Mitt Romney: Russia is America's #1 geopolitical foe (1 Viewer)

I do not think Romney is stupid a la Sarah Palin (despite my jab above), but I do no think that his mindset or thought process is correct for a president of a country. The country is not a business with the sole goal of turning a profit. And saying anything to get elected, changing your beliefs, accent, etc to just play to a crowd (and doing so poorly) does not reflect well IMO.
What should the mindset be? To lose money and go bankrupt? That seems to be the path we are set on, right?

Tim, we all know you will be voting for Obama; stop with the supporting Romney shtick.
No matter what happens, I will never vote for Barack Obama. But I could abstain from voting altogether, if Romney continues to pull this crap. (Not like my vote matters anyhow; my state is going for Obama in a big way.)

I continue to be surprised at how many people support this goober. I don't get it. What does he have over you people?
We need to cut the deficit. Obama has shown no sign that he realizes this. Neither has the House Republicans. I think Romney if elected will be able to use the Republican majority to actually engage in significant spending cuts for the first time in our history. I am not at all sure of this, but that is my hope. Second, I believe Romney as president will move us closer to real alternatives to oil, such as nuclear and natural gas. Obama has had the chance to do this and failed. Romney may succeed. Again, not sure of this, but that is my hope. Those are my main two reasons for supporting Mitt Romney for president. There is a lot I don't like about him. He seems sleazy to me. His rhetoric against China, and now against Russia, troubles me greatly. His conversion to social conservatism in order to win the election is bothersome (though I doubt it's genuine.) I don't like him in general. I like Obama. Obama seems like a really nice, really smart guy, and He's been an OK president. I would much rather know Barack Obama than Mitt Romney. But the two issues I listed are decisive for me and overwhelm everything else- IF Romney can really carry through on them.

I continue to be surprised at how many people support this goober. I don't get it. What does he have over you people?
He is not black and he doesn't have a D by his name.
Pathetic.
Finally we agree. It really is pathetic that the base of the GOP thinks like this. I really wish it was not true.
No....we most assuredly do not agree. Do you have any evidence that the whole GOP base thinks this way?
The whole base no (and I did not say that) but is there a segment that does.Let's take just one item like "Barack the Magic Negro" song.Rush Limbaugh for years played "Barack the Magic Negro" during his radio program and it was accepted by the masses that listen to his program. The song was even sent out on a CD as a Christmas gift to the GOP faithful. Fox News Channel displayed the following message in the news ticker at the bottom of the screen: "Happy New Year and let's hope the Magic Negro does a good job". Fox News later apologized for allowing it to be aired. I am sure they were sincere.

I'm sure Romney could find a way to make money off that.

Do Republicans really think there are only two options here?

Romney and Ryan have essentially the same economic plan. Neither reduces deficits as far or as fast as the current plan Obama is signed off on. They give away billions to the rich, destroy the social safety net and don't cut deficits. So those are the big cuts you are looking for? This is why we should elect Romney? On energy Obama has put forth loan guarantees to help build more reactors.
President Obama announced more than $8 billion in loan guarantees for two new nuclear reactors as part of his commitment to providing clean energy and creating new jobs.
Obama on natural gas:
"We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years, and my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy," he said. "Experts believe this will support more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade. America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk.”
He also supports fracking to get to gas. What is Romney going to do again that is so much more? I think you may need to do some studying.

I mean, honestly snarkiness aside, what you are insinuating is pretty insulting.Basically you are saying that since I support the GOP, I am a racist. Like I said before...pathetic. And by saying pathetic, I am actually talking about your bigoted viewpoints.

Wait. So if you don't support the black guy with the D by his name running the country right now you are a racist?
Meatwad1 and I are already discussing this. Is meatwad1 your alias?
David Axelrod is that you?

Thanks. Just another typical voter who doesn't support the black guy here.

