shot.

That seems to be what the people want unfortunately. Everyone enjoys these run and gun, loot driven games these days. No one cares about a story.

I think there was period where that seemed to be the direction but it seems that was just a fad or niche thing that got too far into the main stream and is swinging back the other way.

Titanfall 2 added a story. Destiny 2 focused more on story. ME:A got knocked hard for it's story not being up to par for franchise expectations.

For those who have played it and found it disappointing... at what price would you recommend letting it drop to, to be worth the cost?

I guess I was more than disappointed with it and wouldn't find it worth the time at any price. But consider me on the extreme end of the negativity spectrum on this game.

It's been floating around $20-30 and it's well worth it at that price.
Got a new SSD today as I realized I don't have room for any more games, and then put in an order for Andromeda. Had a $10 gift certificate with Best Buy, so costing me $11 total. Won't get it until Thursday though.

It’s $13 new on amazon, cheaper than ME3. Lots of retailers are apparently desperate to get rid of this inventory.

I’m really glad I waited 3 months to play this - to their credit (sort of), I only saw one of the bugs shown in that video after all the patches.
Developers get tarred and feathered for releasing broken, unfinished products but they deserve some credit for fixing post-release issues too.  If you look at the No Man's Sky debacle then and what Hello Games has done with it since it's like a totally different game.

Nice insider information basically confirming what we've thought for years.

In the interview, Heir really lets fly at EA, signalling that the rise of microtransactions and the addition of often redundant multiplayer components are destroying the experiences for single-player gamers.

"This is definitely a thing inside of EA. They are generally pushing for more open world games, and the reason is you can monetize them better,” Heir went on to say. “The words EA use are ‘have them come back again and again.’ Why do you care about that, EA? The reason you care about that is because of microtransactions--people buying card packs for the Mass Effect games in multiplayer, etc. That's the same reason why we added multiplayer to Mass Effect 3, right? To get people to keep coming back to a thing to ‘just’ play for 60-100 hours."

"You need to understand the amount of money that's at play with microtransactions," Heir goes on to say. "I'm not allowed to say the number but I can tell you that when Mass Effect 3 multiplayer came out, those card packs we were selling, the amount of money we made just off those card packs was so significant that's the reason Dragon Age has multiplayer, that's the reason other EA products started getting multiplayer that hadn't really had them before, because we nailed it and brought in a ton of money. It's repeatable income versus one-time income.

man, I just realized, I've been waiting for EA origin to put this back on sale because I like my games digital, but I don't think it matters with EA stuff. I can buy physical at BB or amazon then use the CD key to unlock it in origin. Am I correct on that??

Finally got this and started up on wed. Game is ok so far, but on PC and having some really bad audio popping/crackling issue. Anyone else run into this??? It's kinda ruining the game for me. Updated drivers and such. Searching on the web mainly suggests video issues causing it due to under powered card, but I'm running a way high end card, and my fps never drops below 80, so don't think that's it.

Anyone run into anything similar??

Not sure only played Xbox version. There's gotta be something out there on it. Some setting to tweak.

Still haven't installed it.  I see a thread that includes Logitech mouse software causing sound issues, and also "turned off the usage sharing in game data collecting and the game cleared up significantly. It's under the online options".  Hope that helps.
