MixTape Draft - Back to School edition. Make your picks and post your mix! (1 Viewer)

It does look like there are a handful of people that would like it pushed back a little bit, so how about we delay it for 1 week and start on the 10th?  I am not sure if that would change things for @simey, as last draft was about 2weeks long and that would fit in between her dates she listed.
That would work with me. Is Easter going to interfere with anyone's time?

I'm pretty insane at work and have only had a chance to listen to a handful from the last mix at this point.  I also kinda don't understand the theme.

I can probably participate if the date gets pushed back to the 10th like KP indicated.  Easter won't be an issue for me....I'll probably be working all day that day anyway.

Yeah, let's push it to the 10th if that gets more people like simey, rockaction and Tasker in.   Gives me a week to maybe think of something else, as my class as it is now might be a tad depressing.

Gives us more time for obsessive research, get questions answered, listen to the last draft's mixes, etc..  I will do the draft order sometime next week so we know a few days ahead of time where we are drafting.  If Easter is an issue we can discuss that too.  I figured we would do our usual 1 pick/day over the weekends.

@Steve Tasker - ask any specific questions if you want or send a PM if this doesn't clear it out.

It's pretty general - songs that have to do with school, teachers, specific courses, etc..

My original intent/idea was for us to be teachers and the mix was our "syllabus".  We could use any subject that you would find at any level of school.  Example = if you were going to do a Math mix, you could do songs with numbers, equations, have math terms in the title/lyrics, on and on.   People have hinted that they want to do multiple subjects for their mix, and that is fine. It's also fine if you want to draft and incorporate songs with school terms in the lyrics/songs - college, fraternity, recess, teacher, etc..   this is pretty wide open.

The one thing that wasn't the intent the draft (I might have even mentioned it, adding to confusion) is songs that you listened to in school or heard at a party or something.

Honestly I'm not terribly excited about this "theme" - but these drafts are always fun and I enjoy hearing music I did not know about before.
The scheduling is bad for me so I'm still out.

My preference for future drafts is to have themes that are a bit less nerdy and less like a scavenger hunt.  For a change of pace, I think we should return to a genre-based theme for the next one (e.g. punk as #### draft, soft rock draft redux).  I also would like to see mixes capped at 10-15 songs rather than 20 but I always lose that battle.

IMO this has opened up enough that you probably could draft damn near any song and fit it to a "subject":

Say I draft Paranoid Android.  (sorry for spotlighting).  I could use that for a bunch of stuff:

Psychology (Paranoid in the title)
Zoology (lyrics mentions chicken and piggy)
Meteorology (lyrics mention rain)
Anatomy (has head in the lyrics)
Criminal Justice (mentions cutting off a head in lyrics)

I get that.  I have oodles of time, so I usually like and come up with the scavenger hunt ones because they make me dig a little deeper to find something that fits.  I get lazy during genre drafts and it turns into more of a 'greatest hits' thing for me.

Also agree with you a bit on the length of the mixes, but usually focus on the time vs. # of songs.  I just have in my mind that a tape is 90mins, but when we have 25 drafters that is a day and a half of music to listen to if you want to try to listen to mixes.  I know I always go overboard for these things (have I mentioned I have a lot of time on my hands? ;) ) and have an assload of songs on my lists so I want to draft as many as I can.  But if we actually want to listen to the mixes, we probably should cap it at 60min or under OR do less of these.

I'd argue the opposite.  I really enjoyed the long title draft and mixes so I'm not trying to criticize but my thought process was:  (a) I need long titles (b) I like band X (c) let's see what long titles band X has (d) repeat for artist Y (e) make mix.

For me at least, genre drafts provide more opportunities for obscurities.  If we did the punk as #### draft and had a draft lasting a couple of weeks, I'd almost certainly steer clear of the popular classics and dig deep in the crates.

We definitely need to mix it up then, as I am sure people feel the way you do too.  I think for me it depends on the genre.  If it's something like punk, I would be sticking to greatest hits to not look like an idiot since I don't know much from the genre (I don't like to take stuff from bands I haven't heard of in drafts).  If we are doing 80s hair metal, I am digging deeper.

Fair point.  So how about this?

Decide as a group on 4 or 5 genres.  Have a two round draft to choose two genres each with some limits so everybody doesn't pick the same ones.  I might have punk and rap, while you have metal and rap.  Run through the draft per usual with everybody building two separate ten song mixes--one for each of their selected genres.  Nobody gets stuck with a genre they don't know about.  More obscurities drafted by subject matter experts.  Still some sniping.  More mixes to listen to but shorter and more tightly structured ones.

This is for the next one, BTW.

I had an artist (Bob Seger) who has 2-3 songs for 4 different subjects but isn't on Spotify. Does that mean I can't draft them ? A couple have cover versions but 80% are not on at all.

Other's have taken songs not on spotify.  It's not a requirement for the drafts, just something that we gravitated towards over time since most seemed to use and like it and it's easy to load up our mixes as a playlist.

Picking 4 or 5 genres will be the biggest shit fight ever. The concept is good though. If we had eg 20 drafters and 10 genres, that would be 4 mixes per genre following the rest of your idea through. 10 song mix would be 400 songs drafted.

since people are choosing 2 from the 4-5 genres, nobody would be getting forced into anything.  We could have everybody nominate one genre and then use a dice roll to narrow it down to 4-5.  Show tunes FTW.

I liked Eephus' dominos draft idea, but since we are throwing additional draft ideas up...

