Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (9 Viewers)

This is a tough playlist to listen to - there's some real harsh breaks and the music styles are all over the place. The "themes" are likely way better served with individual playlists.

There are some great songs in there - but it's just a bit jarring at times.
I was thinking the same about 1/2 way through the playlist as well, but that is just the nature of this format. The bolded would be true for a lot of playlists, but some are going to be just as unpredictable. I have rap, reggae, folk, punk, metal and foreign prog on mine. There is 0 flow or predictability here.

When I was listening I thought maybe I would shuffle these to help break up some of the spots but when I looked at the categories I realized some would be like mine. The stretch I thought was weird and jarring was Mr. Tambourine Man ---> XTC. Of that stretch, only afrobeats is going to have a mildly predictable genre or sound to it.

Theme: 31 Best Albums of 1984

31. Girl Gone Bad by Van Halen

Album: 1984 Released: Jan 9

Fitting that the first song on my 1984 themed playlist is from an album literally titled 1984. I am not a massive VH fan, it's just not the type of music I gravitate to often anymore. However, 1984 is a classic rock staple for good reason. The big hits on it hit really hard and will make almost anyone jump up and rock out. I am sure everyone here is already quite familiar with Panama, Hot for Teacher, Jump, etc. but I think Girls Gone Bad is every bit the banger that those are with some sick guitar work from Eddie.

I had a similar thought about Nickelback, and liked the song. Of course given my history with them and their rep, I also asked how much that had to do with the weirdness of the previous 6-7 songs.

Wheres the Umlauts here?
I will be explaining this for every selection, although it's obvious for some. For some of these songs, it's very obscure.

Is there a reason why you picked a recording by those noted Wagner interpreters the Cincinnati Pops? Or was that KP's doing?
:lmao:

I mean the Münchner Philharmoniker and the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln are on Spotify

Pretty sure this was the first album I ever purchased (although the first album I ever owned was Pyromania, got it as an award in some school fundraising thing). When I saw your category this was obviously the first album that jumped to mind.

And who was their recording team? I picked Kunzel because of Telarc. Stuff like Deutsche Grammophon just won't cut it.

Random Thoughts:

  • I am going to be :headbang: to most of this list I am sure, but Time really hit that nostalgia button for me as well. I did a mild list in my head of what 15-20 metal artists and/or albums would have been key for me in this era and I had thought of State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time. SoE was one of my first true "metal" cassettes that I possessed, and it was because I stole in and Master of Puppets out of my sister's boyfriend's car.
  • I already posted about the weird stretch and the Clapton tune.
  • I too was confused by The Toadies song.
  • The doubling up of Frank tunes was a funny surprise.

Album or Arist added to the listening queue:

  • Others have posted the same, but I also loved the Courteeners song.
  • 80s got me to add 1984. I forget how good that album is and how much I loved it back in the day. Girl Gone Bad was a favorite, and I remember arguing with a friend because I thought side 2 > Side 1.
  • King Gizzard is so out there and so unpredictable, I have crossed them off my research pile for a playlist. I liked this tune, so I added Omnium Gatherum to the list.
  • The Psychedelic Furs have been on my short list for a bit, so I bumped them up more based on No Easy Street reminding me yet again how much I like their sound.

Random movie/tv tie-ins:
  • I liked the song and knew I heard it before, but now I know what song Lisa P is dancing to in Adventureland and what the artist is! (Let The Music Play)
  • Charlie don't surf!! (Ride of the Valkyries)
  • A cover I love, and of course I know what song Buffy and Angel danced to at prom. I was going to link the scene, but I know I'd cry. (Wild Horses)

A few thoughts on the first playlist:

- I didn't know "Rhythm of the Rain" by title but recognized it when listening. Good song, and the thunder was a great way to start the playlist!
- I also liked the start of "The Silver Ghost" as well as the rest of it. Made my new-to-me favorites playlist.
- @jwb , it seems like both "Possum Kingdom" and "When Your Dream of long song title" would sound especially good on a great sound system. Please report back on this (we have one but I listen to these on my headphones - I'll listen to your playlist in full on the good stereo after we're done).
- ditkaburgers led us to a really fun song as usual with "Where Do You Go."
- The Nickelback song was not nearly as bad as I'd been led to believe they would be.
- MrsKP had a strong rookie showing with "Wild Horses."
- "Not Nineteen Forever," "Magenta Mountain" and especially "Auto Rock" (breathtaking!) rounded out my new-to-me favorites.

