I'm willing to bet that Powell isn't the guy who will get those carries especially with traditionally grinders like Khiry Robinson and likely Karlos Williams after his excellent free agent visit on the roster.

He's not a 3-down back. I just think you're hypothetically banking on a guy who probably won't be the main beneficiary if Forte were to get hurt.

Forte has only missed 9 of 128 career games. You're better off taking Alfred Morris as Elliot's backup or drafting Doctson and sit on your leagues #1 waiver priority waiting for someone's stud RB to go down and steal their handcuff.

Forte has been an RB1 every single year in PPR. He has been an RB1 almost every single year in standard. Yes, we know about his horrible goal line conversion rate but he is still always an RB1. When Bush was taking all the goal line carries, Forte was an RB1. Through Lovie, Trestman and Fox....RB1. Through Turner, Martz, Tice, Kromer, Gase....RB1.

If you want that in the 4th, take him. If not, don't.

I know all about his past.  I'm a Bears fan and he's been one of my all-time favorite players.  When it comes to fantasy football this year I'm staying away though.  Everything he's done with the Bears really doesn't mean much to me with him switching to the Bears.  I know he can do well there but I feel his ceiling is low.

Just because he was a RB1 in the past it doesn't mean he will be in the future. Things that are different:

New team, new offense

He missed games last year and is already dinged up this year.

Powell will take away catches. 

He might not be the GL guy.

He is old for a RB.

You know who else was an RB1 for forever then  went to the Jets?

Tomlinson 2010 age 31 - 219/914/6 and 52/368/0  in 15 games.  10.9 PPG

Pretty close to my projections for Forte.  Should be good enough for an RB2 in standard with RB1 upside if he gets more usage.

also, Tomlinsons PPG in 2009 was 11.5 and was on the way down by then.  Forte's last season was 13.1 and in line with his career average.

 
I think the most interesting aspect of the Forte/Powell combo is their nearly identical contracts. If Powell was just another guy, why would they pay him nearly the same as their big free agency pickup? I'm guessing a decent split between the two.

I think Forte can do that but I think that's about his ceiling this year.

Forte got underpaid due to his age. Powell got overpaid due to his age.

Imo.

 
Forte will be used almost identically to Ivory last year. 240 touches on the ground and plenty of catches to go with it.

Ivory had a 4.3 ypc average last year. Forte had a 4.1 ypc average last year.

Traded him for the #9 rookie pick, and was able to get Dixon with it.  Given what's going on in Baltimore, I'm not sure I did the right thing.

 
Powell was re-signed for a reason. He looked really good last year, and was pretty much the lead back in terms of production the last eight weeks of the year. Naysayers could not have been watching his avg. speed to the line compared to Ivory, his breaking of tackles, etc. 

I know this thread is about Forte, but the talk about Powell stinking have been dead wrong. He was excellent last year, and will continue to excel in the spread offense, health permitting. 

 
ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini believes the backfield touches will be "more balanced" than last season.
Chris Ivory averaged 16 attempts per game with Bilal Powell getting six last season. Cimini expects the workload to be split more evenly this year, with newcomer Matt Forte getting closer to 14 carries and Powell adding a couple extra a game. Cimini also thinks Powell will handle the third-down duties, which would seriously cut into Forte's PPR appeal. Despite his track record, Forte could end up more of an RB3 this season. Sep

Powell's taking on a bit of a Pierre Thomas quality to me, good player who could probably do much more if asked.

I just added Powell in a non-ppt league. I have a ton of faith that he'll get a big workload the first few weeks, though it's not enough to start him in shallow leagues. I agree with Eminence that Khiry Robinson is a wildcard factor, but he's not even third on the initial depth chart, IIRC. And other than scouting Khiry hasn't really proved much in the NFL to date.  

Also, Rich Cimini reports that the Jets expect to share the workload more evenly this season, about fourteen touches or so for Forte to Powell's ten or so.

Have had forte in my lineup all week and getting cold feet.  Against a good def without really knowing the usage thinking about sitting for djax

 
One thing also to remember is the Jets' relatively weak offensive line. It has Ryan Clady, Nick Mangold, Breno Giacomini, James Carpenter, and Brian Winters, good enough for a Pro Football Focus ranking of 24th in the league. There won't be many holes, he's going to have to make them.  

Not that I'm down on Forte (I personally had him on my team a bunch over the years and enjoyed watching him play with the Bears) it's just that there are things to consider.

Khiry's gone, waived/injured.

 
I do think Forte will share the load, but it's only beat writer opinions as to a reasonably even split. Really have to see how it goes tomorrow before passing judgment.

What Forte offers more than Powell, however, is the ability to run between the tackles - not Powell's, um, forte.

Both are obviously good pass catchers and good in pass pro, so we'll have to see how 3rd down duties are split.

Powell had 2.7 YAC during his rushing attempts to Forte's 2.2, according to Pro Football Focus. Of course, only real scouts and coaches can tell us this info., not me, but I thought he looked better at everything last year. Also, the Jets operate out of the gun and the spread a lot so that can freeze defenders and open up lanes for him. 

Just saying that I'm a believer in Powell. He was their lead back last year for the last eight games over a really good other runner. 

Forte is no chopped liver, though; and his fluidity of motion may prove me wildly wrong. I hope he does.

Bring in one of the league's premier receiving backs so he can cede 3rd down duties to a guy who is already on the roster. Makes sense.

 
I will say this, I think Forte is an upgrade over ivory.  In about every way.  Why bring him in to give him less reps than the lesser guy the season before.  Logic is kinda off there

So did drafting Hackenberg in the second round.  You have to wonder how much Woody Johnson interferes with his FO, because Maccagnan seems to know what he's doing.

Ivory was superior in almost every statistical category last year. He's just oft-injured and banged up as he searches for contact rather than avoiding it.

Best ability is availability.   Don't really care about numbers. The bears team forte has been playing on the past couple years has been fairly awful.  My eyes tell me forte is better than ivory.  

 
Matt Forte played 54-of-71 snaps Week 1 against the Bengals.
Bilal Powell, who was supposedly going to form a timeshare with Forte, played just 17 snaps and was out-touched 27-to-6. Forte is the clear No. 1 in New York, and he will be a borderline RB1 as long as he stays healthy. That might not be long if he continues to see 27 touches a game, but he is still a great play Thursday against the Bills.

I drafted him in the 5th... and then flipped him two days ago for Ingram. Man, I hope I don't regret that move by season's end.

My thought process there was with having CJA as my top RB, I wanted someone I could plug along side him and feel comfortable about. All of the talk about Powell splitting carries made my skittish. Fantasy football makes me nuts... but, I love it! Ha!

I was definitely concerned about the short week. But, it seems like the Jets are going to work Forte until the wheels come off (if they do).
