Fat Larry's is my go-to these days. It's located in a old converted house on Summer Avenue near Arlington. Their muddy ribs and brisket are tops in town, and unlike the Rendezvous, lunch is the best time to show up. If I could have only one BBQ plate in the city, though, it would be Cozy's ribs.

I am counting on it GB! Boarding at PBI. Tipsy is just outside Memphis. He's hitting interstate BBQ, Corky's, and Germantown commissary on the way in then meeting me at my place to offload the oysters and jambalaya supplies, then headed downtown to drop the Lang, then hitting rendezvous and then cozy corner downtown, followed possibly by Memphis BBQ company time/appetitie permitting. First snafu: load in trucker smashed into our water pump/plumbing so we need to repair that. Electrical was not delivered in the form promised but or electricians got it sorted out so we have juice as of 30 mins ago. Ready to land and get this show on the road....
I'd just need to know you're stopping by. I'll be bartending Friday from 8-??? so that's an especially good time to say hi. Our location is different this year so not sure how to describe, but again it's R-096 and the team name is Born in the Que S A.
Should mention (belatedly) that anyone is welcome to visit our tent at R-096. It's on the walkway side without the sweet location of icon, and only one story, but in terms of actual cooking chops and fun times it's quite high on the list.

We came in 14th in ribs. For those like me who think 14th sounds bad in any context, this is like saying you're the 14th best player in the NBA or NFL or somesuch. In the biggest BBQ competition in the world, being 14th in the most competitive division is an incredible result. Yowza, I'm amazed.

It's in Horn Lake about 20 minutes from downtown Memphis. Can't go soon as the hype will probably be insane, but after a couple of months we'll have to check it out.

Yeah, notsomuch about me but I appreciate your kindness. It was great to see you! Next year we need to make sure [icon] stops by as well.Just made it back home. I grossly underestimated the complete AWESOMENESS of what I was getting into. What a great week. Ill have more to discuss later...but i gotta play w my boys, get a shower, and pass the heck out.
Quick Notes:
Try to sleep next year. 1 hour for a 36 hour stretch was pretty dumb.
Don't accept a drink at every tent you visit during the overnight hours....Fireball Whiskey, Jager, beer, jello shots, and god knows what else DO NOT MIX WELL. Amazingly I still got pit fired & food going for competition that morning without even throwing up.
And Krista4...no fair being such a hottie when my wife is 400 miles away
Mad, mad, mad props to ICON for getting me to come up, house me, and let me eyeball his lady friend all week.
27th. The 1st judge we had came back to let us know how we did with him and let us know then the team next on his list got 1 more point in their overall than us from him. He was the only judge I was worried about...the other two walked out kinda giddy. Said team that got one more point ended up in 2nd place i think...so put us in another grouping and we coulda..shoulda...woulda.... Still, 27th is in the top 15% ...which puts yall in the top 5%.
Did yall get any judge feedback? And how on earth did yall score that awesome spot for your tent. I want trees next year!!!Icon mentioned going to see yall a few times....not sure if you noticed the goings on in our tent ( you stopped by after our trophy win but i was a little distracted and am not totally sure of anything in that 3 hour period of jello shots and apple pie moonshine)...but that boy can host a banging party....made me feel almost young again Alas...I think it made him a little crazy trying to make everything perfect...which it was. He was stoked we at least got to meet.I stopped by this morning on my walk out ...but no K4. Just wanted to say bye and thanks for the food love!....did you notice what came in 1st for seafood? (i gave you one that was reportedly better by a mile...might have to enter that next year )

We're already talking about ways to improve next year. Next year we're going to have labor to bring in everything and to carry everything out.Several sponsors are looking to increase funding:- Methodist Hospital is coming aboard as a sponsor. - Tipsy is talking about trying to bring aboard Zatarains- One of our main sponsors signed a ton of business during their private dinners and wants to up their contribution for 2013. - Another smaller sponsor (rich kid from VA Beach) who contributed $1000 last year wants to increase his donation substantially.- Scaffolding company (paid $3000) is talking about doing it bigger and better next year and maybe free to use it as a sales tool. - A major event producer (has brought in acts like Sasha & Digweed and Paul Oakenfold) wants in. Has said he's got a huge checkbook. We're talking about moving UP from a 24x50 spot to a 50x50 spot which would free up all sorts of space. I would personally like to see a budget of $30-40k next year. This would allow me all sorts of flexibility to really do this up right. Hire labor for load in and load out. Hire smoking hot bartenders instead of us having to work shifts. Less work, more fun. I'd like to work on getting Tipsy more involved in the turn ins.... ideally giving him at least 1 or 2 of his own categories to spearhead and earn credit for. Our guys wanted to turn in the same grits that earned us 2nd last year in seafood (understandably) but it was a poor batch. Oysters Rockerfeller took first and Tipsy had cranked out a STELLAR batch of those on Wednesday that would have surely earned him a walk (top 3 finish). There are tons of irons in the fire already. My goal is to not too involved in the planning for another 5-6 months....
