I see rock’s entire thread got zapped. Hopefully he didn’t get zapped along with it.
I hope not.

Northern Voice wasn't in that thread, was he? :oldunsure:
Actually I don’t think he was lol. I was and my post got specifically reported to Joe and the mods but I’m still here. If that changes I’ll text KP.
That was such a bad look by jayrod.
I tried to keep it polite and about an idea (I thought related to the thread). I was pretty surprised it was my post that got called out.
That thread was doomed in utero. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Oh no doubt it. Just surprised I was the person who the bat sign for Joe posted.

I didn't see that post (I don't think), but I had checked out for a bit and the thread was gone when I came back. You are one of the most respectful posters on this message board, so I can't imagine what you could've said that would signal the alarms (I'm not asking you to repeat it).

I have finalized my 31 playlist and have decided on my last 5 out. If it's not too early, I might post those and the album breakdown this weekend.

I am not trying to rush anything, but IMO it's better when people post them as they want. It helps spread out the reading/listening a bit vs. all of us doing it the week of before.
I am just about there, too. I actually have an intro list. Amazing.

Listening to Mr Diamond now. Oh, yeah.

A few minutes after rock started it, I posted "This should be fun until the 🔒". Yet it made it to 4 pages. Joe and the other FBG mods must have woken up late.

But when they got there, they didn't even lock it, they vaporized it altogether.

Hope to get my last/first 5 out for Steve Marriott next week, but getting down to even 36 isn’t easy. Could have done 31 alone for both The Small Faces and Humble Pie.

Three more weeks til we start.

In the meantime, who should I hone in on while scouting for my 1.08 pick in an upcoming dynasty draft (Prem-TE, PPR, 0.5 RB; Start 1 QB; Start 1-5 RB/WR/TE, 3 flex, no kickers required). Willing to take risks for a high-ceilling player.

Travis Hunter maybe. He’s falling there in early stuff I’ve seen because nobody has a clue what his snaps will look like on offense and defense but it does seem like most stuff I’ve seen has him as definitely the best WR in the draft with massive upside.

Yeah, I think he’ll go higher but we’ll see.
For ceiling, burden or the 4th RB.

I missed it, but I appreciate rockation potentially sacrificing himself to raise it.
Very important things are happening and to stick your head in the sand, do nothing and be oblivious is one way to cope i guess.
But this is a magic football forum so not the right place, as much as people are passionate about politics.
Its getting to the stage where people need to piss or get off the pot

Alright, I made a little 25min playlist for my last 6 out to kick off the weekend for any wanting a listen.

My playlist isn't in any order of preference. As I posted before, I leaned towards what songs sounded good together for a better playlist experience (hopefully). I knew what song I wanted to start and end with, and what I landed on is songs 19 --> 1 are my "favorite" songs from each of the 9 main albums. The extra is the lone B-side that I have on the playlist. The first 12 are random songs that I landed on after I decided on the 2 songs each album, and paid no attention to what album was getting the focus. Naturally, my favorite albums got the focus anyway.

If you ask them, they have 12 albums. The 9 I have focused on plus ...Or Stay Tuned and The Gettin' Off Stage, Steps 1 and 2. This is why their 9th album is titled 12 Step Program. They had a plan to make 12 and walk away. Touring was taking a big toll physically on both of them, especially Double K. The titles of the 10th and 11th albums were nods to something Mike said about how it was getting harder and harder to get off stage after a show. Their last album Sincerely, the P was released in Feb of 2019. It is still a fun album, but there is also a lot of emotion as they make songs about loved ones lost, each other, and their families in general. Double K died almost exactly the 1 year anniversary of that album being released. It is doubly emotional to listen to with all that background. I didn't know any of that when I started listening to the albums over and over. It is truly amazing that they were able to do every aspect of their albums and career on their own terms and just the two of them. On top of that to have started when they were still in HS and living with their parents. I think at least the first 3 albums were recorded in Thes' house with their equipment.

The breakdown of the 31 songs on the playlist by album:

1 B-side
2 songs each from 12 Step Program and The Next Step
3 songs each from Sincerely, the P, Highlighter, Question in the Form of an Answer, and Fun DMC
4 songs from Stepfather
5 songs each from Carried Away and O.S.T.

