mathmatics behind a balanced fantasy football scoring system? (1 Viewer)

My keep 3 league is a bit insane on QB scoring, 6 pt tds (which is no big deal) but for yardage it is 1pt per 15 yards passing. In all other ways it is a standard PPR league. But with the way passing offense has ramped up in the past few years, QB scoring has become way unbalanced, at least IMO. So I'm trying to convince my league mates to roll back yardage scoring, but since this is a keeper league, those with Brady/Brees/Rodgers aren't exactly excited to do so.

I'm looking for a well reasoned objective synopsis on the hows/whys of a balanced scoring system, does it exist??

My start 2QB, 3-keeper league is the same way. The top 4 teams last year all had 2 top-10 QB's on their teams. Didn't really matter who else they had on the roster (to an extent) because their QB's dominated the scoring so badly. Obviously the teams with the stud QB's don't want to change a thing, but at some point, the league becomes almost insolvent (not sure that is the right word) because 5 or 6 of the teams don't really stand a chance. You can load up on all the stud RB's/WR's in the world, but rolling out Big Ben/Freeman against Brees/Stafford (for example) is going to get you killed almost no matter what.

I think that keeper/dynasty leagues have to adjust scoring systems every once in a while just to keep it fun for everyone, and to keep crappy teams from throwing in the towel and quitting the league.

you can't change scoring rules in a keeper/dynasty league. sorry.
Yes you can.
I suppose you can do what ever you want, but no way would I support it. Not a chance.
We just did after 20 years in the same system. However we ran the numbers so the skill players got close to the same as the had before, just a different way to score. Only players that got the axe were kickers who had gone nuts. BTW, what about that K ball that was supposed to limit FGs. Now everyone better be able to kick 50 yarders and even 60 yarders. Some 'K' ball.As far as QB's scoring, IMO, they should be the most valuable in any FF league, just like the NFL. Lose your franchise QB, you are done, lose your top RB, meh, someone will pick up the slack. Packers, Saints, Giants - latest SB winners with top QBs. Teams with top RBs are batting zero.

Dude, thanks for posting this!
I never hit the Shark Pool anymore, but look what's here the one day I peek back in...Luckily that article has no published date on it, as I feel old already. But, now that I look it over again, damn that's some brilliant work. :P
and thanks for writing it!

I'm of the opinion that you want the top performers at all positions to be scoring roughly equal point totals. The big reason why is as a firewall against injuries. Going back to VBD concepts, imagine the top RBs and WRs scored 10 points a week, while the worst scored 5 points a week. Now imagine the top QBs scored 110 points a week, while the worst scored 105 points a week. From a strictly VBD standpoint, all three positions are "balanced". If you lose a player for the season, you should be able to find another player of roughly similar quality to replace him with, regardless of position. However, if you lose a player to injury at halftime, your expected outcome is radically different depending on what position he played. If you lose an RB or a WR, you can still win if you have a strong enough team. If you lose a QB, you could have the best team in the league and be facing the worst team in the league, and that's still a guaranteed L.

If you have unanimous approval, you can do whatever the heck you want in any kind of league whatsoever. Also, if your league has rules on the books outlining what steps must be taken in order to change scoring rules, then you are fully within your rights to change the scoring rules, provided you follow the procedures to the letter.

you wouldn't either if you had those guys. you can't just change the rules because your team is bad. do us a favor and never commish a league
