Most Overrated Cuisine (1 Viewer)

I'd say Italian. We have an Olive Garden in our town and it's not that great really, although unlimited breadsticks are a tradition I wish other cultures would adopt.

Ethiopian

I'm not convinced Ethipiopians are actually starving. They just don't want to eat that crappy food.
Ethiopian food is some of the best stuff out there, dammit.

It's very tasty but the lack of texture (or maybe the lack of variety in texture) is kind of a turn-off for me. Nothing crunches or snaps or takes much in the way of chewing. It's just flavorful but mushy stews with non-descript injera bread. There are some cuisines that I could eat just about every day but Ethiopian food isn't one of those.

I'm basing this on a sample of 3-4 places I've been to in SF, not the entire Horn of Africa so don't go hijack my boat to avenge the insult.

That post made me spit out my soda.

German food is pretty disgusting.
Used to think this until a trip to Germany with some locals who took me to good places. Now I look for German places when I'm traveling for work to eat at.

Great beer and usually really cool atmospheres.
Without a doubt. And it's hard to beat a bavarian pretzel. Toss in some beer wench wearing those short cut blouses and a skirt and it'd be a great place to hang out.

But if I want some actual meal, german food is way down my list compared to other ethnic options.

I can't believe I'm doing this but :goodposting:

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's disgusting, but I find it really bland. I like schnitzel, but spaetzle is blah.
Plus, it's not prevalent, so it can't be overrated. "hey honey, let's hit the German restaurant for dinner tonight"
If it was any good, you would be saying that
I agree, but my point is... there are no German restaurants.
Metzgers in Ann Arbor and Richters in Dearborn

I love Italian food, but Olive Garden makes me think twice about that.
That's not Italian food, that's American Italian processed/microwaved food. Not knowing the difference might be more sad than going to Olive Garden in the first place. I went for the first time in 15 years recently and found almost nothing on the menu that actually resembles something you would get in Italy.

They rarely fry calamari in Italy and when they do it isn't all breading, there is no such thing as Lasagna fritti or fettuccine alfredo, and chicken Parmigiana is fairly difficult to find. Italian food is so good because the tomatoes, cheese, and the vegetables are all fresh. In the U.S. it is very difficult to find good Italian food beyond the major cities, because a real Italian restaurant requires quite a bit of work. Stuff like Passatelli, Tortellini Pastacciati, and Saltimbocca are the best Italian dishes and are difficult or even impossible (Passatelli) to find here.

I don't think I've ever met someone who has been to Italy that didn't like the food. Why? Because it's the best cuisine in the world. The French are second, everyone else is way behind and our versions of those foods are as bastardized as we are. NTTATWWT.

Places with terrible food: England is the worst, Romania and some of the Eastern European countries also can be bad. Ireland is England light, the people have terrible teeth because they'd rather eat pavement than eat the gruel served there.

I used to be a non-believer as well. Then I had some good schnitzel and spatzle with some fried potatoes. A bit of sausage with spicy mustard. I may have to go to a place this weekend now!

The place I go has no hot beer wench unfortunately.

I've gotten much better food in places like Mozambique, Central African Republic, and Tchad than I ever got in England. I mean their food is just so crappy and when they try to copy something, that sucks too. London of course has great food because none of it is English, but eat in small towns and try not to get sick after a few beers. Burnt, no flavor, like Applebees only 50 times worse. I like the Brits, but their weather and food really do suck.

It took me a coupe of years living in Germany to appreciate the food. Not my favorite because they specialize in pork and I don't dig swine as much as others do, but German food can be very good. Flammkuchen is great, Sauerbraten is solid fare, and the Germans really make great pastries. Not my favorite cuisine, but it's pretty good IMO.

Also the Eastern Europeans do well with soups and stews, which I love. Sweden, Norway and Finland have good fish. As does Spain.

Similiar to an english breakfast I imagine.

