Mix Tape Draft for your Wake or End of Life - now underway (1 Viewer)

I drafted A Trick of the Tail before, said the same as you, and I think we've had this conversation before. I don't recall you mentioning freshman/sophomore year of college though that's xactly when I "really" discovered it, almost a decade after release. Road trip music. Now I listen.
That sounds familiar (so many drafts) ...I would have definitely dove on it.  However, it came out in Feb. '76 and my freshman year of college was that fall.  🧓

My birthday was this past Sunday, and someone sent me a book, which is an autobiography by Gregg Allman called My Cross To Bear. It came from Amazon, and I have no idea who sent it. Anyway, I'm glad I got to see him one last time in 2016 before he died. This song was one of Gregg's favorites, which is why he recorded it with the Allman Brothers and solo. This solo version is my favorite. This is my tip of the hat of growing up in the South.

18. Midnight Rider - Gregg Allman

finalist for my list as well.

thru the Simey prism, i see the plane upon which Gregg Allman & Karen Carpenter connect. we should all keep our cats out of the cold like you, my friend.

RD 20: Dark Horse - George Harrison

My first double-up.  Even before I was old enough to pay attention to know or figure out which Beatle wrote which song, I found I was almost always drawn to George's tunes.  There are several George songs that were in the running for this pick - I went with Dark Horse because it's not only a great song - it carries a lot of meaning to me.

#7 Bob Seger - Still The Same

There's the part of me that think I was too judgmental as a 20-something.  But there's the other part of me that thought I was just doing a better job prioritizing the sort of people in which I surrounded myself.  Not-like minded, but - just good people.  Probably a product of the ever-increasing time crunch.  You don't notice it as much when you're first getting hitched (if you chose a good one anyway), but kids?  Free time's at a premium, so you don't want any of the little of it that you have to go wasted.  So for those that fell victim, I just turned and walked away - I had nothing left to say.

Looks like I skipped round 19 ...

RD 19: Come Down In Time - Elton John

Beautiful, beautiful song.  Another memorable song on Tumbleweed Connection.  It's weird that for as many songs that I love from this guy, that if I had to pick only two - they would both be off the same album ...and I may like "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" more, but they are such different albums.  I listen to both quite a bit still.

The hardest part about Elton John for me has been picking one.  I'm still not sure one will make the cut and I kinda want to punch myself in the face.

I had the Moondance album on vinyl, cassette, and disc. I remember back in '93 seeing Van Morrison in San Jose with a friend. A few days later I had to fly back home, and I had a connecting flight in Texas. I remember sitting in the airport and the front page of a newspaper in a rack read "Burn Baby Burn." It was the day after the Davidian compound went up in flames in Waco. I don't know why I remember that.

20. Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

Wow, simey. I can't like that post because of what it entails, but that sure is interesting, down to the headline title. Hope the show was good.

The show was great. It was the first and only time I've ever seen him live. I saw Stanley Jordan during that same trip in a small nightclub. He was fascinating on the guitar.

#8 Rascal Flatts - Fast Cars & Freedom

I had a very difficult time narrowing down what song to choose to symbolize deciding to spend the rest of my life with someone.  Jane's Addiction Three Days aptly describes our first date, but I didn't want two Jane's songs on the mix and at 11 minutes it'd have killed my time budget - even though it may be the greatest song ever made.  Our Lady Peace's The end is where we begin would be appropriate.  It was the first concert we attended together and the day we conceived our oldest.  Question by The Old 97's was our first dance at our wedding.  Two Kenny Chesney songs (Young and American Kids) come to mind as well.  But this is the one that causes a crooked grin to come over my face whenever it's played, regardless of circumstances.  I'd like to go out with that same stupid grin on my face.

You don't look a day over fast cars and freedom
That sunset river bank first time feeling...

RD 22:  In My Life - The Beatles

This one was picked by wikkid in the first round.  I wanted to include as many different ones as I could, but I think this one would be included in most people's choices.

I will be listening to all the songs posted in here to try and come up with something for my sister this week.

She was a huge Motown Fan, Dusty Springfield,  Beatles, other boomer lib feminist-appealing stuff

Haven't had the time to participate in these drafts in a while but, had I seen this, I would've hopped in. I will probably post a full list once the official draft is done.

#10 Aerosmith - Livin' On The Edge

The rest of this playlist is with the present tense in mind.  Like so many other instances throughout this play list I could decide an artist, but had trouble between two or three songs.  And I could see future MAC selecting Amazing or Sweet Emotion.  But, right now - it's this one.  Because I imagine I'm not much different than many 30's something's that are (hopefully) done having kids.  I'm in that weird place between understanding I don't know anything while also realizing most others are the same - only they don't realize it, nor will they probably ever.  Time spent reading about (but for the most part not discussing) politics is increasing at a rapid pace.  More of my core beliefs are starting to be penned in ink rather than scribbled with pencil, so songs like this one I played to death then forgot about have recently resonated and carry a different meaning than they did when I first listened.

There's somethin' wrong with the world today
I don't know what it is
Something's wrong with our eyes

We're seein' things in a different way
And God knows it ain't his
It sure ain't no surprise

There's somethin' wrong with the world today
The light bulb's gettin dim
There's meltdown in the sky

If you can judge a wise man
By the color of his skin
Then mister you're a better man than I

If chicken little tells you that the sky is fallin'
Even if it wasn't would you still come crawlin'
Back again
I bet you would my friend
Again and again and again and again and again

Well said, Mr. Tyler.  Well said.  Oh, and if you can get through this part...

Something right with the world today
And everybody knows it's wrong
But we can tell 'em no or we could let it go
But I'd would rather be a hanging on

...followed by the three belts on that bass drum without an internal fist pump then you have no soul.

