I remember architecture professors of mine 20 years ago saying this is how things would be some day in the construction industry, and I thought- yeah, I'll take my flying car to get the construction site too. crazy to think of the applications with this- real game-changer if this is as close to the consumer market as it sounds.

I hate Microsoft.

But I'm most likely in for this thing. At least until someone else builds one better.

cool video. does VR still cause motion sickness or have they figured that out yet?
This isn't VR, its AR. Its overlayed on reality, in a fixed position usually. Also, its not a display, but rather light is beamed directly into your eyes. VR like the Occulus Rift uses LED panels.

It shouldn't cause motion sickness.

And VR supposedly won't once they get to a higher resolution... supposedly about double what 4k is.

First thing I thought when I saw this was that the software will have to catch up- which might be a deal breaker in getting this up and running.

Latest reports have been pretty glowing though... and here's a bit about them buying Minecraft, specifically for this application:

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the firm’s in-development HoloLens augmented reality headset was a key reason behind buying Minecraft.

Redmond handed over a whopping $2.5 billion last year to take control of the block-building game and its developer Mojang.

“Let’s have a game that, in fact, will fundamentally help us change new categories,” Nadella told the New York Times in an interview.

“HoloLens was very much in the works then, and we knew it.”

Microsoft has yet to show off any real games for the platform yet, but seeing the HoloLens version of Minecraft will sure raise excitement in the community.

Microsoft debuted the latest version of the head-mounted HoloLens technology at Build 2015 this week, blowing the minds of many industry figures in the process.

Rather than throwing users into a VR world like the Oculus List, the self-contained reality headset projects images on top of real life objects.

This week Microsoft unveiled the Windows Holographic Platform, which allows users to create a home hub, placing Windows universal apps wherever they want them. If users are rocking a Windows 10 app like Skype on HoloLens, they’ll be able to say “Follow Me” to get the content to follow them around the room.

There’s no news on the price or release date for the HoloLens yet, but the NYT quoted one Microsoft executive who claimed it would cost “significantly more” than a games console like the Xbox One.

There have been recent hints that a developer version is on the way, but a consumer launch is through to be long on the horizon.

It looks awesome. Thinking of all the things it could potentially replace, like most screens, is pretty amazing without even considering the gaming or potential for overlays on ordinary things. Then the commercial aspects for 3D modeling, it's pretty astonishing if it works as advertised.

Thay youtube video from yesterday is just craaazy. I hope this is a 2015/16 product, and not 2020.
