Their track, ‘Drive My Car’, was inspired by Redding’s ‘Respect’, later popularised by Aretha Franklin in 1967. The Beatles were in a writing session at John Lennon’s Weybridge abode that Paul McCartney later admitted was one of their “stickiest”, but a shot of inspiration from Redding helped them get over the bump in the road.
In the 2020 book, George Harrison on George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters, The Beatles guitarist discussed the track. “We laid the track because what Paul would do, if he’d written a song, he’d learn all the parts for Paul and then come to the studio and say (sometimes he was very difficult): ‘Do this’. He’d never give you the opportunity to come out with something. But on ‘Drive My Car’ I just played the line, which is really like a lick off ‘Respect,’ you know, the Otis Redding version — duum-da-da-da-dada-da-dum”.
“And I played that line on the guitar, and Paul laid that with me on bass,” Harrison explained. “We laid the track down like that. We played the lead part later on top of it.”
Next Up - Another posthumous release. Quite sad that Im saying that considering what Redding was on the verge of achieving. All 3 of us rank it this time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is known for their triple guitarists. It may seem odd they reached out to John 5. They didn’t do that exactly. In 07 their management, Roadrunner Records reached out to Chrysalis seeking a songwriter who could add modern grit to their music. Chrysalis producer Bob Marlette gave the assignment to John who was “honored and super excited.”
Raw demos trickled in slowly for a year. John would do his thing. The boys in the band were impressed. They hadn’t met in person when they booked studio time. John arrived at the Nashville studio with shaved eyebrows and black eye makeup, in a black fur coat and high heeled boots. Beast mode, ready to work. The boys thought it was a prank. Didn’t believe this… uh, fella was the guy they’d been working with for a year.
John plugged in his tele and played Jerry’s Rag Chet Atkins style. He told them he knew over a hundred country standards. They lifted their jaws off the floor and started calling out country songs. John knew them all. When the sessions were finished several tracks were done with an agreement to work together on the rest.
That happened back in LA where John introduced them to Rob Zombie, who he thought was perfect for adding an eerie voice to his ominous playing on a song likely to be a hit single. That’s what happened.

The album met with considerably more praise and success than the band’s 3 previous efforts. 5 and Marlette would do the same on 2012’s Last of a Dying Breed making my Skynyrd selection difficult, but Floyd it is.

In live performances, Corgan would often improvise a speech during the extended bass break; as a result the song could extend to 8–10 minutes in length. The speech section is known among fans as "the I Am One rant". The rants were apparently based around the erosion of the belief structure in America's youth, and Corgan has stated they were the gestation for many ideas he later explored on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Some of the rants contained lyrics for future songs, most notably "Zero".

In the run-up to the countdown, I posted about Snoop being among the first to work with Charlie Wilson as he was getting back into music as he recovered from his drug addiction, and shared some of Snoop’s most famous songs on which Charlie Wilson featured on backing vocals. Snoop has returned the favor to “Uncle Charlie” and has featured on a number of Charlie Wilson’s solo songs. This is my favorite of those. Not as funky as The GAP Band could get, but the groove is nevertheless closer to The GAP Band sound than most of Charlie Wilson’s solo songs.

Michael Head #22 - Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band - "Shirl's Ghost" (2024)
We head back to last year for a song from Mick's most recent album Loophole. There are two different versions of "Shirl's Ghost": the first was an instrumental track that closed his previous album and the second is this one which opened the next. He didn't intend it that way but the melody stuck with him and the lyrics came along later.
It's a song about his neighbor in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. Shirley danced in nightclubs in her younger days and kept her old sequined dresses in her cluttered flat along with the ashes of her mum. When she was evicted, she asked Head to help her locate her mother's remains. He did so but weird things started occurring in the building afterwards. He hasn't specified what happened in recent interviews but perhaps we'll get a third version with some followup on the next record.
The trumpets make a comeback to close the gap to 6-4 along with a gorgeous string and distorted guitar interlude around the midway point of the song.

