I thought of you when you shared the link to your post about Green Day Jaded in Chicago. While the studio version of this track is great it pales in comparison to it being performed live. I think that's the case with all 3 pre-Dookie contributions that made my top 31 and since this is my favorite among them this will be the last we'll see of the Lookout! Records version of Green Day. We're all major label from this point on...
My son saw Green Day on Friday night in Milwaukee. Said they still really bring it.

Per Billie Joe: “Y’all need to legalize weed” @KarmaPolice
With our beer culture and makeup of the state, we might be the last state to do so.
My money would be on Utah.

Lol. Very fair and probably a good bet.

A few thoughts on 15s.

When The World Is Running Down - I often think of the Police as being overplayed classic radio fodder, but then hear great forgotten tracks like this.
Turn It On Again - another forgotten gem, like it more than I did back way back then.
Rafstraumur - favorite by Sigur Ros so far. Reminds me of Explosions In The Sky

A lot of great songs by other artists, just don't have time to write them all up. Also, nothing original to say other than "I like this".

Random thoughts on some of the new-to-me songs from #14:

Jorge turns in a great vocal on Errare Humanum Est.

On Turpentine, Brandi Carlile's vocal reminds me of Lucinda Williams in spots.

Paper Thin Walls has a lot of components doing interesting things separately, but every few measures it all comes together in ways you wouldn't expect.

Rude Mood is a clinic of blues guitar.

Here Comes Another Day is an earworm. I like the bass and organ parts.

Love the drumming on the Sigur Ros song. Seems like the singer is playing off it.

1974 is a great hard rocker. It sounds like a Mott the Hoople or Budgie song from the same year.

Ooh La La in L.A. is an excellent '80s rocker. Is this a Mutt Lange production? It kind of sounds like one.

Clutch's Wookie song is forceful yet melodic. The guitar is Iommi-esque.

I listened to the Facelift album once. In the '90s. I didn't really like it except for Man in the Box. I don't remember what my reaction to Love, Hate, Love was at the time. Today I find it disturbing because we know more about Staley's demons. "Lost inside my sick head/I live for you but I'm not alive" -- a healthy person doesn't write stuff like this. Rock has always been the province of misfits, but this is reflective of something much deeper.

Parklife is very "British".

I've not said much about Doves recently because it can be assumed I like everything from them, but Rise is exceptional. The production and arrangement are incredible, as are the main guitar and vocal melodies. Which shouldn't surprise me because it comes from the same album as the song of theirs that got my attention in the British Isles countdown, which hopefully will appear somewhere in the top 13.

Who Killed Mr. Moonlight is arresting and dramatic.

Excellent use of slide guitar on Blow at High Dough. (And I don't like slide guitar if it's overdone.)

PhishshukeFee

After hearing some cool songs in a music store in '91 and being informed by the guy working there that it was Phish, I picked up their first album, Junta. Fee is the first track, and I was hooked.

Fun lyrics, "the story of the Buddhist weasel Fee’s blood feud with Floyd the chimpanzee over the affections of an aging gospel chanteuse named Millie Grace".

Some effects are used on Trey's vocals on the studio version, and Trey sometimes attempts to emulate this using a megaphone in concert.

The Weeknd, Daft Punk - Starboy This song has over 2.5 BILLION listens. Until this morning, I wasn't one of them. Great inclusion. Like I've said (probably repeatedly in this thread), I love a good collaboration.

#14 The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk - Starboy

Anybody else here ever been to the area around La Ramblas in Barcelona at night, especially the Gothic Quarter?
I actually stayed at a hotel (can't recall the name it was several years ago when I was traveling a lot) just off La Ramblas (i.e., entrance was on a side street).
If any of you go there (and I highly encourage it), make sure you check out the market (Mercado de la Boqueria) and if you like gin, Xixbar Gins & Cocktails.

