Minnesota Vikings 2008 Regular Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Congrats to the Vikings and you fans.

D has really stepped up and Allen is a freakin beast.

Shocked at Tarvaris lately...does him throwing 4 TDs against Arizona discount Favre's 6 TDs against them earlier in the year?

ADP is scary good too.

The only saving grace as a Packer fan is Chilly will be around for another year. Though, McCarthy not looking any better at the current moment.

GB can help you all next week, but I would not count on it.

TJ's performances against the Lions and ARI's poor pass defense really was nothing more than taking advantage of the situation, and stepping up to a level where he could perform in the limited role the Viking offense asks of him. They were confidence builders, and while his TD passes to Berrian and Wade were beautifully placed, I am still skeptical that he's finally "there". He's growing though. It would be nice if the offense were able to rely on him more.

I was thinking about this as well. Of course I hope the Vikes win, but more importantly, they need to win so I don't have to go for the Packers on Monday night!! :lmao:

Jackson to start Sunday for VikingsEDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP)—The Minnesota Vikings will start Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback Sunday against Atlanta.Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell made the announcement Thursday. Jackson was benched after the Vikings started the season 0-2, but has played very well in place of the injured Gus Frerotte over the last two games.Frerotte injured his lower back in the first half against the Lions two weeks ago. Jackson has completed 70 percent of his passes for 268 yards and five touchdowns in six quarters to help the Vikings to wins over the Lions and Cardinals. The Vikings need a victory or a Chicago loss in the final two weeks to wrap up their first division title since 2000.
Interesting.. IMO... if Jackson plays this Sunday as well as he has the last 6 quarters there is no way Ferrotte sees the field again.. I have no problem with that.. Time to find out what we have for next year.. Can he handle the pressure? Has he started to finally "get it" ???

I will second the :penalty: .

I cant believe that after the start this team had they still have a shot at the #2 seed in the NFC.
If they are able to do this (it is within reach), they will have beaten every NFC division champion. Also, they would have gone 3-1 against the (mighty) NFC South. I'm so sick of people saying the NFC North is weak. Other than the Lions the teams are always competitive. Not nearly as poor as people make it sound.

Well it's no NFC West, but definitely one of the weaker divisions.

I can't believe I am torturing myself by watching this 1998 NFC Championship on NFL Network!!
Do you watch the CBS show how I met your mother? This past episode had a Vikings bar set in New York...and anytime anyone mentioned the game the whole bar slammed their fists and cussed.

I'd be right there with them!! (but no, never watch the show)As much as it pains me, so many people have discounted how good that Falcon team was (although I still think that Vikings' team was one of the top ten ever).

:bag:

ADP needs to have a one on one conversation with Tiki Barber. If you remember, Tiki had a horrible time hanging onto the ball until he started carrying the ball up to his chest. It didn't impact his running and helped him hang onto the ball.

T.J. has looked great the last 3 games. Sure he had a fumble yesterday that was a  but other than that I thought he played a very good game.

I'm on the fence now on whether to go after a Cassel in the off season, or stick with TJ as he has had 2 1/2 VERY good games.

With the Giants winning last night, they will be resting most of the "stars" in the 2nd half. So maybe I won't have to cheer for the Packers tonight..

Ah heck with it, it is the Holidays.. GO PACK!!! ;)

All you can do after a game like that is

:goodposting: :hot: :lmao: :lmao: :)

The numbers and faces change around here, but one thing hasn't: It's awfully hard to play the game and hold onto the ball with both hands wrapped around your throat.

Choke?? <_< I guess we will agree to disagree as I didn't think they choked..I thought the defense, TJ and really the whole team for that matter played a Very good game. The fumbles are what killed them. To turn the ball over that many times and still have a chance to win the game at the end says a lot about this team. Previous Vikings teams would have thrown in the towel once they were down 24-7.

Really? Wow, it's all I could think of watching that game. Berrian muffed a punt. Wade muffed a kickoff. Defensive line repeatedly jumped offsides on important downs. Nearly our entire defense failed to fall on Ryan's fumble. A total of 7 fumbles overall. Even Paul Allen on KFAN today says everyone he talked to during and after the game commented on how tight the team appeared. If 7 fumbles isn't a chokejob, what is?