Jane's Addiction - Stop!

Green Day - F.O.D.

Chris Cornell - Can't Change Me

Pearl Jam - Rear view mirror

Dropkick Murphy's - Flannigan's Ball

Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road

Bob Seger - Still The Same

Rascal Flatts - Fast Cars & Freedom

Neil Young - Old Man

Aerosmith - Livin' On The Edge

---

#11 I see as peak political.  The question then becomes, what?  Foo Fighters Pretender is intentionally vague enough.  Anti-Flag's Press Corpse isn't.  I chose Old Man over Rockin' In The Free World. I don't really want Rage Against The Machine on the playlist.  So...

Mesmerized the simple minded
Propaganda leaves us blinded.

...that line, so simple - and ultimately what this is and always will be.  System of a Down - Hypnotize

So, why exert/waste so much time and energy on something that you ultimately will never influence unless you also decide to target the simple minded?

Enter, #12 Live - White, Discussion

I talk of freedom
You talk of the flag
I talk of revolution
You'd much rather brag
And as the decibels of this disenchanting discourse
Continue to dampen the day

The coin flips again and again, and again, and again
As our sanity walks away
All this discussion though politically correct ( :lmao: )
Is dead beyond destruction
Though it leaves me quite erect

And as the final sunset rolls behind the earth
And the clock is finally dead
I'll look at you, you'll look at me
And we'll cry a lot
But this will be what we said
This will be what we said

Because when all is said and done and our time has come to an end what exactly was accomplished?

Look where all this talking got us, baby

Exactly.

So, let's finish this thing on my terms...

Looks like this thread it pretty dead (pun intended) and I went with wake because all Kevorkian's disciples would need to play would be:

I Wanna Be Sedated - The Ramones

and

Golden Brown - The Stranglers

as they were helping me shuffle off the mortal coil.

Wake required a little thought. I mean, am I dead tomorrow or 50 years from now? The audience is quite a bit different depending. Is it an audience of youth? Old age? Wife? Kids? Grandkids?

Enjoy Yourself - Specials

Kill Your Heroes - AWOLNATION

Try - Mandy Harvey

Out of Time Man - Mick Harvey

Knowledge - Operation Ivy

Youth - Daughter

Come Along - Cosmo Sheldrake

Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Wax and Wire - Loch Lomond

With or Without You - U2

By My Side - INXS

Fade Into You - Mazzy Star

Drive - The Cars

Don't Look Back in Anger - Oasis

There is a Light that Never Goes Out - Smiths

Just Like Heaven - The Cure

As the 30-40 some odd people attending arrive, mingle, and find safe seating arrangements in the little glass chapel overlooking the Pacific...

1. Mozart Lacrimosa - Appropriate music while no one is paying attention. I listened to classical daily for 20+ years and Wolfgang is still my guy.
2. Ennio Moriconne Ecstasy of Gold - Sorrow, joy, longing, love, lust...ecstasy... it's all here. It will put them in their seats. And those that know the movie was used as background noise for me 100+ times will grin.

I'm dead. What better time to be selfless? I doubt I'll hear it so most of this is chosen for loved ones. First the departed.

3. Whitney Houston  Amazing Grace - My agnostic father loved Whitney to the point of awkwardness in the 80s and sang this song daily as he did what he did.
4. Frank Sinatra We'll Be Together Again - My mom joined hundreds of others by fainting at his show. My father lived in jealousy of Old Blue Eyes. This one will bring tears.

5. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Time to remind the nieces and nephews that it's Uncle Chaos's funeral. There's laughter but... my youngest sis is annoyed and shaking her head.
6. Josh Groban Granted - It's doubtful Josh has a bigger fan than sis #4. We had row 5 seats a few months ago. This song "never take a breath for granted" works if not sadly cheesy. It's her current favorite. She'll know it's for her.
7. Elton John Your Song - Saw him with sister #3 twice in two nights in the same Vegas venue. She's loved him forever, so this is Her Song.
8. Elvis Presley Teddy Bear - Sis 2 loves Elvis 4evah, and we have 8mm of me doing my best impersonation... at age 10 ... directly to her. This memory will get her.
9. The Mamas and The Papas California Dreamin' - My oldest sis lives musically in the 60s, loves this song; and three times her career moved her from the Golden State, she scrambled tirelessly to come home. My California Girl.

9 to go. I think.

My brother, the oldest, probably figures the next one is for him, but I like messing with him. All three of these are for my daughter - single dad,  I raised her from diapers to university by myself...

10. Tyler The Creator Find Your Wings - She's seen him four or five times. She suggested it. I love his Tiny Desk if you have interest.

11. Bob Marley No Woman No Cry - When she was a crying infant making me insane, I changed this to No Baby No Cry and it became our little thing. No Woman because that what she be.

12. Green Day Good Riddance - The song title is too funny and she loved Green Day as a teen. The lyrics more than make up for the title - from me to her:

Another turning point,
a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist,
directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable,
but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs and still-frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable,
but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable,
but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable,
but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life

13 Disturbed Sound of Silence  My brother is also stuck in oldies. He'll know its for him... and me. If you haven't seen that yet, you're welcome. My favorite vocalist lately.

14 Simon Linsteadt Vulture - I had a childhood best friend. His son is the writer and performer of this beautiful song. Hopefully his dad will be there.

14 Elvis Costello The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes - "I won't get any older cuz the angels wanna..." And all the college buddies smile.

15 Genesis Ripples - My bff in college introduced me to A Trick of the Tail. So many road trips, good times good times. This is for you, Patattack. Please don't get high in the chapel. "gone to the other side... ripples never come back..."