😭

So I guess there's no "2000 Light Years Away," which used to be my favorite by them. I played it a lot from the Kerplunk! CD I borrowed from somebody freshman year of college before they broke it big. Heh. So I actually was listening to Green Day before Dookie, which is odd, because I don't think anybody would remember it that way (I barely remember it and think of myself as a post-Dookie fan, but I definitely had that CD for like a month due to Duff W.'s generosity) except for me and a few other people that I hung out with back in the fall/winter of my freshman year. Memory is strange that way. Not that it matters, just something to shoot the breeze about. But the last of Lookout!, huh? Welp, we'll see what the future brings.
I've long wondered if my lean towards 1,039 hours over Kerplunk was simply fueled by a purchasing mistake made by a 12 year old. After hearing them for the first time on the radio I went to the record store to buy their album and wasn't expecting to have 2 options. Not knowing anything about them beyond the sound on the radio nor having the internet available to correct my error I chose the cheaper album. After a couple listens I realized I bought the wrong one (1'039 hours) and went back and bought Dookie, but it still stayed in the rotation. Although I never went back and tried Kerplunk. Sure, a few of those songs hit my ears at various times (2K light years was a Jerkey Boys soundtrack add), but never enough for me to add it to my library - whether CD or digital.

This exercise caused me to go back and listen to that album for the first time in decades and...it still just doesn't hit me. Not like the 3 I selected anyway. It's not Father of All or Uno/Dos/Tres bad, but Revolution Radio is probably an apt comp. Good album, just lacks standouts for my tastes.

Damon Albarn song #15

Gorillaz feat. slowthai & SOFT PLAY - "Momentary Bliss" from Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez (2020)

Damon is a bit of a sponge soaking up influences from all over and incorporating them into his music. On "Momentary Bliss", there's a lot of Two-tone and a bit of The Streets. His collaborators this time out are UK Grime artist slowthai and Punk duo Slaves who subsequently changed their name to SOFT PLAY.

Albarn announced the Song Machine concept in January 2020. It was to be a series of musical collaborations released in episodes throughout the year with a wrap-up album coming at the end. It was fortuitous timing as much as anything could be called fortuitous in that strange year. Gorillaz had music in the can and all queued up for release during a time when people had lots of time to listen.

Really cool. i'd also advise going there.

It could be, but 1,039 might have stronger singles, which is why it might be better for a top thirty-one. Who knows, really? There are lots of incidental things that have shaped my music tastes. Certainly a mistaken purchase could be a reason. Especially if you were just getting into them and had a limited budget and wound up with 1,039. Sure. 1,039, IIRC, is a collection of singles/EPs they did before and during Kerplunk!, so those are really their first fleshed-out songs, and they often sound like it. Kerplunk! is a little more mature of an album, and Dookie is light years beyond Kerplunk!

Sorry I've fallen behind in the thread and playlists.

As some of you know from previous drafts, our son is a police officer. The other night he was involved in an incident where his partner was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun. Neil said he isn't able to discuss details of the case but between what he's said and the accounts in the local news, it appears he pursued, wounded and arrested the suspect. We know it's a dangerous job but it's still a shock when you hear about someone shooting at your baby. He's always been a pretty reserved kid but he sounded when he called us the morning after it happened. He seems to be doing better today because he texted a picture of some fried trotters he had picked up when he went to El Paso to visit his partner in the hospital.

Wow! Sending positive vibes to your family and the other officer. Glad to read the last sentence about his partner being in the hospital, I assumed the worst after the shotgun to the face info.

Who Killed Mr. Moonlight

someone shot nostalgia in the back/someone shot our innocence

so says David J on the spoken word intro ... bathed in that haunting piannerr and crying sax ...

yes, it is about John - the nostalgia, the innocence - stolen from all of us ... a literal thief in the night - then we delve into the verse, and that production - the layered pianner notes, the build to the drum fill crescendo - the layered vocal track - this  sounds like a Lennon tune - better than anything his apers ever churned - except for maybe "Cheez n' Onions", which, though straight up parody, really captured that nasally, wonderfully over-dubbed vocal styling.