I have LOVED Obama's rhetoric on nuclear energy and natural gas, especially before he took office. But he has not carried through. Whatever he puts in his budget is irrelevant, because the Republicans block him at every turn. Part of the reason I support Romney is because I believe he will get more things done with a Republican Congress.

Hmm. Politically, I think I'm relatively close to you. I tend to be fiscally conservative, but socially liberal and I'm starting to think that Romney would do worse for fiscal responsibility than Obama would. Primarily because there's no republican right now that will even consider raising taxes. At all. Looking at tax revenues/GDP its pretty easy to see that we're well below historical norm levels, due in part to the Bush tax cuts and in part to the recession. However, anyone with an R after their name seems to be preaching that we need to bring in even less in tax revenues (ignoring the trickle down stuff that likely has some effect at some level of tax rates, but that seems to be at much higher rates than we have now). I firmly believe that in order to get fiscal issues on the right track we need to cut military spending (and this idea will need to come from a republican), cut social spending (needs to be proposed by a democrat) and increase taxes (another republican proposal). I don't see a President Romney even considering either of the issues that will have to be proposed by a Republican. I don't see any of the republican candidates willing to go to those lengths, and in fact, I think any of the republican candidates will propose/encourage less taxes (which they already have done) and more military spending (based on their desire to attack Iran this seems pretty likely too). If that's the case, how are we going to get to the compromise needed to fix things? Obama has seemed at least willing to discuss cutting social programs, though not as much as I'd like to see.I have no idea where I'm going to vote in November, but Romney has a lot of convincing to do to get this Republican to cast his vote that way.

Well first off, I don't care about rewarding them. That's irrelevant to me. I'm looking at reality. If Obama is re-elected nothing will be done. If Romney is elected something along the lines of what I want to happen MAY be done. Those are my only choices.

You want to spend a lot less on the safety net and use that money for massive tax cuts while increasing military spending? That isn't going to cut the deficit.

Seriously what makes you think that? Ryan's plan blows a massive hole in the federal budget with it's 187K tax cut for millionaires and that's if they let the Bush tax cuts expire. Not to mention under Ryan's plan the national debt by 2022 would be 90 percent of GDP. By comparison Obama's budget would have it down to 76% by then. Still too high but going in a better direction.

Oh, there's plenty of goods Obama sold during his last campaign that he didn't deliver. I won't be voting for Obama again because he did indeed fail to walk the talk on too many things that were important reasons I voted for him the 1st time. But at least those were good ideas, and he sold them a heck of a lot better than Romney is his. Heck, maybe Obama even intended to so some/most of that stuff initially and then realized he couldn't pull it off when he actually made it into office. Reality is a #####. Obama is a much more believable flim flam man than Romney has been so far. Romney has been soooooooo hamfisted and obvious with the pandering, it's pathetic.

Well, I can't say you don't make good arguments. I am not impressed by Ryan's plan. I much prefer Simpson- Bowles. But it's irrelevent to bring up Obama's plan, because it won't happen. It's either Romney or nothing happens.

America will develop this resource without putting the health and safety of our citizens at risk."
He also supports fracking to get to gas. What is Romney going to do again that is so much more? I think you may need to do some studying.
So you are basically going to reward the Republicans for blocking anything Obama proposes even when he proposes their own ideas? And despite the fact that everything they have proposed goes against what you say you want? Nice
Well first off, I don't care about rewarding them. That's irrelevant to me. I'm looking at reality. If Obama is re-elected nothing will be done. If Romney is elected something along the lines of what I want to happen MAY be done. Those are my only choices.
Well, I can't say you don't make good arguments. I am not impressed by Ryan's plan. I much prefer Simpson- Bowles. But it's irrelevent to bring up Obama's plan, because it won't happen. It's either Romney or nothing happens.
So again you are rewarding obstruction.

He can't carry through on anything by himself. Why do people continue to fall for this tactic? It comes down to you liking his promises over someone else's. I still don't get it.

