MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

We are doing great again. We are missing one from Round 14 - ACP. And only a couple from Round 15

Round 15
Mrs. Rannous
Steve Tasker
The Dreaded Marco
AhrnCityPahnder
rockaction

@KarmaPolice, are we doing Round 16 @ 4:00?

I picked a Spanish song last round and am going to double down on that with this pick.

Gipsy Kings - Bye Bye (Ella Me Dice Vay)

The way that these guys play the Spanish guitar is excellent but what really draws me to them is the flamenco style of singing.
Big difference in the music scene between the 80s and now.  Back then, a group like this could get wide enough exposure to go Platinum in this country.  If they came out now, their talent would still allow them to be heard but it would be to a micro-niche audience.

Another reason to be grateful to the 80s then!

Add it to the list right below the Hair Bands contribution.

16.12 Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians - So You Think You're in Love

Hitchcock is usually much weirder than this.  The Egyptians were his most mainstream group and this song isn't odd in the least.  It was his biggest hit deservedly hitting #1 on the US alternative or modern or college charts in 1991.  He broke up the band after the next album.

Not trying to argue but I am curious as to why do you say this? I would say the exact opposite. In the 80's, I was limited to what I heard on the radio, MTV, or Casey Kasem's Top 40 etc. etc. Some of my favorite bands got very little mainstream coverage (Violent Femmes, Pixies, The Smiths off the top of my head). Now, we have the ability to sample 1000s of songs on Youtube/Spotify, share music across the world instantaneously, Shazam any random song I hear, and even AI programs that can suggest music that you might like based on your current library of music. What we are doing now in this thread would be literally impossible in the 1980s.

I will agree that it may be harder for a band to go platinum now - but not due to lack of exposure. I think we are in a second era of singles. This is kind of interesting because the first era of singles was due to technological limitations and this era is due to technological advancements.

flow-busta deeeeeluxe...

but I'm in the mood right now so #### it.

I played piano- took lessons- until I was 18. I was semi-serious about it (not as serious as my teacher would have liked), with recitals, HS orchestra and local competitions. This was one of the last songs I played- and the last song I played that wasn't mozart or bach (mach, so to speak). tons of fun to play and so different than those guys- my favorite ending to a piece ever. oh... so the improv on bach- b-a-c-h represent a different notation system and are each notes that make up the main theme of the piece that you'll hear repeated throughout (in both hands) and are the opening 4 notes.

16... Valse Improvisation sur le nom de Bach... Francis Poulenc

Fair point.  I was probably being overly nostalgic.  The Gipsy Kings mass popularity in the US was more a happy accident than a reflection of the times.  I do recall them getting big promotion from their US label.

And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doin' here?"

Oh, la la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

Just realized that I wanted to do a "spinner" pick ("We talkin' about practice man") to tie back to my round 15 selection instead of that Cinderella pick.

Speaking of hair bands...been sitting of this one for a bit.

16.xx - Cinderella - Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)

Round 16

Until The End Of The World - U2

Lots of U2 already taken but this is by far my favorite on the Achtung Baby album.

16.03 - Run the Jewels (feat. Zachary de la Rocha), Close Your Eyes (And Count to F**k) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkGwI7nGehA

My favorite newer rap/hip-hop act right now.  Having Zachary in it makes for a great fit with my mix and helps me get over not having any Rage on my list.
Love these 3 picks.  Had all of them in my mind since the start of this draft.

Are we just doing one pick a day over the weekend?
I've been waivering about finishing up over the weekend, but let's stay with the plan as it is now so we are all around and posting mixes on Monday.

Sat = Round 17

Sun = Round 18

Monday = Rounds 19 & 20 & listening to mixes!

Alright, I will stop being a stubborn weenie and take the song I had written down from the start and passed it over b/c it was mentioned.  Fits the mix too perfectly...

16.xx:  THE CLASH - I'M SO BORED WITH THE U.S.A.

15.23 - Beastie Boys, The Skills to Pay the Bills - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJgCfP98TVQ

A bit of a sneaky pick since it's a B side to So Watcha Want and for some reason only made the deluxe version of Check Your Head. It's a great tune and I've seen them do it in concert a couple times so I think it was a live favorite of theirs. It's listed in a few places without the first The, but the official version has 6 words.

Here's the Spotify version in case it's hard to find - https://open.spotify.com/track/40IeRufLQe3vruKtqYBM4m
I used to listen to this all the time. There was an old VHS tape I had with it on it, IIRC.

Awesome pick. As soon as I saw it on the sheet my heart sank knowing I'd forgotten about it.
