Matt Moore making a statement... (1 Viewer)

Matt Moore has been playing very well and is definitely making a run at being named the 2010 starter for Carolina. With a great running game and a true #1 receiver I think he can be successful given the opportunity. 7 TD's to 0 INT's the past three weeks @NE, vs MIN, and @NYG. Those are no slouches. Can any Panther homers or anybody else give some insight?

it wouldn't surprise me if he gets the job, but I still don't think he's the long term answer.

Wait until teams have more film on the kid and are able to find holes to exploit. Not saying he can't possibly be a quality NFL player, I just don't think he's been "exposed" enough to make a call on this yet.

Moore was almost flawless vs the Giants. Touch deep balls, bullets into small windows, patience on play action, nice throws on the move. Very, very impressed for 2nd straight week. Deserves at least honest camp battle. Looked good in 07 too.

I think he's at least earned the camp competition. If he can be what Delhomme was 3 or 4 years ago, a serviceable QB who can keep a safety high so Fox can run 40 times a game and play good defense.

Neither QB will be successful without another WR. Delhomme was successful in the past because of Muhammad, a reliable technician paired with a talented split end (Smith obviously).

I'm really hoping they draft Eric Decker.

Thanks for the imput Sig, what do you think Moore's ceiling is?

Moore was pretty highly touted at the beginning of his last year in college, but didn't get drafted. His ability to move around the pocket and find the open man down field has always been a part of his game that makes him a worthwhile prospect.

I think he'll need everything to go right for him to get a long-term starting gig in the next 2-3 seasons. More realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if the Panthers get rid of Delhomme and bring in another young QB like Troy Smith. If this happens in Carolina, I think he'll be no more than a fantasy QB2 for next year but what is really impressive about Moore is his poise. He doesn't throw the prettiest ball, but he sees the field pretty well for a young player and he's made few big mistakes in any of his starts, even as a rookie a couple of years ago.

He's worth a roster spot on a deeper dynasty squad. However, I would be cautious because his career smacks of something we might have seen from Jon Kitna in the sense that as he gets close to earning a true shot whatever organization he'll be with will bring in a blue chip prospect or another free agent with a higher price tag.

I believe the release of Jake Delhomme has all but guaranteed

the starting QB in 2010 to be Matt Moore.

He deserves his shot, and he should get it in 2010.

I like this kid a lot. He is a solid dynasty buy low during this off season, imo.

Agreed -- had picked him up in 3 leagues before Delhomme's official demise last year, but stupidly only ended up keeping him in one... :goodposting:

Matt Moore played very well his senior season, I enjoyed watching him play for the Beavers.

I am a bit surprised how smooth his transition to the NFL has been so far though. When he transferred to Oregon State I underestimated him, but when he became the starter for us he definitely proved me wrong. But the NFL is a different kind of league, I hope he can keep it up as the future starting QB for the Panthers. He definitely deserves to be watched closely.

None of this should surprise anyone after what Delhomme did the last couple of years and the way Moore finished the season last year...

What are everyone's thoughts on Moore's dynasty value for this year and beyond? Will he hold off Clausen or is he a stopgap? He looked extremely impressive at the end of last season.

Obviously Carolina sees him as a stopgap. So if Clausen (or even Pike, who made the 53-man roster) ever pan out, then Moore will be looking for another starting gig. And history has shown that it is very rare for a demoted starter to find another starting gig elsewhere.

He earned the starting gig with his stellar performance down the stretch last season. I will give him the benefit of the doubt this preseason. If he stumbles early,he may be replaced. I don't think he will stumble. I like him to hold the job and start this season where he left off last season.

I find this statement to be extremely untrue, especially in RECENT history.Just of the starting QBs this season:

The Aforementioned Delhomme in Cleveland

Donovan McNabb in Washington

Jason Campbell in Oakland

Brett Favre in Minnesota

Matt Cassell in Kansas City

Drew Brees in New Orleans

Derek Anderson in Arizona

Others from Past 3 seasons:

Brett Favre (Packers to Jets)

Chad Pennington (Jets to Dolphins)

Kerry Collins (How many places has this guy been the starter)

Jon Kitna (from Cincy to Detroit)

Uhhh. Favre retired and unretired a bunch, but was never benched.Cassell? Where did he start besides when Brady went down?