Too heavy for me, I would probably throw up. I know my sister and husband wont like it either because they have been on a health kick for a while.

The most overrated cuisine is American semifast chain food. Applebees, Chillis, Olive Garden, TGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesdays, etc. Only time I go to these places is when I'm in Michigan visiting my family, and it's not because I want to go. I seriously like microwave dinners better, not shtick. I really don't see a big difference except places like Olive Garden give you portions for three people and wonder why we have so many fat pigs.

We are less fat than Saudis though!!!!!! Take that!

They have Olive Garden and most of the others in Saudi lmao

Fridays years ago before it became a true corporate chain was pretty good IMO, but that was years ago. They closed the one down here years ago, and there is no other restaurant that serves food, beers and booze up until 1 am here anymore. :kicksrock:

I do like fish and chips from time to time, and I hear they're much better in England, but I wouldn't know personally...I was in London once when I was 16, and the food was awful, but I never tried fish and chips.

Well yeah, the fish and chips are great and that really is probably their most famous dish.

But fish and chips is pretty hard to screw up if you have a deep fryer and some vinegar.

I like the small local places wherever I live in the states. I think diners up in northern Michigan where my cabin is are just awesome. Why? Because none of their stuff gets frozen, all the stuff is for that day or a few days anyway. I like going to a restaurant that often runs out of stuff. That means the stuff is probably fresh! They basically use fresh stuff and mix in some cans, but frozen is unlikely because of the sheer space freezing food requires. Ever been in the back of an Applebees? The freezers take up more room than the dining area does.

And I wanted to say there are good Italian American restaurants too. I love places with Italian Steak sandwiches for example, and lasagna and pizza are pretty much good from Italy to Stouffer's microwave. Not only did I live in Italy but I lived in Naples and pretty close to Bologna, which are considered the "forks" of Italy. Basically the centers of Italian cuisine. So I'm snobby about it, but also love to find great places in the states which do exist.

Not sure who rates these places high.

Never been to Italy. Best Italian food I've had in my life has been in New York's Little Italy and in San Francisco's North Beach. Of course, southern California has some awesome Italian fine dining as well. My favorite dish is veal picatta. Also Caesar salad.

I think the cars in the parking lot tell the story.

I had fish and chips in London. The chips were meh, but the way they perfectly fried a large haddock fillet with a light crispy batter was truly impressive.

Piccata originated in italy.

Caesar Cardini was italian american so technically the salad is an american invention.

Um, no. Veal picatta is an American dish from the 30s. Ceaser salad is a Mexican construct.

I was wrong about both

Yeah I never saw Chicken Parm in Italy but they have something called Parmegiana. I'm not sure it's even meat though, although I think in Sicily they use that term for leftovers that include meat. Italian leftovers are awesome because they use all the stuff from the previous couple of days (or like after a party because they don't leave many leftovers) and then prepare whatever fresh ingredients they have to make a meal. It's not stuff you'd ever get at a restaurant, just a mash of goodness.

This is why I like Mexican food I think, they do similar things. "Caldo" is all the extra stuff from the day before made into a soup. Best hangover food ever, rightens the ship.

I will say this about German/Austrian/Czech food. It's good, but the best 2 restaurants I are in those places were Italian and Asian.

I knew about Caesar, but since the best Caesar salad I've ever had was at an Italian restaurant (Caffe Pinocchio in San Francisco, right next to the City Lights bookstore) I thought I'd mention it.

I did not know that Picatta was American.

Actually according to Wiki, Veal Piccata did originate in Italy. The chicken version (which is nearly as good) originated here.

You can't convince the family to go to a good local Michigan restaurant?

Sorry, Tim, but you crack me up. After bashing American food, you are now turning to Wiki to prove that your favorite Italian dish isn't, in fact, American. And after you say that your favorite Italian dish is "also" Caesar salad, you claim to have known all along that it's not an Italian dish when pointed out to you.
