Mike Williams cut by Oakland (1 Viewer)

Raiders waived WR Mike Williams.

Williams was thrown-in with Josh McCown for the Raiders' fourth round draft pick, but had been inconsistant all season. He dropped a key pass on fourth-and-14 in Week 8, and that was apparently the last string. Journeyman Tim Dwight was signed to replace him.

wasn't he Kiffin's former star at USC? seems like a strange move unless they think he has NO nfl future at all. guys still only 23.
Sometime teams show urgency when they need to sign a player at another position, activate a player from PUP, etc. This would not be one of those cases since they only added Dwight. My guess is the drop on 4th and ballgame sealed his fate.

Such a shame since he had so much potential coming out of college, a big and physical wideout. But gilmore is right what really hurt him was declaring too early and taking a year off from playing actual football. But too bad he couldn't keep his weight down, what is it with USC players and getting fat. Speaking of wasted potential what happened to the Lion's other high draft pick Charles Rogers?

Whatever...the BK Lounge is always looking for "talent".

With that said, to this day, I will never understand why Clarett and Williams felt a year off from F-ball was better than joining the CFL.

Does this mean Millen was actually right about being wrong? Pretty sad when his best moves are getting rid of the crap he reached for in the draft.

Yes, rumor has it the Sizzler he worked at during his college days might hire him back as a busboy but sources say they are weighing all their options right now.

White and Williams were always fat. There were rumblings all along of BMW being forced to switch to TE in the NFL.

I couldn't have been more wrong about him.
Ditto. :goodposting:I remember watching him totally dominate at USC and thinking he was going to be a beast at the next level.I mean, how can the guy who made one of the best catches I have ever seen -- delicately plucking the ball out of mid-air with one hand for a TD vs. Oregon St. -- have regressed to this level?Another prodigal wide receiver bites the dust ...

Probably because they were being given anything and everything at such young ages (don't believe for a second they weren't) and figured if they could have everything w/o having to do a thing, why work for anything.Remember these were kids, listening to the wrong people. Unfortunately they never grew up. At least Mike has his freedom and a nice signing bonus from the draft..

I can see someone picking him up and making him a TE. This of course would have to be done with him allowing that to happen. He could be a freak at the position (if he had any drive). Not sure why he has been so against it.

Doubt he gets back into the league, but the Titans would be the most logical destination with Chow/Fisher. Regardless, he should try and make a comeback as a TE.

I was thinking the Titans myself, not only because of the Fisher, Chow USC connections, but he's got to be better than Eric Moulds at this point in Moulds career.

It's an example of how people get overly excited about spectacular plays, while ignoring the mundane. Brandon Lloyd has made some amazing grabs, but he's just not that good of a receiver overall. Williams, besides getting out of shape, doesn't seem to have the natural timing that the best receivers have in terms of jumping at the right moment and meeting the ball at the peak of the jump. Without that timing, and without the speed and agility to separate from pro corners or even safeties, he's got serious problems at the pro level. Maybe Miami will take a shot at him.

With BMW it had very little to do with ignoring the mundane because there wasn't anything mundane about him. He caught everything thrown in his general direction at USC and his timing was seemingly flawless. He dominated just about every single game he played. It may have simply been a case of him being so physically superior to the talent he was facing that he never worked on refining his game for the next level. This just further magnifies the mistake he made leaving 'SC as a sophomore.

This was one of the few things that Casserly got right as GM of the Texans. He said that BMW had to be used in really specifc way, sort a TE/WR tweener. Of course, Williams bigger problems were more than likely dedication and discipline.

I'm not sure he gets any more chances. Maybe he gets converted to a TE ala Mikhael Ricks, but more likely he goes the way of Charles Rogers. At least Charles Rogers had two good games to start his career before flushing it down the toilet.

People need to stop thinking that he is the same player he was at USC. Ryan Leaf and Lawrence Phillips were awesome in college too.

Mike Williams worked hard to get paid. He did. He got 9.5 -10.5 million guaranteed. Then he stopped caring, stopped going to meetings, stopped trying. It isn't going to change, unless he spends all of it. Then he will try to get back into the league and get paid again.

I believe that is his argument. Very few WRs at the pro level can be successful, much less dominate on pure physical skill alone. the ability to run good routes, understand how to beat press coverage, being able to come back to the QB, etc. These mundane things are what makes insert your favorite 6'0 200 lb WR last in the league forever and many of the physical freaks not last until they are 25.

Guy made more when he signed his contract then you probably will in your entire life. Just saying..

The odds are that he'll be trying to scrape together a living selling his autograph to the USC fans who remember him by the time he's 35, though. I take no joy in saying that, either. I hope the kid either gets his head in the game and comes back or has been smart enough to put most of that money away to take care of himself until he figures out what he is passionate about.

NASHVILLE - Raiders wide receiver Mike Williams approached Coach Lane Kiffin in the middle of the game and implored him to call his number on a play run in practice numerous times.

"Give me a chance to make a play," Williams told Kiffin.

Sure enough, Kiffin called Williams' number. Fourth-and-14 from the Tennessee Titans' 30-yard line with 1:21 remaining Sunday.

Just as in practice, Williams ran the proper route, got open, waited for Daunte Culpepper's pass and . . . dropped the ball at the first-down marker. End of game. Titans win 13-9.

"You can't ask for a better situation," Williams said. "We're on the road, fourth-and-forever, game on the line. What more can you ask for? That was the play that lost the game. I had an opportunity and I blow it. This is going to be hard to swallow."

a whole lot of people owe Marinelli and Martz an apology over this waste as well. All last year i read on this board how stupid they were for not playing him or giving him a chance...well we know why they get paid to make those decisions now, don't we?

Anyone willing to put money on the under that has try out for Minny?
As a Vikes fan I'd be pleased to see them at least take a look at him. We lack big underneath targets. MRob did well for us when he was here and we need that.

Poor man's Freddie Mitchell.

:lmao: I am sure Marinelli and Martz really care about what the people on this board think.

thank god. get rid of this piece of trash. he should have been cut 3-4 weeks ago when he was pumping his fist in the air as fargus broke a long run instead if blocking.

So has this guy completely invalidated Kiper?
I don't think so. There isn't a person on Earth that's going to pick 100% in the NFL. Mel does a great job evaluating these players and sometimes there is just no accounting for bad examples of human nature. Having said that and considering the tendencies in the NFL I would not be surprised to see some team give him a shot. Even on the Practice Squad at the very least.

Mike is a another good example of why the NFL needs a rookie salary cap. Dont give these young guys Millions..make them earn it. What incentive did BMW have to work for it? nothing.