Brees was traded on fear of injury.

McNabb...eagles are just stupid, but again, never benched and still a premier talent.

This list is fail.

Uhh...The packers TRADED Favre to the Jets. If they honestly wanted him as the starter, he would have been.Cassell started the entire season, and had a near pro-bowl season. And then was demoted again when Brady came back?Brees was demoted in favor of Rivers. They were concerned enough with his shoulder to not offer him the deal he wanted, so he left, was not traded.McNabb was traded...what more sign of a demotion from the starting position do you need? They obviously liked Kolb better for their team...

I would have preferred to see Matt Moore come out and tear it up in the preseason but he also did not have Steve Smith to throw to so while I am concerned I'm not hitting the panic button yet.

Yeah, I was thinking of starters who were actually demoted (usually in mid-season). Both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson fit the bill (and I think Anderson only got a new starting gig because Leinart was a primadonna). JaMarcus Russell, Kyle Boller, J.P. Losman, David Carr, Tyler Thigpen, etc.

Plus Steve Smith is SOLIDLY behind this guy, says he will be great. I don't recall Smith making the same kinds of glowing comments about previous quarterbacks (save delhomme and collins when they were great) Having the support of Smith is reason enough to think there might be something there. I also seem to recall Smith even complaining about some of the scrubs before, maybe I am not recalling. Someone else prolly knows more.

SleeperScope: Moore To Like at QB in Carolina NowBy Matt SchaufRapidDraft.comSince last we met here, games have actually started (well, kinda) and the injuries have begun to pile up (and that’s just in Denver). As the August weeks roll on, we should start to get a clearer picture of who will win the disputed starting jobs, who’s on the rise and who might be just a bit overrated.Seeing more of all of these players will also lead folks to wake up to some of the sleepers out there and raise the average draft positions of the more popular breakout picks. That’s all the more reason to jump on potential values now.QB: Matt Moore, PanthersI suppose “skepticism” is the best way to describe the general reaction to Moore taking over the Carolina starting job, a reaction that makes absolutely no sense to me.It was possible to think Jake Delhomme’s 2008 playoff meltdown against Arizona was an aberration. Last season showed, however, that it most certainly was not. When his coaches finally conceded that Moore was the better option, the team scored 5.1 more points per game over his five season-ending starts than in 11 games with Delhomme. Moore was also 6.1 percentage points better in completion rate and averaged 1.3 yards more per attempt (7.6 to 6.3, the difference between 24th place and 12th among 2009 passers). Moore threw touchdown passes twice as often (per attempt) as Delhomme and was intercepted at a quarter of the veteran’s rate. He was even sacked less frequently and blew Delhomme away so completely in passer rating that it’s not worth comparing.Because Steve Smith was really the only noteworthy Panthers receiver last year, let’s look to his numbers for more indicators. In just less than four games with Moore (Smith broke an arm in their fourth start together last season), Smith averaged 0.6 more receptions per game and 6.8 yards per catch more than in Delhomme’s 11 outings, and Smith’s touchdown-per-game rate doubled.Through eight NFL starts (including three from 2007 as an undrafted rookie), Moore has posted numbers that project to 3,108 yards, 22 touchdowns and six picks over a full season in just 410 attempts (fewer than the Panthers tallied each of the past two years). All of these numbers ignore specific matchups, but they would also look terrific for any quarterback through his first eight pro starts.Smith will have to come back from another broken arm but seems on track for Week 1, and we know better than to doubt his readiness once he’s on the field. Rookie Jimmy Clausen is battling for a job in camp, as many expected, but it’s for the backup spot. Moore is an absolute steal as a fantasy backup right now, going 26th among quarterbacks at RapidDraft.com.Matt Schauf is the senior football writer for RapidDraft.com.Del.icio.us | Digg it | Athlon Sports RSS Feeds

I mean Moore is NOT a sexy pick. But with a strong running game and a good defense I could see him being a very safe play as a qb2 who has the potential in that offense to put up qb 1 #s. I mean S Smith's YAC's count as much as the YBC's last I checked.
