Monday Injury Debriefing (1 Viewer)

Thanks again Jene, extremely helpful information.

Regarding Shady, you said:

"LeSean McCoy was reportedly still fatigued and not himself some time after his concussion yesterday. That doesn’t guarantee that he’ll have trouble progressing through the return-to-play algorithm in time to play..."

Where you referring to the reports that desribe McCoy as:

"Squinting, and unsteady on his feet, McCoy didn’t seem to know anyone or what he was doing post-game."

To the novice medical person it also seems extreme for them to bring out a cart to take him off the field, which suggests that they were not sure he could walk competently at the time. Can you really recover quickly from that severe a concussion?

In general, I think it's reasonable to assume that concussions with symptoms that last longer than 15-30 minutes will take longer to recover from than those with symptoms that resolve within minutes and that a player who still has symptoms 48-72 hours after injury can be considered out for an extended period. But the right way to think about head injury is that no two are alike. In my personal experience, I've seen players who have been unconscious for two minutes have no symptoms the following day. I've also seen players who didn't exhibit any obvious symptoms until well after the injury not be back to baseline for days to weeks.

The NFL mandates that a player evaluated for a head injury be taken into the quieter locker room environment. McCoy wasn't going to be able to walk there easily or quickly, so they used the cart.

 Thanks man, good stuff.

Jene,

Have you heard about any correlation between increased mid foot sprains or concussions and the stadiums going to field turf?

Have seen rumblings about the lower leg injuries, but nothing specific on concussions. It's something I plan to search the literature more closely for during the offseason. Just haven't had time to do a dedicated look yet. If anyone has seen anything in the media more than an anecdotal discussion, I'd much appreciate any links.