I didn't try, but it's perfect timing for this one as we are preparing my son graduating from HS this week. This one is off their final album Sincerely, The P. As I posted before, their plan was to do 12 albums and go out on their own terms, so this is an album that features some more sentimental tracks like this, and most are at the end of the album so it starts to become a bit of a ride. There are a couple songs on the album ranked higher on the countdown, but this is one of the songs that really got to me when I first started this deep dive. I was not expecting it to get dusty while I was listening to some hip hop albums, but that bit at the end of the song with his son is the cherry on top that usually chokes me up.

Seriously, wtf is going on in that video? This is the first time I've seen that. Here we have a banger that opens the Midnight Vultures album. It is a bit of an oddball of the Beck discography, but it is one of the odd ones we had in our CD collection that made it's way into the car, so I listened to it a ton. Fun album from stuff like this to Beck channeling his inner Prince on a couple tracks.

The John 5 playlist has (on purpose) been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Twists, turns, and definitely some thrills. I have to call “Bygones”, with its usual combo of Dolly Parton and Rob Halford, a very pleasant surprise.

I didn't try, but it's perfect timing for this one as we are preparing my son graduating from HS this week. This one is off their final album Sincerely, The P. As I posted before, their plan was to do 12 albums and go out on their own terms, so this is an album that features some more sentimental tracks like this, and most are at the end of the album so it starts to become a bit of a ride. There are a couple songs on the album ranked higher on the countdown, but this is one of the songs that really got to me when I first started this deep dive. I was not expecting it to get dusty while I was listening to some hip hop albums, but that bit at the end of the song with his son is the cherry on top that usually chokes me up.

My first listen of the week is by Alan Sparhawk, formerly of American Indie legends (and unlikely Xmastime faves) Low. He's performing here with fellow Minnesotans Trampled By Turtles, who give the record a more organic folksy feel. I'm about halfway through and it's quite lovely.

I don't think I purposely made it a rollercoaster ride. I know making the list was a rollercoaster ride. Other than opening with the bluegrass Howdy song, it's mostly metal leaning rock styles up until Dolly and now Skynyrd. I chose the first 15 with a purpose that differs from the final 16. 5 of us could do 5 and have 5 different lists without crossover. His career summary sounds like bs, almost unfathomable. I'm writing it up with anecdotes to help understand it (myself). It comes together and makes sense that way.
It could have been a much wilder white knuckler of a rollercoaster ride.

Pavement, Aesop Rock, and Sufjan (even though I do not think I can even come close to putting this one on because it’s a bit too much, and I’m specifically remembering being in one of wikkid’s posthumous threads on the Fourth of July listening to what I think is a Sufjan song from this album about a Fourth of July when his Mom was dying from cancer—and yup and now I’m going to lie here awake).

You know, I’m okay with his passing. It’s Mom. I don’t mean to diminish anything about him; I remember that particular Fourth and realizing he was gone while hanging this electric American flag he had once told me to hang and then coming inside and hearing that song. I also remember he told me to hang it because Mom likes it, and she was in physical space helping out that day (and knows about his death and is genuinely sorry for me that MoCS is gone and so is wikkid) and yeah, I don’t think I need that tonight.

Caro Emerald with a reggae vibe. Nice. Agree she's an excellent find. What a smooth run - The English Beat, Caro Emerald, UB40.
Oberst/Bright Eyes again with the poetry. Strong song there.
That's some outstanding Billy Joel simey. Not gonna take it over OTGDY, but I'm stubborn. Live Billy is better Billy. The accompanying musicians on the tour with Elton were incredible.
This Beck stood out too. I saw him in San Diego on one of those heavenly San Diego nights. Great show.
My Skynyrd jumps off the list too. haha. Mrs R is right. It's strange. John is right. It's eerie. On first listen I thought it was a Copperhead Road ripoff, but it's not. I think it's country metal whatever that is. Other than the acoustic intro, no idea what guitar is John, but that metal riff is cool whoever it is.
Dammit I like Clapton. If I made a bet on my imaginary race between your artists, I'd be losing because Clapton is winning. Maybe 5 got me focussed on guitar work and well, he is Slowhand.
I've used trance for house cleaning for years. Tenshi made my kitchen sterile.
I kinda hate these call outs because of what I don't mention. So ftr, 5 kinda conditioned my brain for harder music. Pumpkins, Headstones and Metallica are all working for me. Meat Loaf gonna Meat Loaf too.
