Mass Effect - Andromeda (1 Viewer)

I'm listening to the latest IGN Xbox podcast - one of their staff got to play it for a couple hours. She didn't seem to be in love with it but didn't come out and say it was disappointing either. Apparently combat has a very different feel because they completely changed game engines. A lot of the artwork and graphics were good, but character modeling is a little off. It's worth a listen

I'm ignoring everything from here on out. Actually I've been doing that since December. Just want to experience it with as little expectations as possible.

I've got teak so freaking hard over this drop I could knock out a Krogan with it. No reviews will change that.

I'm getting the game on 3/16 thanks to EA Access. Unfortunately it's only a 10 hour preview. I'll have to spread that out till 3/21. Not sure what the limitations are for it but I have it installed and ready to go.

Based on the picture you posted, I'm guessing that you'll burn through those 10 hours in the 10 hours after it's available.  :D

Is this a good place to mention that I have a sealed never opened copy of ME1 collector's edition?  Any way to find out how much something like that is worth?

I have EA access, can I get in on that deal?

The free trial button is there! But clicking it only makes a noise. Nothing happens! Why do you torment me EA!

Then this should be a hard pass for you.
Skyrim and Fallout aren't my thing either but ME2 is one of my all time favourites. I really liked 3 as well. I can't comment on the first one because I didn't play it.

I much prefer the story driven RPGs, but if Skyrim has too much dialog for him, he probably won't like ME.

Got done streaming for about 4 hours. Gonna blow through that 10 hour preview.

I like it so far. Hasn't grabbed me yet but the setup is decent. Combat is way different. The cover system is almost like ME1 again. Which is weird. But I think it's that way cause the jetpack whisks you around the battlefield so smoothly. Can't be suctioned into cover for that to work well.

Some of the voice acting has annoyed me so far. Just doesn't sound right. Hopefully I'll get used to it. The graphics are a mixed back. Definitely larger areas and more expressions on faces but the look on some of the side characters is just off.

All minor nitpicks that I'll probably get used to.

Played some last night too. Seems like another solid game, I like the combat, but nothing earth shattering. Feels like another installation of the same game.

One minor complaint: The text is wayyyy to small and hard to read (especially on things like containers and objects in the world). I didn't waste time looking for a setting to improve this, but I hope there is one.

As much as I like this series, it also seems that it's best to wait for DLC and bugs/updates to be fixed before diving in.

there are an unbelievable amount of games that are released with the small/unreadable text issue. Dishonored 2 was a recent game that suffered from a bit of that, but at least it wasn't an RPG. such a big, and one would think easily fixable, problem.

Forbes article saying that the "First Impressions" preview style is a bad idea.

"It is impossible to fully judge characterization in a Mass Effect game when you just get a few conversations and cutscenes with various characters in the first few hours. Sure, they can make bad first impressions and there can be bad lines here and there, but would I have been raving about Garrus and Ashley and Kaiden in the first three hours of the original Mass Effect? Probably not. Sure, they’re iconic now, but it is way too early to judge stuff like that."

That point really stuck out to me. Garrus especially. I thought he was a weak character when I first started playing but he was a "must have" by the end. Regardless of his skill set and the situation.

Edit: I should say that this article is likely in response to the mostly negative "impressions" so far.

If this is truly more open world, first impressions are going to be worthless imo.

4 player co-op?

Is it the campaign or just one off rushes, capture the flag etc?
Mass Effect: Andromeda's four player co-op mode has been detailed (finally) in the latest official video from the Andromeda team at EA. By all accounts it looks very very similar to the co-op mode from Mass Effect 3, which of course, isn't a bad thing.

The four player online co-op mode is completely separate and optional from the single player campaign. Players will choose a character, a loadout, and some items to bring into each mission as you take on successive waves of enemies, complete objectives, and eventually escape the map.

Yep, I'm out.   I'll grab it for $25 in 6 months if it seems like something I really want to play

Love the series. But I'm in no hurry. ME had been out for years before I found it. I'll let y'all work out the bugs, get it all patched up, and the wikis established. I'll get it about $20 bucks from now. Nowhere near done with Horizon anyways.

Another 2 hrs on tonight. The worlds are friggin massive. I was at an Outpost. The Outpost is nearly the size of an ME1 explorable area when you landed on a planet. The map for a planet is ridiculous. An Outpost is a small blip on this massive map. The scale of the game did not let us down so far.

Same. With how much time I get to play nowadays, it's just not worth buying games early anymore. I'll let them patch and come out with an ultimate edition later on for $20.

Does anyone else not have an issue with text size? I use a old monitor, sit a decent but away from it and have never noticed text size issues...

No comment on ME, but I've noticed that some games have an infatuation with tiny text that I can barely read on my 60" television.  It's not game-breaking, but it's annoying.

ME text size is fine. But there have been games like Dead Rising where the text is microscopic. Fortunately it's not really important.
