Howdy all.  So, if you're not aware of the meaning of the topic, please move along.  If you are aware then I'm assuming either you have it or are close to someone who does...  That being said:

I've suffered from it for a good long while now.  And while it's much more manageable now as an adult, I know it was hellish as a teen.  Unfortunately, my 10yo daughter also has it.  She seems to have it even worse than I do and struggles with it on a daily basis.  I've scoured the internet, watched documentaries, talked to 'specialists', etc but there just doesn't seem to be an effective way to cope for a kid.  Especially for a kid who's stuck at school or daycare for ten hours out of every week day.

What works for me (removing myself from a trigger, putting headphones on, or bullying the trigger into ceasing whatever is setting me off) won't necessarily work for her.  She can't just get up from class and walk out.  She obviously can't wear headphones all day either.

I'm wondering if any of the other FBG faithful out there have kids who suffer the same and if so, have you come up with any other effective ways of helping your child cope?  Short of pulling her out of school altogether and homeschooling (which isn't an option), I'm at my wit's end.

TIA

I have a real bad case of misophonia.  Though I've never physically attacked anyone for being a loud eater, I've often wanted to.  I know that sounds insane to people who don't have misophonia, but anyone who does have it completely understands that response.  Eating sounds induce rage.   :hot:

I think I have a form of this.  My son hums all the time and it drives me absolutely nutty.  I've also gotten to the point where loud talking/loud TV also bothers me a good bit.  Hate it.

never heard the term before but i used the googles....does she have a particular trigger sound?

/sorry if it sounds ignorant

I have very lucid fantasies about taking a baseball bat to the woman who sits near me at work.  She chews gum on a regular basis and no matter how many times I ask her to keep it the ##### down, it never sticks.  I literally cannot describe the mind-melting rage that wells up.

My daughter's triggers range but are basically the usual.  Eating w/ mouth open.  Chewing loudly.  Popping gum or sucking loudly on a candy.  Whispering.  All the things the same things that set me off.

I know other's can't stand pen clicking or tapping sounds... those were never an issue for me.  All my triggers are generally 'mouth' related.

Like I said, I've learned to cope more or less and am free enough to remove myself from a trigger if it gets bad enough.  But my poor daughter can't and I'm desperate to find something to help her.

I found a good documentary on it called 'Quiet Please' on Amazon Prime.  We all sat down and watched it together and while it helped explaining the issue and was great to hear the depth and wealth of other people's experiences with it... it was light on coping mechanisms.  Especially coping mechanisms for kids.

I was happy just to be able to put a name to this affliction, which for me was adult-onset, sudden and somewhat (I think) severe. So far my main (only) coping mechanism is just leaving the room.  The difficulties I have are: a) not wanting my son to think I am "mad at him" or that its his fault, just because I get up and leave the dinner table whenever he starts eating; and 2) not wanting my wife to think I'm an ###hole by doing this (I am an ###hole for sure, but not because of this, I can't help it.)  Sitting on the couch watching a movie with my wife a couple weeks ago and she decides to eat an apple - its gameover for me, no chance I can stay in the room at that point.  "Don't pause it, I'll be back in a few minutes."

Can't take it

And it's only started bothering me recently
At my last job, we had a TV turned on to CNBC every day.  The noise of the talking heads was pretty obnoxious, but the commercials drove me insane.  They were always played at a much louder volume (which I think is illegal now) and were the same offenders.  We finally got everybody at the trade desk wireless speakers that they could use if they wanted sound, but only one dildo really opted to still listen and he would listen loudly.  One of us would turn his volume off when he'd get up to go to the bathroom or get coffee and he'd always whine.

Our TV in this place is never on unless we are watching sports.  CNBC has been banned.  The noise is just too much.

The sound of people sucking their fingers after eating chicken wings or saucy finger food makes me want to commit mass atrocities.  Soooooooo gross.  That sound sickens me to the core.
My most hated ads feature this kind of awfulness. Show the food, not the slobbering nimrods making us sick.

Closed captions are great if it stops the noise.

Then you've been spared from the ad they've been airing  a lot for the "Calm" app. Which is incredibly ironic, since it is just 30 seconds of rainstorm audio that makes me anything but calm. Here's the ad for anyone not worried about being triggered by it. https://www.ispot.tv/ad/wUht/calm-rain-storm
OOOOF....

There was one ad from the early 2000's that sent me over the edge more than any other.  It was for one of those cheesy collection of light rock albums that would play snippets of the songs they were pimping.  I can't believe that was ever a thing.  But it would play seemingly EVERY commercial break.  It featured Minnie Riperton's "Lovin You", which I now despise because of this stupid ad.  Hearing it now makes me stabby.

When a person pours a drink in a movie or TV show.  The sound just irritates the #### out of me.   The other sound is a plastic water bottle that is empty being played with and the crunchy sound.   Yep those people get a straight throat punch.

Huh.  I must have a mild case of this.  There are couple of ladies that work about 15-20ish feet behind me and for some reason they feel it's necessary to whisper to each other.  I think it's because, in the mornings, the office is pretty quiet and they don't want to be disruptive.  But it drives me crazy.  Popping gum is also a pet peeve, but I think that'd be true of most.

Loud chewers and tapping sounds I can deal with.

No option to move? I think if you typed the exact post above and presented it to your boss, accommodations would be made.

Cletius, I'd sit down with the missus and watch the 'Silence Please' movie or at least just show her the article from Wikipedia...  If it's bad enough were you HAVE to leave the room (as it is for many of us) then your loved ones need to know what you're going through and also that it's real and has a name.

Certain sounds do irritate me, but the repetition is what really sets me off. If I was held in a room that played "Paradise City" on a continuous loop, I would become a stark raving lunatic.

If had to stop my wife from doing certain things because she's making a repetitive noise and it's driving me nuts.

Wind chimes.  Random jingle jangle that makes me insane.  My MIL loves them.  When our neighbors moved, their chimes went with them.  Joyous day.

Would inserted ear plugs help your daughter?  I believe there are some that let lessen some sounds while allowing others through.
