MIA @ SD MAY BE POSTPONED (1 Viewer)

I don't know if any of you know that most of SD county is on fire. Whole communities are being leveled and hundreds of families are being evecuated, many to Qualcomm Stadium. Over 100,000 acres and a couple hundred homes have already burned and there is no relief in sight due to gusting Santa Ana winds. As I type this the word in SD is the Chargers are considering postponing the Monday Night game. I will keep you all posted as the info becomes available but as of right now I am betting that the game will not go as scheduled.

Trying not to be insulting, but it's not hard to check news sites (MSN.com and CNN.com come to mind) to verify a story like this.Would you like me to link you to one of those sites?

Is there any precedent for postponing a game? Wouldn't the NFL just try to relocate the game, possibly making it a Fins a home game?

Perhaps there are more important things you should be attending to then posting on an football internet message board.Best of luck to you and yours and stay safe.
I am packed and ready to go but will not leave until I am forced to....What do you think I have been doing all day? First concern was my Dad who was near where the fire started, then friends in affected areas. Crazy sh|t here, when I look down my street and see the whole mountain on fire and smoke for miles.

Here is another link. It lists Qualcomm as an evac site. Hey, the Chargers and Dolphins can come to Sun Devil Stadium. It would be the first real NFL football game we've seen all year! :bag:

San Diego Union Tribune Link

On a serious note, this has me concerned. My Dad lives in Escondido. I guess I better call to make sure he's safe!

Just talked to some friends in Escondido. They are safe, but it is a mess (there may be more smoke and ash at my house along the ocean). The stadium is in no danger. But it is an evacuation center, and might not be useable tomorrow. As I understand it, there are 4 major fires in San Diego ... working south:1) Escondido Valley Center (well north of San Diego).2) The Ramona fire.3) Miramar fire (and Scripps Ranch). This is the "top gun" air base of Tom Cruise fame. This has closed the 15 freeway. Probably the closest to the stadium, but will not threaten the stadium.4) The Chula Vista fire (south San Diego)

I live in the middle of downtown SD, and it has been weird here today. The sky is orange, it smells like a campfire and some ash has come in the windows. No football on TV obviously, since this is a bit of a bigger story than the Denver-Balt game. I took a few pics out my window if any wants to check 'em out.

I guess there are already people evacuating to Qualcomm, since so many of the freeways are shutdown and there really isn't anywhere to go.

Best of luck to all of you guys who are affected by the fires, and be sure to stay safe. Just remember that your life is more important than your belongings.

Just got back from PB bar and grill...ESPN radio 800 just mentioned that Oak and SF were possible locations for the game if it is posponded. The reports on the local news dont look encouraging......over 100 thou acres are burned and the Q is full of evacuated residents.Edit: best of luck to all affected....residents, not LT2 and Ricky owners....kind of strange for a game in SD to be canceled.

Wasn't there a Dolphins game postponed when Hurricane Andrew was around?I seem to remember they replayed the game a few weeks down the line (when both teams had the same bye, maybe?).Good luck everyone out there. But I'm wondering how the NFL would deal with it.

If they are going to move the game (say to ARI, OAK, SF), they had better decide soon or Madden won't make it! LA is on fire too, so the coliseum is probably out. Both teams have already had their BYE weeks, so that won't work this time.

Without a common bye, they'd have to cancel the game. I don't see how they could make it work otherwise.
There is way too much $$ on the line for this game to be canceled. ABC would move everyone in the stadium a hotel room and provide bus shuttles before they would go a week with MNF.... I know that is sad to say but more often then not $$ rules.

wow those pics are very spooky! Thanks for sharing

Last time the Chargers were on MNF there were major SD fires too. Just an interesting tidbit. The fires are moving south I am told (Mom is in north County) which is trouble, but they are still far from the stadium. All the best luck for those in SD.

They just said on ESPN that the NFL is considering moving "Monday" night football to another city... They listed Pheonix among others..

Take any GOOD pics?.... Ansel Adams you ain't. ;)

If they're evacuating to Qualcomm, what's the problem? The game would be played before a full stadium! :)The Cardinals should be so lucky...

Per SD news reports that I've heard on TV today, while a bunch of people have been evacuated to Qualcomm, they are NOT allowing anybody on the field (as they normally would) expressly due to the fact that they are preparing the field for the Monday night game. They are only allowing people in the parking lot and in the stands. While this obviously doesn't mean anything for certain, it does indicate that the game will go on -- at least as of now.