There were several on this list that really sounded good. "When Your Dream" especially stood out - the sound is coming from all over the place (lots of percussion and keyboards are usually pretty good). Possum was nice and clear and big sounding, but fairly straightforward too. Sirius deserves a mention - almost anything by APP is really well produced.

And who was their recording team? I picked Kunzel because of Telarc. Stuff like Deutsche Grammophon just won't cut it.

Interesting. Record label isn't something I usually consider when selecting which version of classical music to listen to.

Are there any other labels that stand out for you (or any of you other audiophiles)?

Luckily for the mrs, since she started this off with reggae and a cover in her first 6 songs! ;)

I am listening to Sticky Fingers now, and I love both songs. Much of my love for the cover is also the Buffy tie-in, since that's my favorite show. @MrsKarmaPolice - might be time for another rewatch...
Bumped to the top of the research pile: The Rolling Stones
That's a lot of work. Let Doc Oc be your guide.

Ride has always disappointed me in an audiophile sense (especially with that Maxell commercial I posted being iconic). The one posted here is one of the better sounding ones I've heard, but I've still never heard a version that really fills up the space like I want that fantastic piece of music to.

GTA #31 - Aneka - Japanese Boy (Flash FM, Vice City)

List is going to start off strong, with the first six being a bunch of the second best from across the series. The actual real life hit was a bit of a one hit wonder, and to the best of my knowledge didn't really generate any interest in the US, but was the second best of Flash, Vice City's pop/rock station, hosted by Toni - also the host of Flashback in GTA 3, allowing for plenty of comedic references between the two games, saying in VC by the time she's 30 she'll be doing something really important (whereas fifteen in game years later she is still a radio DJ) and not recalling in III the incident where in the Vice City era she had an unfortunate Sissy Spritz-related incident where she set her hair on fire

Overlap check - nothing yet. Tau's selection was on V-Rock but only ended up in the middle of the rankings for that station, missing the top 100

Spotify tip: You can search for recording released on a certain label by using the search format "LABEL:"

I've found it works best for specialty labels with a distinctive (single) name,e.g. it's pretty useless for RCA Red Label.

You didn't have to wait long for it to appear since it came out in January. I am rolling them out chronologically so even in my own playlist their may some sharp twists and turns though I think it's generally cohesive.

I usually default to the Solti version that was used in Apocalypse Now.

Yeah, while I get what DO is saying and it does make sense for a lot of submissions, mine is kind of like yours in that there's a bit of everything, except on steroids - the only thing it's not going to have is anything recent at all, given anything after 1992 would be anachronistic for two of the games, and the other is nearly 25 years old at this stage as well. But it has everything, and may well gel nicely with almost everyone else's at some point. We've got classic rock, new wave, 80s metal, classical, every type of rap/hip hop you could think of, several EDM derivatives, country, soul, at least one foreign language track, must have some from 1984 given Vice City is set in 1986, at least one that is used as a wrestler's entrance music.

No Batman though. At least to my knowledge

  • King Gizzard is so out there and so unpredictable, I have crossed them off my research pile for a playlist. I liked this tune, so I added Omnium Gatherum to the list.
I think you'd like their song Gaia (although it sounds nothing like Magenta Mountain). Omnium Gatherum album is kinda all over the place and has a little bit of everything.

I liked the randomness of the playlist. I also enjoyed hearing some songs I'd never heard before. For example, even though they only have a couple of songs, I had never heard
landrys hat - favorite Side 2 Track 1s from my record collection

Magenta Mountain - King Gizzard - Omnium Gatherum (2022)
and I liked it a lot.
Wait until you get to their death metal songs!
Speaking of, my first death metal song appears in round 28. As my list is alphabetical, those who know the genre can try to figure out who it might be.

Tau837 – Hair metal

Turn Up The Radio - Autograph

Such a great song.

The playlist has a re-recorded version (you did warn us!) Here's the one you want.

And yes, turn it up - it sounds great loud.
Agree it’s a good tune, although the lead singer indeed had a face made for radio. Reminds me of the creepy sister Zelda from Pet Sematary.

Pet Sematary? Temptation to repost the Pet Stuffers commercial is huge

I forgot this part. That means no room for THIS gem on your list?

Try to figure out as in you are taking guesses? Do I get a cookie if I get the next 3 bands?
