Welp that'll do it. WW scores.
Nothing beats Clemens Stadium. Sports Illustrated rated it the 6th best overall place to watch a game of any level.Love watching Div III football. If no one has to been to a live Div III game, I strongly suggest it. Great atmosphere. When UCONN is away I always try to catch a Trinity or Wesleyan game.
Yet they get a 2 seed#2 Mount Union won 49-0 over St. Lawrence in the opening of the D3 playoffs today.
#1 Wisconsin Whitewater won 52-21 over Franklin
Could be another repeat title game this year.

Seems like a thread title change might be needed.

To be fair, Franklin gave them a game. It was a 7 point game at the half. But I agree, they deserved a 1 seed over North Central.Yet they get a 2 seed#2 Mount Union won 49-0 over St. Lawrence in the opening of the D3 playoffs today.

. Freaking cold, man.6 inches of fresh snow up here in the frozen tundra and playoff football. You D1 fans don't know what you're missing. This is going to be old school football in the frigid north. Have fun with your bowl games in pristine locations where whatever teams has the most athletes wins. Football was meant to be played outdoors in the elements.Sorry, I'm just bitter at D1 because the Gophers suck.Just got back from another epic D3 playoff game. God, I love D3 football.St. Thomas pulled off a 24-17 2OT thriller over Linfield. After both teams tried their damnedest to lose that game, the final two minutes and OT were thrilling. Linfield scores on a fourth down play with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 17. They then miss a 47 yard FG in OT (their third missed FG of the game), meaning the Tommies just have to move the ball a little bit to setup the game winning FG.Not so fast. Colin Tobin fumbles, Linfield recovers, and we're going to a second OT.It the second OT, Fritz Waldvogel makes a diving catch on third down in the end zone and the Tommies look like at worst they'll be headed to a third OT. Which looks likely as Linfield moves inside the 10. After a nice run, Linfield fumbles, the Tommies recover and they're moving on to the Quarterfinals for a second year in a row.And MIAC leaguemates Bethel will be their opponents. Should be a great game.Like I said last week, you beat the Tommies by making them pass. Linfield shut down the run game and Dakota Tracy threw four INTs and had a fifth nullified by a defensive penalty. Bethel has perhaps the best run D in the nation outside of Alliance, Ohio, which is how they limited the Tommies to 10 points the first time around. So they've got a shot. But Bethel's Achilles Heel is their kicking game. They're so bad, they aren't even guaranteed to make XPs. I love Bethel's style, their coach is a class act who turned around perhaps the worst team in D3. So I'm rooting for them. But I also wouldn't mind seeing the Tommies win so that Mount Union has to travel to Minnesota in Dec., something they've never had to do, even when my Johnnies were a better team than them. And Whitewater almost tumbled today, too. Tied at 31 in the third quarter? Man, I thought they'd cruise to the title, but they aren't the dominant defense I thought they were.
Record enrollment this year of 11,432 students. If I remember correctly enrollment was around 8,800 when I went there way back in the late70s/early 80s. And the stadium there is pretty awesome. So are the bars.linkNot sure how to find it out, but UWW is probably one of the biggest D3 schools. They have more students than TCU does and have a bigger stadium. They have 4x the enrollment that Mount Union does.
They don't have a bigger stadium, do they? It only seats 11,500? TCU has got to be bigger than that?I've always felt the WIAC should be D2. All those Wisconsin schools are the size of D2 schools, aren't they? Not sure how to find it out, but UWW is probably one of the biggest D3 schools. Whoops. Don't know where that came from. No they don't.They don't have a bigger stadium, do they? It only seats 11,500? TCU has got to be bigger than that?I've always felt the WIAC should be D2. That's why we're always so good (former UWW QB)Wisconsin doesn't have any D2 football schools....so if you want to stay state and aren't quite up to Badger par, than you have quite a few D2 calibre talents playing in a D3 program. We actually had a few D1 talents on my squad....one of my WRs was on scholarship at Michigan St. Total stud, but also total F-up with the law and attitude (hence why he was no longer a Spartan)They don't have a bigger stadium, do they? The division has nothing to do with the size of a school. It has to do with the number of athletic scholarships offered. DIII schools offer no scholarships.I could be mistaken but they do offer "athletic grants" though, no?I've always felt the WIAC should be D2. I know this is a year later, but that is