What about a draft where you cannot use released singles?

(Using Wikipedia or Discogs or ??? to determine if a song was released as a "single")

Ideas are great, and yours is too, but someone has to commish them.

Kp is running the next one, school one, then eephus has 2 ideas to choose between and i have one locked and loaded ready to go. If they are of the mixtape variety, there needs to be sufficient listening time between drafts. If a desert island draft is run, a mixtape can follow shortly after.

Considering the pool of drafters we havent had a movie draft in a long time as well.

Rap, Metal, Rock, Pop, Electronica, country, blues, punk, techno, classical, jazz, punk, funk, soul, gospel, new wave, world, reggae etc

Each of us have our preferences. Agreeing to 4 or 5 genres, will result in Rock, pop, jazz/blues, punk and rap or metal. Lots of great genres can't be used. The dice roll idea is a wild card, in a good way. If we had 20 drafters and someone chose eg Tasmanian yodel music that would be interesting

What about one genre of drafters choice and one from the pool?

Just offering suggestions, if you commish it, you run with your idea as you see fit.

Can't commit right now but will certainly be checking back to see if I can do it.  I already have a theme idea.  Otherwise, I'll watch. :)   P.S., great idea.
Cool, I told Eephus the same thing - you are welcome to jump in later, or just post a link to a mix at the end if you can't do the actual draft.

Nice - I updated the list of interested parties and it looks like we have 18 down for the draft, and 2 ??s (Floppo and AA?)

Question:  Do we chance it with similar mixes and sniping, or would people like it if the drafter PMd me with their ideas so at least I know if there are going to be issues (ie - 5 people doing all drafts about history)?

Not sure how secretive people's drafts are going to be, especially if they are focused on song titles, but thought I would throw it out there is somebody is at the end of the draft and think they might struggle if there are people doing a similar thing.

Thank you for remembering me, but we just moved (well last Wednesday) and we're up to our ears in boxes and my garage looks like something from Hoarders.

I'll follow and be checking in while at work (where I can get some rest!)

@Hov34

1. Where did you move to?

2.  I will tell you the same thing as AA and Eephus.  If you get the urge, feel free to jump in whenever with some picks, or just link a mix at the end of the draft.

This might just be the gin and lime juice talking, but I would just like a quick rant on the power of the FFA music drafts.

Tonight I was imbibing and listening to Songs in the Key of Life (for the first time in full) :bag: and Stop Making Sense (drafts lead to my obsession with Talking Heads).  Multiple times throughout the night I was just giggling to myself and thought "music has no business being this ####### good".

:banned:

Can't wait for this one to fire up.  Sadly, I have an uber :nerd: mix all done and ready to go.  Better not be any damn sniping... yeah, I am talking to you @Yo Mama

Had a real nice gin martini earlier today. Need to some tunes going and start thinking about this.

Yep. Start the 10th.  I will get together a draft order on Wed/Thurs or so..

How was the drunken classic movie night for you and the misses?
Good. She made it through 3 movies paying half attention. She has to work tomorrow so she went off to bed. I kept the drinks and movies going because tomorrow is day 1 of spring break for me.

Totally jealous.  Wife has 0 interest in watching movies with me, so I have to bully the kid into it..

Yeah, my wife usually isn't really into it either. Like I said, it was more about the drinks and food for her. Not that I can say anything because I am the same way, but she was on her phone half the time. And while I don't want a kid, I would love to have one to force to watch movies with me.

lol, I might. I can't do what NV does though. He's got his own thing going.

High school teacher.
@Ilov80s - what subject?  I wonder if I missed my calling as a teacher.  Ultimately probably don't have the patience for a whole class of kids, so ultimate props to you.

Also, how old are you, if you don't mind me asking..

The first question is slightly complicated, my major was special education- emotional impairment and minor was history. I have a masters in educational technology. I have taught almost every subject at some point.  So I have 4 roles in my school. I teach a history class, manage a special ed caseload, help students with disabilities in algebra and chemistry and work with  teachers to help them use technology in class.

Teaching is fun IMO, great job but like you said, patience is essential.

Really?  That sucks.  Mr R and I love to watch movies (and documentaries).  I can't imagine not doing that with him.
Honestly can't remember the last movie we watched together.  There are circumstances that lead to that fact, but I think it's been years.  I think the last thing we watched together was True Blood (when that was still on the air).  :bag:

I think we should wing it.  Although limiting the topics a little would be helpful.
Agreed, I'm trying to stay flexible for a bit.

Same.  The last non-kids movie (which we could link to here) my wife and I watched together was probably Titanic.  It's been a few years since we watched the "other adult variety" too. :(

I went to school to be a teacher. I have my bachelor of Education and I'm certified with the teachers governing board and union (high school English and history are my teachable subjects) but I can't see ever pursuing it. It was pretty clear to me doing my in-class training that it wasn't for me.

I always had an inkling I might not like it, so I was working towards a business degree at the same time and I went that route when I graduated. I'd like to combine my business experience and my teaching qualification at some point as a college business teacher.

Just 20 minutes away.  Closer to Nashville, cuts my wife's drive in half.  We have had access to the house for about 3 weeks.  Small trips here and there taking stuff.  Problem was we didn't label things well and when the big move came (movers) the other stuff got buried.  Wait, where are my keys?

I'll definitely comment and try to put together a Spotify list.

Page 3 bump just for a reminder that we are going to do this.  I don't expect many people to jump on, so I will probably do the draft order tomorrow just so we have something to look at and talk about.