 Fumbles, IMO are not usually a :choke: as much as trying to hard. Sometimes the ball bounces the right way, sometimes it doesn't.. A :choke: job, IMO, would have been falling behind 24-7 and losing 24-7 or worse. BTW.. The defense jumping offside is choking?? If so, than they have been choking since the first preseason game.. ;)

FYI- I was not suggesting this chokejob made other chokejobs not chokejobs. :goodposting: Bottom line, this game was not at all unlike the Atlanta game where far more went wrong than Gary Anderson missing a kick. Whether it was Robert Smith running out of bounds multiple times in the 4th, or Robert Griffith dropping 2 easy interceptions... true chokejobs are a full game event. Think back to the Arizona game where literally 10 minutes worth of plays fell in favor of Arizona and only culminated on the 4th down TD to Poole that everyone remembers.

Still love the team, but PA hit the nail on the head this morning when he commented the game we saw yesterday was the performance most Viking fans anticipated with playoffs on the line. It's our legacy; you're better off embracing it IMHO. 9-7 is still a pretty good season.

this is true, when all the national commentators last week were talking like the vikes were in the playoffs already I could tell they didn't follow this team to close. Kinda sad we gotta hope for NY to rest there guys next week, I don't see GB getting it done for us tonight.

Well, with the Giants winning last night the Vikings BETTER win next week or you are correct on the :choke: comment.

If the standings stay the way they are, as much as I bleed Purple, I'd put the odds at better than 70/30 we are one and out with the Cowboys being our opponent..

IMHO that's our dream matchup. The only team that's choked more in recent years with playoffs in play or on the line is Dallas. Call it the irresistable force vs. the immovable object.

I think the most frustrating thing about watching that game was Adrian Peterson. He appears to give us the best chance to win and the best chance to lose all at the same time. Nobody can really stop him when he gets that attitude that he isn't going down, but then he seems to cough up the ball when he does that. It's very irritating when I'm wanting the Vikings to bench someone with so much talent.

Way to go Bobby. :bag:

Chicago Sun-TimesEx-receiver Wade: Bears will "definitely blow it"By Brad Biggson December 21, 2008 8:54 PM Everything out of the Bears' hands that could have gone wrong, did go wrong last weekend. The pendulum swung the other way for them this weekend as every outcome they needed for help in their bid for a third postseason appearance in four years happened. But ex-Bears wide receiver Bobby Wade doesn't think the Bears are going to do their part now that their turn is coming Monday night against Green Bay at Soldier Field. More on that in a minute.Minnesota's 24-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons took one of the wild-card spots out of play, but it kept the Bears very much alive in the race for the NFC North. Quite simply, the Bears (8-6) must beat Green Bay Monday night and win at Houston next Sunday, and have the Vikings (9-6) fall at the Metrodome to the New York Giants. It looks more and more like that game is going to have meaning for New York in the sense that they need to come out and play a good game to build some momentum entering the postseason. The Giants, who have lost two in a row, are trailing Carolina 21-13 at halftime right now."We need the Bears to blow it,'' Wade told reporters in Minneapolis with a laugh. ``Where are they playing, at home? Great. They'll definitely blow it.''The Bears can still sneak in via the wild card but that scenario is going to require some substantial help and when you're counting on the Oakland Raiders to fly across the country and face Tampa Bay, who has a head coach in Jon Gruden who despises the Silver & Black, well, those are long odds. But here is what the Bears need to get that second wild-card spot:1. Bears beat Green Bay Monday and then win at Houston Sunday.2. Oakland defeats or ties the Buccaneers at Tampa.3. Philadelphia defeats or ties Dallas at Lincoln Financial Field.

Even though I stayed up cheering for the Packers :lmao: :lmao: I have to say I'm glad the bears won.

If the Vikings can't beat a Giants team that has nothing to play for on Sunday, not only don't they deserve to be in the playoffs, but Childress deserves to be fired.

If they lose, this will be two years in a row where all they needed to do is win a HOME game and they were in. :goodposting:

I'm not glad the Bears won, but I agree with you on the second statement. The Vikings need to earn this playoff spot by beating the Giants. I'm interested to see if the Giants treat this like a meaningful game or not.

if the bears lose this weekend I am good with that myself, I dont care how they get in. houston is a terrible matchup for the bears and they are alot better than the packers. I expect the giants to play all of there healthy guys the whole game, with any questionable guys (jacobs, tuck, hixon) to sit. I also expect the vikes to get it done this weekend but then again I have seen this show before and I hope it isnt the same ending.