John were always my guy ... had a brief fling wif George as "fave fab" (was upon first hearing the song "Dark Horse", which, although not in the fabs catalog, it still made me gravitate to the 'quiet one' for a spell), but always returned to Winston O'Boogie.

and i knew upon first listen to this here track that it were the greatest homage to John ever recorded, imo ... it honors and reveres, with the proper dose of deep lament - you can have "Empty Garden", this is my John tribute jam.

speaks volumes to his influence, as well - he's been gone so long now that it's easy to forget how many of those bands that sprung up in the punk movement (and it's wake) actually cited John as a massive presence ... sure, the hippies earned the derision and send-up the short haired young bucks gave 'em ... but John were always a more cynical and bitter chap at his core - yeah, he had his hippie/dippie moment - but he were always that acid tongued Liverpudlian yob, no matter what the de rigueur were ... John belonged to all of that feisty lot - "Working Class Hero" ...  not "Imagine"

although the lads in the 'haus did not have any kinda relationship with John, let alone as intimate as Elton or George or Macca - they crafted the one i adore most ... one that hits every note perfectly, and it does bring me back to the Patriots/Dolphins MNF game, when Howie broke the news ... it was all i could do from calling my so-called gf at the time (we were babies still) and balling me eyes out in the bathroom (couldn't let my brothers see).

we can't paint any pictures/as the moon had all our brushes

this were their last proper album as a functioning group, and Peter were away for pretty much 80% of the work - this is David J's forlorn vocal, absolutely nailing the ambience him and Danny set out to weave upon writing this one ... it's one of my favorite lyrics from this lot, who had no shortage of linguistic gymnastics ... they could turn a f****** phrase, folks.

Sorry this happened, Eephus. Hopefully this will be the last shooting your son and his partner will experience. Thankfully his partner is alive, and your son didn't get shot. It is frightening for everyone. Sending physical and emotional well wishes to everyone, especially to Neil and his partner.

Brandi Carlile Tier 4: Career-spanning standards (I will re-order songs 14-21 into chronological order here for my write up).

Follow - self titled
Turpentine - the Story
Dying Day - Give Up the Ghost
Raise Hell - Bear Creek
the Things I Regret - Firewatcher's Daughter
Harder to Forgive - By the Way, I Forgive You
Crowded Table - Highwomen
This Time Tomorrow - In These Silent Days

This collection of songs would make a satisfying Greatest Hits collection, and I think they cover what Brandi Carlile does really well. There's some boot-stomping country/Americana (Raise Hell), some great harmonies (This Time Tomorrow), and a bunch of great lyrics from a narrator finding her voice. These are the songs that fill out a live show or play list and make you realize the depth of the catalog of an artist with 9 albums.

The top 13 takes what you heard from Tier 4 and does it bigger and better. The two most recent BC albums contain over half of the remaining songs, when the band added more piano and strings to create bigger arrangements. We'll also hear songs that strip that away and really focus on the lyrics and harmonies. I hope you enjoy them!

Played so far:
Singles: 3/3
Self-titled debut: 2/2
the Story: 2/3
Give Up the Ghost: 2/4
Bear Creek: 2/3
the Firewatcher's Daughter: 2/4
By the Way, I Forgive You: 1/5
Highwomen: 2/2
In These Silent Days: 2/5

You've turned in yeoman's work here, JB. I think Carlile is one of the finest artists working these days. Some of her ballads get a little same-y sometimes, but she always finds a way to make them different in the arrangements or when she's like "**** it, I'm belting". And when she goes into belting, better hold on to your hat because she is a force of nature.

Respect, JB

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 18: Grand Junction

In Grand Junction it seemed all the mountains were mocking
Our own little pitiful lives
On the side of the road with her arms in the air
Amazed by the size of the sky

Album: The Price of Progress (Song 2 of 2)

Year: 2023

# of Times Seen Live: 2 of 5 shows

The Story: No time for love, Dr. Jones, so I'll just let Craig tell it:

I was thinking a lot about how we survive, what we do for money, certainly inequalities and how social media and technology play into this. The wish list was interesting — I thought about a couple fighting over the woman, who’s talking to guys online and they’re sending her stuff. She’s with this guy who’s like, “I’m not that into this,” but then he’s like, “But maybe if you get something, we can sell it.”