They just said on ESPN that the NFL is considering moving "Monday" night football to another city... They listed Pheonix among others..
Good luck making it to the game if you have tickets. I wonder why they can't move it to LA? That might be within range for most ticket holders. Are they using the Coliseum for evacuations as well?

Sportscenter just reported that they are looking to relocate the game to Phoenix or Northern California. I know its been mentioned already, just wanted to give another source.

Flights from Phoenix to SD are pretty much all cancelled for the time being. Even Phx-LAX are SOL.News is reporting one of the fires was started by a lost hunter. Stupid idiot.

Chargers Cancel Practice, Game in Question

By SD Bolt Report

Date: Oct 26, 2003

Updated 4:45 PDT: The San Diego Chargers cancelled their pre-game practice on Saturday with fires touching all parts of the County. Qualcomm Stadium has been setup as an evacuation point and it is estimated 2,500 people have arrived as of the 4:45 hour and the number is increasing exponentially. The game tomorrow between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins set for Monday Night and Prime Time is definitely in question. For those with knowledge of the area...

It has just been reported that winds have died down and wind shifts are not expected. That is the first piece of good news on the day.

There has been an evacuation announcement for the Kearney Mesa area. It is not known if it is a mandatory evacuation right now. The fire has moved to Convoy St, north of 52, in a move by the fire department to stop the fire from spreading.

The Red Cross has now setup camp at Qualcomm and is doling out food and water to anyone who comes by. Shelters will be set up as needed and the Red Cross will direct it as night falls.

Ten deaths have been reported from the fire and the only freeway that has remained open is "the 5" a north south highway that connects LA to San Diego. Flights have been delayed up to 12 hours from Lindbergh Field.

While no release has been made concerning the game, it would not be a surprise to see this game postponed until Tuesday, suspended, moved or even cancelled.

There is talk that the NFL has looked into moving the game to another city, but airport delays have made that near impossible.

Fires are wreaking havoc on the area and the sky is a strange hue of orange. Ash has touched down as far as 30 miles away from the edges of the fire and the health risks to all are a concern. A state of emergency has been activated for Southern California and Qualcomm Stadium is closer than ten miles away from the fires at this time.

Sizeable embers are being picked up by the strong winds and thrown to other previous safe areas.

SD Bolt Report’s main concern is the health and safety of everyone in the path of this catastrophe. The game becomes secondary.

Hell, the Chargers should be so lucky.

I think those are great pix, good luck to all in the San Diego area. What kind of camera did you use for those pix?

An area less than 3 miles due east (Mission George/Allied Gardens) of the Q is being evacuated. ( Fiars Road turns into Mission Gorge) This game will NOT be played at the Q IMO. NBC just reported the game is in jeopardy and will more than likely be relocated . More to come.....

Never said I was. :P Considering I am 20 miles away, and was hanging outside my 4th floor window, I think I did OK. I could have gone up on the roof, but it smells like an ashtray outside. :yucky: elshagon, just a 2 MP Kodak digital.

The Q is in no danger of burining down but the air quality is so bad even on the coast that I don't think there is any way they could play the game.If the game is moved, what do they do about tickets for the game? I'm sure they'll refund SD fans but how are they going to sell out a game in 24 hours?

With all the Fires in San Bernardino too they might be. I bet they would go to Anaheim first but you never know.

I'm assuming the Edison. Can they convert that into a football field this quickly? In actuality, can the players leave the SD area to go to Phoenix, LA, Bay Area this quickly? And where are the Dolphins right now? SD? Miami? Thought they were supposed to fly out this afternoon.

Just giving you a hard time. :D The pics are fine.

What would people do that hae tickets? The seats would not be the same as the seats in Q. Plus there would be no concessions or anything. Would the stadium be empty?

San Diego mayor just told the media he is requesting to cancel the game and expects the NFL to comply.

Guys, how do you see your fantasy leagues handling this. Will all of this week's games be wiped out if the game is cancelled?

I just heard the same thing. If the game is moved to another city, there's no way SD fans will be there? The stadium would be empty unless they made it a free event. How does ABC get it's equipment there and how does Madden get there. All E-W freeways in SD are closed and the 5 is a parking lot with people trying to get north. It's at least an 8-9 hour drive to SF with little to no traffic and at least 6 to Phoenix.