FWIW, Vikes and Texans are both favorites to win this week. I know this doesn't count for anything, but the oddsmakers must have some faith in these teams.

Why??I can see no reason to have Eli and other "Star Players" out there after the first half.. This game is a Post Season pre-season game for them.

:goodposting: The only reason the Giants give their all to win is if they fear facing the Vikes in the playoff and want to give the Bears a chance to claim that playoff spot. I highly doubt that's the case.

hopefully you guys are right, I just don't see that coach changing what worked for them last year, especially when they have a week off anyways.

I know the season isn't over yet, but I was just wondering what people think the Vikings need in the draft. They don't have any glaring holes at this point, but they do have a couple positions to address.

1. Right Tackle

2. WR - I hope Sidney Rice is still hurt because if he isn't then he should be putting up better numbers. Still gold in the red zone (if they'd use him more), but can't seem to get open like last year.

3. CB - I really like how Griffin has stepped up, but I am so tired of Benny Sapp getting 1-4 penalties a week, and I don't know what happened to McCauley.

Thoughts?

Hey Mr. Williams GET WELL IN 7 Days!! Vikings are going to need you..

Eagles are on a HUGE roll since the benching of McNabb. Their Defense is looking scary..

Our Defense hasn't been exactly playing lights out lately...

Saying I'm :tfp: about this match-up would be a understatement...

I'm not very confident either. The win today over the Giants practice squad wasn't very convincing. Hopefully they turn it up a notch next weekend.

Between draft and free agency I think what they need is in no particular order.....RT - Cook not the answerC - Birk will go elsewhere to like Pitt or BuffaloQB - either a younger mentor or another youngster to challengeDE - always need more pass rushers, I've been saying this for yearsDT - at least depth in the middle since Pat is up there in age and I don't know enough about Guion.LB - basically for depth and special teams

They not only need a QB, they need a QB who is good enough to put TJ on the bench. I think TJ makes a decent #2 QB, a guy who can come off the bench when needed. There is a place in the league for guys like that. It really does not make sense to rely on him or give him token competition from a Brooks Bollinger type. Despite the couple decent games he gave he's just not a guy who is going to get this team to a Super Bowl, IMHO.

We will know Sunday.. Win or lose we will know.. :mellow:sounds more and more like Cassel maybe off the table as Brady's rehab is not going very well.

Sorry guys, but our defense is playing better than any in the league right now and we have won 3 of 4 and are in first place. You need to get over the "Fire Childress" talk. The offense went for almost 400 yards yesterday. I don't hear anyone saying they should bench Peterson - his two fumbles cost the team scoring opportunities and should have cost them the Saints game.
What?Defense playing better than any in the league?

Except for that Titans defense that dominated the Vikings. The Bears who will dominate them. The Giants...

Look, the Vikings were basically dominated by NO and got lucky on some crappy calls and idiotic play calling in the end.

They got the calls yesterday too.

And you are "tied" for first..but GB beat you so...no first place.
Division Champs Baby!!!It has been quite a season and I even gave up on Childress early but, if before the season started you asked any Vikings' fan if they would take 10-6 and a division championship, they would have said "you betcha," so it doesn't matter how you get there, just get there.

I'm still a bigger Childress fan than most (not that that is saying much) - and looking back after one loss I even asked for him to be fired - but I think that he has built this team for his style and they have a shot to get better next year. I can't believe that the team wins the North and all the fans say is Fire Childress. Unbelievable. 6-10 to 8-8 to 10-6...that is progress.

I know it was ugly against some Giant backups yesterday, but that is a game that the Vikings from a few years ago give away when they are down by 9 in the fourth quarter. They showed character which is new for the Vikings.

I am happy this morning!

All at the same time, Phily looks tough right now and with out big Pat I am worried.

But as long as the Vikings do not turn the ball over I think they can win.

I still think the coaching and the QB situation will stop this team from going to the SB. I'm happy with the playoffs but feel the Vikes are a long shot to advance very far. This team has a lot of talent, even TJ is showing his skills but I don't think he's polished enough to help his team win a SB this year. Hopefully they prove me wrong and really I wouldn't consider any NFC team dominant this year so there is a chance. Philly will be a huge test for TJ because if anybody saw the Giants bring the pass rush yesterday, wait until the Eagles D gets their chance. On the other hand, the Giants could have done TJ a favor by providing a learning opportunity.