You just nailed Barrack HUSSEIN Obama to a tee.

So again you are rewarding obstruction.
Well first off, again, it's not like my vote matters. But I really don't think we can afford at this time to think that way. Right now, the House of Representatives is partly dominated by these crazy Tea Party #######s. If you've read me at all, then you know exactly what I think of them. If Obama is re-elected, these guys will become even more powerful, completely stopping everything Obama tries to do, and in 4 years we'll probably have a Tea Party POTUS, because the public will be sick and tired of gridlock and eager to get something done, even if it's the Tea Party way. On the other hand, if Romney wins, it's a victory for the more sane-minded among conservatives. It will weaken the Tea Party (since they can't stand him anyhow) and they will be forced to go along with his agenda (which is not theirs.)

I continue to be surprised at how many people support this goober. I don't get it. What does he have over you people?
I find it hilarious when all you bleeding heart liberals say stuff like the above when I can say the exact same thing about obama.

yes, his congress will support cutting taxes and increasing military spending, sending two of the three big ticket items needed to fix the budget in the wrong direction. Sure, they might manage to accomplish what they're looking to do, but will it help the situation?

I think it is so great when they use caps to try to illustrate that our president has the same name as a murderous dictator like somehow that fact is a negative - like in preschool when someone had the cooties.

These political threads are still a mess, not even sure anyone even commented on the original thought.

What Romney said is probably correct but there really is no reason to say it. Keep telling everyone China and various rogue nations are the enemy while doing the old "keep your friends close but your enemies closer" thing with the Russians.

:lmao: Holy crap.....classic. Go back and read my comments around Kerry, Obama, GWB etc etc and get back to me. What you minion "party line" guys fail to understand is that just because someone says something negative about repubs, it doesn't mean they are dems. If they say something negative about the dems, it doesn't mean they are repubs.Bleeding heart?? :lmao:

Based on Romney's actions of the past, I suspect he'll meet much resistance from the Tea Party if they are what they claim they are. It will be a true litmus test of whether they are really different than your run of the mill republican. They've played the part well so far, but was with a dem in place.

That's an interesting comment. Why do you think the Russkies are the biggest boogeymen? Vlad the Mad? Support for rogue middle eastern states? Other?

We need to get Palin back up to Alaska to keep an eye on these guys.

Their way of thinking and our way of thinking will always be at odds. They still control vast resources, military power and influence and even though they are a distant second in the Geo-political sphere, they are still second. They have also found a happy medium between communism and capitalism and have the ability to be stronger as a nation state than they were in the Soviet Union. With heavy-handed leaders like Putin who also understand the role resources and money play in the influence game, they are destined to be strong going forward. I simply don't trust Russians having known them over the years, they have a different way of approaching things and they are very underhanded as a whole.

The saddest part is that Romney's comment was made in an effort to garner support. The overarching problem isn't a single dumb remark by a politician, it's that dumb comments like these actually appeal to a significant portion of the electorate. How embarrassing.
McCain did the same thing with his comments about looking into Putin's eyes and seeing "KGB". Sure it's designed to appeal to a portion of the electorate, but it's not the eighties anymore. Some of these campaign advisers seems completely out of touch with what real voters want to hear. Why poke a stick at Russia when you can toss some barbs at Iran or North Korea or even China?

I like this answer and share many of your misgivings. But I think their weaknesses are too many for them to be anything but a nuisance: (1) hostile neighbors on every border commanding the bulk of their attention, (2) a national character all too prone to embrace the kind of daily corruption that prevents a nation from becoming great and (3) an over-dependence on natural resources as the basis for national wealth. I think that technological advances may render the Russians as geo-politically neutered as our friends around the shores of the Mediterranean. But they truly are bastards, yes they are.

I get where you are coming from DD and I share your sentiments about dealing with Russians. But have you ever dealt with Iranians? In my limited experience, they make the Russians look trustworthy and reliable.
