Microsoft Announces "Surface" Tablet (1 Viewer)

I'm old or somethingnone of these new tablets (android, ipad, ms) do anything for me. Same as the phones at this point, none of these announcements make me care.:getoffmylawn:perhaps technology has passed me by.Not good for a software developer :bag:
No, you're right. Tablets suck. I can't get into them at all. I just want a smartphone and a laptop.
Count me in this group. Tablets, schmablets. They dont interest me in the least.

Nintendo Wii >>> MS Kinect
You played either of these gaming systems?
Yes. Microsoft jumped on motion gaming bandwagon after Wii created the market.(I didn't mean the ">>>" to say better than. Each example shows Microsoft again being late to market.)
I think going from hand controllers to full body interface is pretty innovative. The PS3 version, forget what it is called, is the knock off of Wii not the Kinect.
Both were developed and sent to market better than the Wii

You're not missing anything. The video contained no information. Just cheesy music and artsy shots of Buckyballs or parts from ball bearings or something.
I didn't realize there was a video until you mentioned it. Doesn't play in Chrome. I had to dust of IE and look at it from there.
I played it in Chrome, but I didn't realize it was there until Leeroy Jenkins mentioned it. It takes a while to load, and then the "play" button shows up eventually.
:kicksrock: don't have admin privileges on my work PC so I can't upgrade silverlight to watch... can't someone upload this to youtube?

I don't have time to keep up with this, but did these guys basically just release a WOW OMG tablet? It's like in Austin Powers when Dr. Evil just woke from a 50 year slumber and had all these great ideas.

Seems like a good thing.

"priced on par with ulrabooks"Uh oh :lmao:
If this isn't $399/499/599 its toast.
64GB iPad is priced at 699/829 - that actual quote was for the 64/128 version, the other versions would be priced comparable to other ARM based tablets.
Surface for WIndows RT coming in 32GB and 64GB models. Priced "like comparable tablets based on ARM."
Pro coming in 64GB and 128GB models, will be priced on par with Ultrabook-class PCs.

The keyboard is kinda cool I guess. I mean, it's not much different than the keyboards you can get for iPad, but I like how thing it is and the way it connects.

Goon. I love you and your apple insight and info.. But you don't always need to be so pro-apple and a Debbie downer. I say this as I type on my new iPad. New good and innovative products and tech are awesome no matter whose sticker or etching is on it.
Not trying to be a downer. I already stated that I'm pulling for Microsoft and give them credit for going in a distinctive direction with Metro. But at the same time they got caught asleep at the wheel and fell way behind in mobile and tablets. And really, you guys would be going nuts if Apple announced a picture frame stand, a stylus and a keyboard as their main product innovations on a new iPad. I would never hear the end of it.ETA: Seriously, how many times did they pimp that folding stand? "Only .7 mm thick. Thinner than a credit card! It has three hinges!" Good lord, I'm surprised they didn't call it "magical". :lmao:

1 thing you gotta laugh at this though is you know there was a meeting at MSFT that went something like this:

"We need a tablet, what features should it have"?

"Keyboard"

"USB"

"Run Windows"

"Smaller than iPad"

Even so they did a pretty good job with it IMO.

Everything is a knock off of science fiction anyway. This "we did it first" is silly.

You've kinda earned that right though. You and icon both have the same tone in every thread. It's old and played out. Just cut the #### and let them release their toy. You should be flattered that they're doing everything they can to copy Apple. at your ETA. You just can't help yourself.

Disclosure: iPhone and iPad owner - big fan

Sorta like when Apple came to market with a mobile phone.

no offense to anyone but I'm not digging Win 8 at all. I warmed up to 7 eventually but 8 - not feeling it.XP is still the best
Win 7 is the best OS but I use the Windows 7 Basic theme, which is almost the same as Windows Classic.

Honestly, I do like where Microsoft is going here. Not exactly groundbreaking, but I do think they are being smart in their approach in a lot of ways. It'll be fun to see where it goes.

It's who they are. Do we have MSFT counterparts to icon and goon?

I don't watch announcements because they are almost always ridiculous, regardless of the manufacturer. The truth is that this is the most innovative tablet on the market right now, even despite being 'asleep at the wheel'. Don't worry though - I'm sure Apple will copy the design soon enough for the new new iPad 2.

Umm... It's not "on the market right now". It does look like solid, but you might want to at least wait for it to be released before you crown it the new king.

GAME CHANGER!!!!The death of iPad is imminent.
Death, no, but an increasing number of people are realizing that the iPad isn't the only tablet on the block.
HATER!!!!Down goes Apple. Down goes Apple.
he's just the official asus fanboy here at fbg , I'm shocked he isn't knocking this while trying to prop up the failed prime
Failed? Isn't it a top 5 device? It's one we have for mobile testing along with the samsung and iPad.

Sales figures for the Transformer Prime were released in the court decision, stating that the company had delivered --as of Feb. 24 -- only 2,000 preorders, and another 80,000 units to retailers worldwide.  If those figures sound bad, it's because they are. (Granted, this was a month ago, but it seems unlikely things have changed substantially.)
from an article written in the 1st week of apriland considering the Fire has 54% of the android market I'd say its failed

The only thing I'm a fanboy of is good hardware.

It's the best tablet currently for sale but there's no question that it's a failure in terms of sales.

The MS vs Apple discussions today sound eerily like popular tech literature back in the 90s, only it was IBM vs MS (Big Iron is dead! ... thousands of servers, everywhere. What's not to like?).

I don't own an iPad yet, but do have the iPhone and Macbook air. Can someone breakdown why I should buy this over the iPad?
Do you have any use for a keyboard, Windows apps, USB or flash sites?

There's still some important pieces of missing info namely price and battery life. If you didn't have the air, it might make more sense as surface seems to be a combination of a tablet and ultrabook.