I will talk more about each album as they come up in the countdown. Here is the playlist for the last 5 out:

Two absolutely fantastic songs to kick off this mini-playlist. This wasn't planned, but after I made the playlist I did a quick search and with those first two songs I will shout out my :gang2: @rockaction and @Ilov80s, as they were the only mention of People Under the Stairs in the threads. Especially rock - he pimped them a bit, and I've talked to him about them and hip hop in general. I wasn't trying to be contrarian and be 100% new on purpose. I think their sound ramps up a bit in the first 3 albums, so while I like it overall I found similar songs that I thought sounded better on other albums. Time to Rock Our **** was one of my last painful cuts. As for Acid Raindrops - I will have to verify, but I think all 31 songs on my playlist are just Double K and Thes. Acid Raindrops fell in my rankings a little as I heard all their songs and liking songs with just them a little more. Remember - I think all 9 of these albums are great start to finish. They have no songs I don't like or would skip. This was easily the hardest playlist to narrow down that I have done yet.

We will have a lot of L.A. songs on the playlist. La9x is one that just missed out. I like the beat and Cypress Hill nod in this one. The Wiz is a bit of a love letter to Australia. I love the vibe on this one. My Boy D has a great funky vibe, but it doesn't fit in a playlist well because of the talking at the end. Carried Away is an album I think sounds great in the headphones. That is probably my favorite of their albums most days. Mean Spirited I thought people would like the nod in the title to the sample. They have others like this that I think the group would like that are a little more on the nose - Doctor Feelgood and Family Ties.

This is a very good sample of what is in store for the upcoming playlist. I hope that most are still on board and maybe the ice is breaking a little on even the hip hop skeptics. There are some turns and surprises. I think everybody will find at least a few songs to add to favorites playlist.

ETA: I deleted the youtube links since they looked weird to me. I will include links to that during the countdown for the non-spotifyers.

The GAP Band/Charlie Wilson - Special 4/20 Snoop Drop 🚬

As I’m working on my The GAP Band/Charlie Wilson list, I’m realizing I have sufficient material for 31 just from The GAP Band and songs with Charlie Wilson as the primary artist, and I’m moving down stuff with him just on featured/backing vocals (but may still include a one or two in the end). It is almost midnight on the east coast, and thought 4/20 was appropriate to post some Snoop Dogg songs on which Charlie Wilson has provided backing vocals. (Snoop Dogg will come up again in my 31 though, whether you like it or not.)

I mentioned in my introductory write-up that Charlie Wilson has worked a lot with Snoop. Snoop listened to The GAP Band growing up, and was among the first to work with Charlie Wilson when he tried to get his career back on track post-addiction and homelessness (true first was Quincy Jones’ 1995 Jook Joint album).

Snoop first brought in Charlie Wilson to work with him on his 1996 Tha Doggfather album, which also includes some samples of The GAP Band songs. I’m going to skip by those as could be too on point previews for what will be in my 31.

They continued working together over the years and became close. Snoop called him “Uncle Charlie” as a term of endearment. Charlie Wilson’s memoir includes a chapter about the time he got Snoop Dogg to quit smoking weed (for a year anyway) (excerpt of that here).

So, here are a few of my favorite Snoop songs with Charlie Wilson on them. The first two I knew of when they were released (a couple of hits from when The Neptunes were producing for Snoop), but I was not aware of The GAP Band/Charlie Wilson connection until much later. With no offense intended to Snoop, Charlie Wilson’s parts were always my favorite part of those two songs, but I’m partial to the smoother R&B. The third one is one that was a new to me while researching Charlie Wilson songs for this exercise (I know Snoop’s hits, but I’m otherwise not very deep on Snoop).

Signs (and Spotify) - Snoop Dogg (feat. Justin Timberlake & Charlie Wilson)

The songs revolves primarily around Justin Timerblake and Snoop Dogg talking about women that they are interested in and think have reciprocal interest. As Wikipedia describes it: “The song's three vocalists … show three stages of a man's romantic life: Timberlake as the young ingenue; Snoop Dogg as the Casanova in his prime; and Wilson as the experienced older man dispensing advice to his younger companions.” At around the 2:30 mark, Justin Timberlake calls out: “Uncle Charlie preach.” He plays the role of a wise man: “Don't be young and foolish/You don't know what you're doing/You don't know what you've lost until she's gone/And her pretty face, drove you wild/But you ain't have that Snoop Doggy Dogg Style.” This one also has some of Charlie Wilson’s trademark scatting.

