Mike Wallace Rib Cartilage Injury (1 Viewer)

Mike Wallace left the game during the game winning drive last week. On Monday or so it was reported that he has a rib cartilage injury and that he would be limited in practice this week. All indications from the team so far, though, are that he should play this week.

What type of injuries can be sustained to rib cartilage? What sort of affects would those injuries have on athletic performance? I am no doctor, but I imagine that he may have torn some cartilage from the bone (pure speculation). If that is the case, it seems like the kind of injury that could really limit a person's ability to partake in athletic activity without pain. I have a hard time imagining being able to run at full speed with a painful rib cartilage injury, since each step, and with every breath, your lungs and chest are expanding, contracting, and otherwise being stretched.

I really do not know what injury he has and what affects it would have on a player. That is why I am asking the shark pool if anyone knows what sort of injuries can be sustained to rib cartilage, and what sort of affects those might have. Is it possibly time to sell Mike Wallace before we see his potential blow up, super stud emergence season turn into something completely different and his value plummets?

I've had torn rib cartilage before & it's very painful. Depending on severity & where exactly the tear is, it basically prevents you from twisting your upper body at all w/o a lot of pain. Obviously not good for a WR.

I could do stationary things like bench press without any problems. But shifting my weight, or doing any kind of twisting was too painful to bare. Even sneezing was excruciating the first few days. It was 3 weeks before I felt 100%.

I didn't have the option of painkilling injections, so I imagine that'll help Wallace get back sooner.

I've had bruised/torn rib cartilage before. Running was no problem, didn't hurt at all. I was unable to raise my arms over my head (obviously bad for a WR) and could do no chest exercises at all. A simple push-up was too painful. I'm sure pain killers will allow Wallace to play, but playing with the injury may cause it to take longer to heal fully.

if he's practicing on Wed even in a limited fashion, I'm sure he's fine...if they thought there was a chance he wouldn't go, they would have him resting

too many rib cartilage injuries to know what exactly is going on...

He said he is playing and not even wearing a Flak Jacket, could be more of a reason to rest on some practices, he may not be as serious as some are thinking, maybe even more minor then Romo's rib, which was cracked. He should be fine.

He got popped pretty good with a straight on hit in that game-winning drive. I don't recall him staying down at all, not even a moment, as the Steelers were in a two-minute drill.

I'm actually surprised Tomlin mentioned it at all, as it would likely be much better not to tell the opponents. I suppose it's honorable by what the league wants coaches to do, but I'm pretty sure it's not the way all coaches operate.

I can't see it affecting Wallace's performance at all. Certainly I would start him in full confidence, in particular with what looks like a high-scoring game in Houston on the horizon.

Antonio Brown?
Good addition to the thread.
Emmanuel Sanders?
Good job. Can you name any other Pittsburgh receivers?
Jerricho Cotchery?Relax, I was just trying to get some thoughts and didn't feel like putting up a long winded post about it. Brown has a lot of targets already with sharing time. Good luck in your leagues this weekend.

Thoughts? If Wallace is out or limited Brown will get more opportunities and therefore will probably be more productive? Still not sure how that relates to the OP.

Thank you! :lmao:

Wallace is going to be fine. I'm willing to bet he gets a lot of targets on shorter out routes as Joseph has played against him. Wallace's rookie "coming out" party was directly against Joseph and Wallace has burned him on multiple occasions. Expect BIG cushions, or expect at least 1 long TD to Wallace.

As for Brown, Cotch, and Sanders, Cotch is supposed to be healthy and active for this game. Unfortunately, he won't take Ward's place. After Sanders' mental errors last week, Tomlin might bench him similar to how he benched Mednenhall back in 2009. Of course, Mendenhall had his career best game next week, so perhaps Sanders is a sneaky pick. As for now, Brown is still getting targets each week and is producing first downs. He's the guy across the middle. Will he produce?

Only Bruce Arians, the stupidest offensive coordinator in the NFL, knows the answer to that question.
