So apparently LaMont Jordan got a $25 million contract with $5 million up front -- 2 years ago.And everyone is arguing that Turner will get a bigger contract in a year when he's an UFA. He might but I'd put that ($25 million) as the over/under as UFA next year.If I were SD I think it would be worth it (both as back-up insurance and as successor to LT) to offer him Taylor-type money now ($14-15 million). Maybe it wouldn't be attractive, but maybe it would?I made the Taylor comparison a week or so ago in another thread and I think it's a good benchmark contract he might get as a RFA. Betts got good backup money, not starter money. I believe Turner will get a better contract than Taylor if he hits UFA since he will have many more suitors than Chester did and is a better RB. I'm sure the Chargers would definitely offer him Betts money but there's no reason why Turner would accept it since he'll make at least twice that AND be a starter for a host of other teams. I don't know who Turner's agent is but I'm sure he realizes the value that his client has and he's not gonna re-sign with SD. Although I'm sure SD would love to have him, it's not gonna happen.Betts just got a 5-year, $11 million contract to stay as a back-up RB in Washington with a $3.5 million signing bonus and a $2 million roster bonus in 2007.Last year, Minnesota gave Chester Taylor a 4-year, $14.1 million contract with $5.6 million guaranteed. Do you think Turner would get a comparable offer from another team if he was traded or in another year as UFA? What could he command? Would SD be willing to pay him that next summer (or more like Betts)? Off the top of my head, I would think it would be worth it to the Chargers to keep a solid guy like Turner who knows the system with the team for the long-term.Maurile Tremblay said:stbugs covered it, but there's no such thing as matching an offer anymore. There's no way the Chargers could match a zillion dollar bonus if Turner plays more than half of his home games in San Diego county.David Yudkin said:Remember, the Chargers get a chance to match an offer even if a team wanted to give them a 1st and a 3rd rounder.

Kidnets and Yudkin, I won't bore everyone by re quoting those long replies. I stand corrected on the date of the pick. This statment does focus what I as getting at. If you ccccould get a #2 for a backup when Edge and SA were out there for a 1st and no one bit. Take the pick and run. Teams are de valuing RBs at this point, if thats the case get max value.
I'm not sure where the Jordan lovefest stems from. He's a starter, but in the lower strata of NFL RBs by far, and I don't think Turner is the only backup that is more talented than Jordan.
I'm not so sure Turner isn't better than Peterson anyway.