pretty cool. I actually went to both schools (graduated from Wesleyan) and they were a blast to go to. One of my fondest memories was when our kicker missed a 29 yarder to end the half. For those not familiar with DIII, it is like small school H.S. games and the kids run around the field during the half. My hockey team was sharing a keg and our goalie joked that he could have made that kick. he was an ex-soccer goalie, and we had to prove it. In one shot, he got it done...we moved him back and he did it again. He finally missed on what people said was a 50 yarder...guy was so drunk he could barely stand (of course there was no pressure or team against him), but was still awesome.Love watching Div III football. I understand that. But D3 is for the most part made up of small, private schools with rigorous admittance standards. This may be ignorance on my part, but it just seems odd that the WIAC is in D3 - they don't have those same academic requirements do they? In MN, schools like UMD, SCSU, Bemidji, etc. are comparable to WIAC schools. They're all D2.I don't have a serious issue with it because it's just D3 football, but it seems odd.I've always felt the WIAC should be D2. My brother was an offensive lineman for Colby, and I had several friends who played football at Trinity. Love going to NESCAC games. Many great memories going to games. Some that I can't remember because I was drinking a little too much. Just very laid back atmosphere. Wesleyan is usually an interesting time. Went to one game and there were a bunch of students dressed up like Dracula, except it wasn't Halloween.I know this is a year later, but that is pretty cool. I'm surprised that UW made it this far this year. Their defense hasn't been up to par. Either way, this thread title might need to be changedSo Mount Union vs. Whitewater VI. Man, someone has to knock one of these teams off at some point, right? This is a crazy good run they've both been on.Gotta say, though, I like it. Makes for great football. Last year's game was so damn crisp. Those were two of the best coached teams on any level. They just execute so well - both of them. They don't make mistakes.
You get a free swampwater at the Pumping Station if you can do it...Great game. Some mistakes, but a lot of those mistakes were forced by good plays by the other team. 2 heavyweights punching and counterpunching. I think unfortunately some people expect to see Div I football being played. If these kids could get scholarships to play football, the vast majority wouldn't be playing in this game. Congrats to my Warhawks, and kudos to Mt Union for being there yet again. Also, try to say "Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks" 5 times fast...
Care to unpack this statement....not sure I'm getting it.I think unfortunately some people expect to see Div I football being played. If these kids could get scholarships to play football, the vast majority wouldn't be playing in this game.
Curious about opinions on something: Could these squads conceivably beat ANY FBS team? Even the dregs of C-USA (Tulane, Memphis), the MAC (Akron), or the Sun Belt (MTSU, Florida Atlantic)? If not, what's the highest level at which they can find an opponent that they could realistically beat? A mediocre FCS? A poor FCS team? The worst of the FCS teams? Do we have to dip down into Division II?#1 Wiscinsin Whitewater and #2 Mount Union are 1 win away from meeting for the 7th straight time for the Division III Title.
They might be able to hang with a team for a half, but depth/size would take over. Sort of similar to LSU against Western Kentucky this year. LSU was up 14-7 at the half and then size/speed/depth took over in the second half.It will be tough for them to hang with D2 teams since D3 can't give athletic scholarships. Maybe the really bad D2 teams.Curious about opinions on something: Could these squads conceivably beat ANY FBS team? I played at Whitewater. Many are D2 caliber athletes. If you want to stay in Wisconsin and play college football there are no D2 schools...so you're either top notch and go to Madison (Badgers), or you drop down to D3 level. In my situation I had the opportunity to walk on at Madison, get a D2 scholarship out of state or play D3 in state at Whitewater. I knew I wasn't going pro so opted for the in state Whitewater route. A few of my teammates played a year at Michigan St and Purdue, etc. and decided to play closer to home for various reasons. We couldnt compete with any D1 schools probably, but could hang tough with a number of D2 level schools I believe.Curious about opinions on something: Could these squads conceivably beat ANY FBS team? '95-'98. We were good, but not nearly as successful as the past 10 years.'Fightin Donkey said:What years?I played at Whitewater. Many are D2 caliber athletes.