Bonus video: The video for Grand Junction was shot over the first 2 shows from the 3-night stand in London that Mrs. Scorchy and I went to back in March. It does a great job of capturing the joy (and confetti) of THS fandom.

So scary, Eephus. My father was a police officer and I can remember several nights growing up when I couldn't sleep because he wasn't home from his shift on time. Tough to imagine being in your shoes and it being a child instead. Best wishes to him and I hope his partner has a fast and full recovery.

So far behind... I really need a Middle-Aged Dummies Excuse shirt :ptts:
Unsolicited advice - just work backwards as time allows. I forget where I left off in front of vacation, but today was a lot more enjoyable working my way through the 14's and 15's than picking up at my previous stopping point. I don't know when I'll get back to it, but I enjoy the banter a lot more when I am listening to the same stuff y'all are talking about.

Btw, The Beast & Dragon, Adored...**chefs kiss**

Knew 9 of the 14's if I include the cover.
Some quick notes in playlist order.
1974- another nice rocker! Sounds like it could be from 1974, thought it was Slade at first.
Slade,Frank Black and Dino Jr continue to bring it
Excitable Boy is the only Zevon song I know besides Werewolves
Love,Love,Love Love,Hate, Love, it's like a love song written by Satan- dark, sludgy and dripping with menace
Shoot to Thrill- my fav of the Johnson years
Who Killed Mr Moonlight - liked this even before reading it was a Lennon tribute. Bonus points for that!
Even it Up and another I'm expecting to hear latter deserve more air time on the radio
Blow at High Dough- first single I ever heard by them- been hooked ever since
Complications - don't like electronics/techno in general but this was ok. Liked the medical machine beep and flatline thing they did lol

Falling behind so here are my thoughts on the first half of the 14s

New to me likes - Todd, Modest Mouse, Trail of Dead, Kinks, Taylor Swift, Chicago, Ryan Adams, ELO, Frank Black, Clutch

SRV - my fingers started bleeding just listening to this. Whew!

Phish - the vocals on this really reminded me of Sublime.

Stevie Wonder - this would be a song on the soundtrack of my youth. Was always playing at home or in the car. I felt rich and exotic just singing along to this.

I’ll try to finish up my listen this afternoon.

Second half complete - more thoughts:

Alice In Chains - this album totally fell off my radar, but I really liked this. Sounds like it could have come straight from Superunknown

AC/DC - shoot to thrill is one of my favorites. Such a great song.

The Hold Steady - I don’t mean this in a bad way (since I know he’s not too popular around these parts), but the chorus totally reminds me of Piano Man. It took me a while to make the connection because this didn’t have the La da ditty da part, but I knew the chorus was familiar to me.

Doves and Spoon awesome again. The Foos song was beautiful.

I wasn’t familiar with the Elton John song, but really liked it.

Officer Anthony Ferguson passed away late Sunday night. Neil was informed he'd been taken off life support shortly after sending us the food pictures in the afternoon.

Not sure if we're going down there. We want to be with he and his wife of course but don't want to crowd in as he processes everything that has happened.

Damon Albarn song #14

Blur - "Parklife" from Parklife (1995)

I've whined about this before but I'm really bad with rankings. If you ask me my favorite anything, I'll hem and haw and agonize over the response. I'm not dysfunctional in this regard--I can go to an ice cream parlor and choose a flavor with no problems. Just don't ask me what my favorite flavor is.

I previously ranked "Parklife" at #31 of the British countdown. It was my only song with Damon Albarn in either the UK or World threads. So you'd think that "Parklife" would be at or near the top of this ranking. But here we are at #14, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

"Parklife" is a great British song and I probably should have ranked it higher than #31. The smashing glass in the intro is one of the best sound effects in Pop music. The colorful lyrics paint a picture of characters inhabiting a public park. Lou and I see these people every day and I can relate. But again here we are at #14, I can't go any higher in an Albarn countdown because all he does is sing the chorus. The spoken word verse is delivered by actor Phil Daniels. In this way, "Parklife" is a prototype for a lot of Gorillaz songs to come where a guest raps the verse and Damon takes the chorus.