Beautiful (and Spotify) - Snoop Dogg (feat. Pharrell Williams & Charlie Wilson)

At around 3:00 in the YouTube (2:35 in the Spotify), Charlie Wilson comes in to help lead the “I just wanted you to know that you are really special/oh my oh my oh my” chorus. He comes back in at around 4:15 of YouTube (3:50 in the Spotify) and leads that chorus again to the end.

Can’t Say Goodbye (and Spotify) - Snoop Dogg & Charlie Wilson

This one samples Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is.” Whereas Charlie Wilson comes in later in the previous songs that I listed, he kicks off this one off with the song’s hook: “I'm a man, I gotta take care of my family/Fighting these pressures in my life/I know my mind should be on shinin' and gettin' Grammy's/But these streets won't say goodbye.” The song then goes about the inability to say goodbye to the hood and the streets. It ends with Charlie Wilson crooning, “You can take the man out the streets, but you can’t take the streets out the man.”

I had to look at the submission date again with all this talk about lists finalised and last 5 outs etc
I gots me plenty of time. All i have is Otis Reddings top 50 songs. Now to work on the order and prepare my surprise
FFS i found 25 “Rare” songs, 2 will definitely make my list and push my cut down list to 60.
I am trying to limit the amount of covers, but they are an essential part of Otis Redding’s catalog, especially the early Volt/Stax stuff
Could be some nasty cuts.

There are some covers that are essential to who Redding was as an artist, so don't feel bashful about including them.

Agree 100%. Similarly, I’m going to have a handful of Marriott-led covers because he did some great ones that he made his own. Not going to shy away just because he didn’t write or originally record it.

I know I've beaten this drum to death, but covers are a lifeblood of popular music. As usual, I blame Jann Wenner and his merry band of imbeciles for perpetuating the myth that you aren't "an artist" if you don't compose all of your own music.

So you’re saying KP is a Wenner acolyte?

Neil Diamond wasn't exactly shy about writing songs, but people covering his music and him covering theirs is a major part of his career. This will be reflected in my list. About thirteen of the picks are covers/covered. (Still finalising list.)

Quite a few covers in the Clapton list, and they are essential.

I texted simey to see if she's still in. We had talked for a bit during the run-up to this round and she had an interesting choice.

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton is one of the most influential and celebrated guitarists in the history of rock and blues music. His career has spanned over six decades, and he has played more than 3,000 concerts in 58 countries to over 2 billion people.

His influence on music is vast and multifaceted, making him one of the most important figures in the history of rock and blues. His contributions have shaped not only guitar playing but also songwriting, musical style, and the evolution of popular music over the decades. Many notable guitarists have cited him as an influence, including Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, and Mark Knopfler.

Clapton was a member of the Yardbirds (1963-1965), John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers (1965-1966), Cream (1966-1968), Blind Faith (1969), and Derek and the Dominos (1970-1971) before launching a very successful solo career. He has won 17 Grammy Awards, 4 Grammy Hall of Fame awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with Cream, and he is the only 3-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, once as a member of The Yardbirds, and once as a member of Cream. He has more than 80 Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum and Diamond Record Awards in the U.S. alone.

Clapton is often called "Slowhand" due to his smooth and deliberate guitar style. He was influenced by the blues from an early age, particularly the music of B.B. King, Robert Johnson, and Muddy Waters. His ability to infuse raw emotion into his playing while maintaining technical excellence set a new standard for guitarists; his use of dynamics, tone, and phrasing has become a key element in the way guitarists approach solos and melodies. His work with Cream and his solo career created a template for the "blues-rock" genre, which has influenced generations of guitarists. Clapton’s use of the Fender Stratocaster guitar became iconic, known for its smooth, bell-like tone, which became a hallmark of his sound.

From pioneering the blues-rock genre to shaping the sound of modern guitar playing, Clapton's contributions have left an indelible mark on both rock and blues. Clapton's emotional depth, technical skill, and dedication to his craft have inspired generations of musicians, ensuring that his legacy will continue to shape the future of music.

Guys, please use the last DM with the corrected link to enter. There is no need to ask for access.

I'm not sure how you are asking me for access, but that's not what to do. The last DM has the form and you enter your songs. Thanks

ETA: I just tested out the last link sent and it worked fine
