Matt Ryan - QB ATL (1 Viewer)

What is everyone's thoughts on Ryan from here forward. He looked very good against Chicago this weekend. He actually has looked pretty solid at home so far. Is he a startable QB from here on out? Or just a bye week or injury filler?

Bye week filler, you said it.

Sure, he'll have a couple more games like this week, but many more along the lines of: 10 for 16, 144 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.

He does have some sweet and semi-sweet matchups...

Week 9 @ Oak

Week 10 v. NO

Week 11 v. Den

Week 13 @ SD

Week 14 @ NO

Should be useful as part of a 3 headed-monster at QB with the likes of JTO, Orton, etc.

Do you think he is in the Edwards / maybe Garrard tier?
IMO, it's too late in the season to think in terms of tiers. If you don't own Brees, Cutler, Peyton, Rodgers, Warner, Rivers or McNabb, then you should have an amendable plan in place for every QB start of the season going forward to maximize the value of matchups. Like Garrard and Edwards, Ryan is startable under the right circumstances, so yes, he belongs to that "tier."

I agree. I guess I was looking for his comparable value. For instance if you lost Romo or Hasselbeck and had to ride one for the rest of the year, etc. (I know Romo is not out for the rest of the year, not sure how long Hass is out)

How does he compare to Schaub over the next few years?

I have Schaub and am contemplating a trade involving those two.

He just had a decent game against CHI, which does not have a great pass DEF, but is not a pushover.I don't think he's a bad start, esp that he will just keep getting better.

That was an awesome ending yesterday. You have to root for the kid after what the Falcons had to deal with last season.

I'm a believer. I think he's the best thing since Peyton Manning. Fantastic QB, a true leader. Great for ATL and their franchise after all the crap they had to deal with for Vick's entire career (coach after coach, now jail)

I've watched every one of Ryan's games. Observations:

1) Most poised rookie QB to come into the NFL that I can remember (including Manning). Coaching staff is already giving him the hurry-up offense to execute and he appears to have audibiling leeway.

2) As much as the Falcons O-Line has improved (they've only given up 7 sacks in 6 games), Ryan's pocket awareness has alot to do with the improvement in this area. Again, for a rookie to be able to slide and move subtlely around the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield and finding his targets...again, extremely impressive.

3) He has developed a very real chemistry with Roddy White who has also raised his game a notch. Ryan already throws the ball to the spot where the receiver is supposed to be. His command of the offense is already top tier.

4) Obviously yesterday was his "wow" game...the game where he clearly showed he could put the team on his shoulders. Up until now, he had been at best a complimentary part of the gameplan...but mostly secondary. Now can he do this week after week. That now is the question that noone yet knows the answer to, but I have the sense that since the Falcons now know he can do this, they won't be at all reluctant to have pass heavy gameplans if the match-up calls for it. But at the end of the day, the Falcons will prefer to run the ball.

:football: I said before the season started that he kind of reminds me of Tom Brady, and i am still suprised with how well he is playing.

I actually am trying to acquire either Ryan, Garrard, or Edwards. I have seen more of Garrard, and even some Edwards, but last night was the first time I had seen Ryan. I just wanted to get a feel for what he really is. Thanks for the input. (Still not sure which direction I will go yet.)

Easy decision in a dynasty league, and i am a Bills fan and love Edwards, but Ryan is the way to go.

I'm also very impressed, especially in terms of being a NFL QB as opposed to fantasy production. That said, no one thinks he'll hit a rough spot now that teams are getting a nice amount of film on him and his tendencies?

Probably a bit, but Ryan is learning as he goes as well, i would say advantage Ryan.

Agreed. One thing I did not point out above, but is also very true is that Ryan assimilates information extremely quickly. The best comparison I can make is this. Some people have an affinity for foriegn languages. Immerse them in French and put them in Paris and they'll learn to communicate quickly and build on that. For others, this is an extremely difficult thing to do. Ryan seems to be this way with football so his rate of comprehension is extraordinary. Is this to say he won't have bad games? No, he probably will. But I've seen enough of him to believe he'll be playing QB in the NFL for a long time.

No doubt he will have bad games, but a player usually learns more from mistakes than they do from succeeding, especially a QB like Ryan.
