Lions fan here chiming in to say I agree with HSG. First of all, I realized during last night's game that I found it really hard to hate this team. You have a great HC who's not just a brilliant offensive mind but also appears to be a decent human (I'm thinking of what he said to Anthony Richardson after the Colts game). You have a DC who I've always liked, and even if he seemed to have some personal communication issues at his last job, he's a heck of a defensive playcaller. You have the best WR on the planet. Your RB is one of those beloved teammates. 4 Superbowl losses, 1998, plus other years allows to get upset when a team that had no expectations has a chance to win the #1 seed and once again chokes away the chance.

As a lifelong Lions fan, the past two years have been super weird. But I decided heading into last season that, win or lose, I was done with the whole "Same old Lions" crap. If they lost, it was because they weren't good enough or they screwed up or, as it turned out, because we missed on a couple 4th downs, our sure-handed RB fumbled, and an INT bounced off the freakin' facemask of our DB and into a WR's hands. Not gonna lie, that game totally sucked. But that's the only way I ever viewed it: As something that sucked. Not the fulfillment of a Biblical prophecy.
Last night was your crappy game, unfortunately at the worst time (or maybe not, since you're still in the playoffs). It happens. Goff crapped the bed in Houston but somehow managed to escape with a win. Our defense crapped the bed vs Buffalo and didn't get so lucky.
Anyway, I think you have a very good shot at beating the Rams, and if the other favs hold serve, we'll see Round Three, which I think will be a great matchup but which will also scare the heck out of me. Until that happens, good luck!
It's tough to move away from that mentality when it has been beaten into you (thanks Bounty Gate for 2009 debacle) as a fan. The differing ways the Vikes have kicked the fans in the nuggets is very impressive with the myriad of ways it takes place. I am actually relieved they didn't get the #1 seed as that would have been a much more cruel exit to the playoffs after this tremendously unexpected season. My expectations are relatively low for anything happening of consequence. I do believe the Vikes should beat the Rams and then beating a team 3 times in one season isn't as difficult as it seems......or is it? The "sweeping" team is 15-9 (as of 2023) so it is a daunting task. It's the hope that kills you and Vikings fans know this better than anyone.

We went through a 9 year stretch of Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary, Dennis Erickson, Jim Tomsula, Jim Tomsula again, and Chip Kelly.

Agree to disagree. That is not misery. Frustration - sure.............. Disappointment - ok.............in the end you can always go back and remember the FIVE Super Bowl wins to put a smile on your face and enjoy the good times. That is not misery. You have more Super Bowl wins than the Vikings have appearances......let alone winning none of those 4. We have Gary Anderson, Bounty Gate, and the four losses in the big game. Misery heaped upon misery. This is a battle you can never win. What you have experienced isn't anything close to misery....it's some mild discomfort from indigestion after eating a 5 star meal.

Go back to the beginning of the season where we had no expectations. The team has far surpassed even the most optimistic outlooks. Even if we lose Monday (I think we win though) it'll suck but it should be nowhere near the stomach punch that was 98 or 09.

From a more pure perspective, "It's better to have loved an lost than to have never loved at all."
From a more crude, but I think more realistic perspective, "It's better to have a few amazing nights with the hot girl only to have her break your heart than to never have had her at all."
In other words, those lonely painful Sunday nights are mitigated somewhat by positive memories even if you think you'll never experience them again.
I agree it isn't close to those years as far as soul crushing.......but there is still time for the hope to get ratcheted up enough to rival those. Beat the Rams, Beat Detroit, Lose to Green Bay at home in the NFCCG. Not sure what fluky thing could happen for the loss but I am sure there is something awesome like fumbling the snap on the kneel down

Years ago (pre-2004) I heard an analogy about Cubs fans vs Red Sox fans: Cubs fans are the single guy at the bar who gets shot down by the hot girl before he can even open his mouth. Red Sox fans spend all night buying her drinks, flirting and getting positive feedback, then they leave for two seconds to use the john and another guy swoops in and takes her home. I think that's a little like Lions vs Vikes. Prior to last year, Detroit had made one NFCCG in the Super Bowl era and got run off the field by a historically great team. Vikings lost four SBs along with some truly epic heartbreaking CG losses (1998, 2009). Each hurt in their own way. But I get it.