I have the utmost respect for the challenging job the police have... and the utmost respect for your son for doing that job.

Condolences to your son, Officer Ferguson's family, and all of his friends.

Warren and Miami newspaper columnist and novelist Carl Hiaasen struck up a friendship in the early 90s and wrote several tunes, mostly about Florida. This one became a concert staple and highlight in his later years.

Foo FightersJust Win BabyBreakout

This is the third song I chose from There Is Nothing Left To Lose, the Foos' third studio album. Here is the official video. Here is a video of an awesome live performance at Wembley in 2008. And here is a video of an acoustic performance on the Craig Kilborn Show.

Grohl has said this about the song:

"When we were recording 'Breakout' the band had to tell me to tone down, because the neighbours were giving dirty looks and threatening to complain that someone was getting murdered. So I nailed it one more time. My throat was gone after that, man."

"'Breakout' started off almost as a joke, just a play on the word and taking the piss out of your typical tortured romance love story. It's supposed to seem kinda ridiculous because I can't imagine anyone wanting to break off a relationship just because they have acne, y'know?

In 2023, Consequence of Sound ranked what they characterized as all 156 Foo Fighters songs up to that point, ranking Breakout #9. Here is an excerpt from their writeup:

How good was ‘90s Dave Grohl? So good that he could squeeze a hit out of a song about acne. That’s when you know you have the greasy golden touch as a songwriter. And “Breakout” was everything you could ask for coming off of The Colour and the Shape: melodic, explosive, and agitated. You could sing along to it, dance to it, head bang to it, and scream back at it.

It’s something Grohl and the Foos had a knack for doing there for a stretch — constructing songs that could be everything to everyone without ever coming across as half-baked or slapdash. Have some of those songs dated a bit? Sure, but in that good way that lets you remember why you loved an era of music so much. Nearly 20 years later, “Breakout” keeps “making us dizzy running circles in our head” and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

#13 All Day and All of the Night (1964 - single)

Pressed by record companies for a follow up to You Really Got Me, the Kinks pounded this one out with a similar sound and scored another hit. They didn’t wait for another album releasing this one as a single trying to ride the wave of success of YRGM. This song reached #7 in the US…only 2 other songs reached higher at #6. One of those (Tired of Waiting) was already presented in my countdown. It’s amazing to me, reading the lyrics, how these early Kinks songs were regarded as raunchy. A little edgy perhaps, but definitely pretty tame by today’s standards.

There were a few controversies surrounding this song. There were allegations that the Doors lifted the riff from this for Hello, I Love You. There were denials, admissions of guilt, a supposed settlement…details vary depending on who you believe. The publisher wanted to sue, but Ray Davies did not.

There was also some scuttlebut about Jimmy Page playing the guitar solo on this track (as well as several other early Kinks songs including You Really Got Me), but Ray Davies put this to rest. As Davies recalled in a 1981 interview with Creem magazine: "I remember Page coming to one of our sessions when we were recording "All Day And All Of The Night". We had to record that song at 10 o'clock in the morning because we had a gig that night. It was done in three hours. Page was doing a session in the other studio, and he came in to hear Dave's solo, and he laughed and he snickered. And now he says that he played it! So I think he's an *******, and he can put all the curse he wants on me because I know I'm right and he's wrong. He's an *******. Dave is a great guitar player. He's got his limitations, but he's never been given justice for doing that. He made that when he was 16-years-old. He created a sound, and after that came Jimi Hendrix and all the fuzz boxes." Page is, in fact, credited with some session work and rhythm guitar for a few of the tracks on their debut album.

I'm not content to be with you in the day time
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night

I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yeah, all day and night time yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night

Oh, come on

I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yeah, all day and night time yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night (time)
All day and all of the night