Coincidentally, I can pinpoint the exact moment I had the epiphany I mentioned in my previous post: Before last season, I was wondering whether I should be nervous that people were actually picking the Lions to win the NFC North. And I just decided, why am I doing this reverse psychology BS to myself?
I can't tell you to stop thinking that way. But I will tell you that the sooner you can find a way to stop thinking that way, the better off you'll be. (Personally, I would recommend beating the Packers on the road in a game that your team has historically always found a way to lose. That does wonders).
Most of my comments are just jokes fueling the flames of history. In my mind I know none of that history matters moving forward but I also know expecting the worse and not letting your guard down with hope makes it easier to accept the disappointment.
I am also an LA Kings fan and it took them 45 yrs to win a Cup. The sweet taste of victory was well worth the wait and if/when the Vikes finally get there will be just as sweet.

Yes, I agree. 2017 for the Eagles was a feeling you can't describe. The first one is special. If the Eagles win another one in my lifetime, it will be great, but won't be as emotional.
The Kings won in 2012 and it was crazy how emotional it was. They came back and won again in 2014 and it's just as special but for different reasons. The first being I was actually at the Cup clinching game this time and it was a double OT game winner that was scored right below my seats. It was the most emotionally draining sporting event I have ever been a part of. Absolutely incredible to be there.
In 2012, the Kings won as an 8th seed (before the stupid format they use now). It was totally unexpected and we had already booked a vacation to Cancun that we left the day of Game 6. I was hoping the Kings would sweep as I was at Game 3 and 4 but they lost game 4 and then game 5 to bring it back to LA for Game 6. I wanted to ditch the flight and stay but my wife was having non of it. Anyway, I didn't even get a chance to watch game 6 because nowhere in the entire resort did they have the feed for the game. I had to go to the business lounge and get on a message board for updates so it was a bit disappointing but I was able to watch it when I got home as I recorded the game.
So while the second win wasn't quite as "good" as the first win it was just as good and being there made it more memorable for me. I can only imagine what it will be like if the Vikes can ever pull it off.
The Vikes haven't even been to the Super Bowl in 48 years. In fact, the Vikings have never been to a Super Bowl since I have been a fan. Having been born and raised in California my fandom came about in a weird way. I never really had a favorite NFL team growing up. I liked the Chargers in the early 80s when I started following football because of their style of play but I wasn't really a "fan" so to speak. Then I started playing FF. We started in 1985 and our league required your team name to be an NFL team name. Since I didn't have a team we put a bunch of names in a hat and I pulled out the Vikings. So over the years I started acquiring hats, tee shirts, etc to wear at the draft. I eventually started wearing it around town and people would come up and ask about being a Vikings fan. I told them I wasn't and then had to explain FF to them because back then nobody knew what FF was. I got so sick of explaining what it was it just said **** It! I am going to be a Vikings fan.........and it has been misery ever since. But no turning back now. I am full in and can't wait to be rewarded someday. hahaha

Of the four major men's sports, the last MN team to make (not win) a championship game/series was the Twins in 1991. That is nearly 120 cumulative seasons of not even making it to the big game, let alone winning it.

I suppose this is offset by the adage of "ignorance is bliss" and if one has never been even close to the "promised land" it's not as painful as they don't even know what they're missing For that, we probably need a Browns' fan perspective or, until just recently, a Lions' fan's perspective.
But, the Vikings have had truly good teams and have been on the doorstep (the 70s, '98, '09, etc.). Using my analogy above, being a Vikings fan is like having the super hot girl put on some lingerie, call you over, smile and wink at you while inviting you in only to have her shut you down and laugh at you right as you climb into bed with her and go to remove her last article of clothing....
