It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

I'm surprised the Payne/Del Toro vote is so close.

I'd easily watch Election again for the twentieth time. Or Sideways. Great flicks.

Now Nebraska is a must-see knowing that he did it.

del Toro-v-Payne is interesting to me as you are dealing with a big budget, special effects guy vs. a story first, somewhat indie type.  I appreciate Payne's work more but when del Toror hits on all cylinders I'm more entertained than with Payne's stuff.

Problem with del Toro is his inconsistency.  First Hellboy was okay to good in the fun department but the second was just tedious.  Pan's Labrynth is outstanding but Crimson Peak is a wasted project.  The topper for me, and why I voted for del Toro, is PAcific Rim.  Saw that with my wife and teenaged son and we had a blast.

Payne's work is always a rental for me as I know going in that I'm going to need a pause break to hit the head and grab a snack.  They are top quality stories filmed by a pro's pro of a director but I don't like to spend my hard earned cash on movies that don't pop.   I'll watch them and enjoy them but not at the theatre.

For my money, Del Toro might be the most overrated director in this whole thing.

I made sure that I didn't specifically mention seeing in the theater for this reason.  Feel free to vote that way, but it was more just a generic watching X movie.  It was more about the directors and their talents vs. what movies need to be watched on the big screen.

Maybe we just assume for the sake of it, that we all are watching it at home, have a great system, and aren't spending money on the movie.  It is just getting beamed to our house.

meh, I'd still be more interested in finding out about the new del Toro movie before the new Payne movie.  I have to make room in my schedule to watch the Payne films as they require time alone from the wife and kid who will definitely not watch with me.

If I'm home alone on a Saturday night it depends on my mood.  If I'm in slug mode I go for del Toro as there is the chance for some quality entertainment but if I'm  not overly tired and ready to sit still I'll go the Payne route because I know it will be high quality with usually good acting, great direction and strong story telling.

I have to say excellent matchups KP so far
They get tougher.

I didn't plan out how the matchups would look overall, I just tiered the directors and randomly put them in the divisions.  I will be interested to see if we will have many "upsets".  It looks like there might be matchups that put a more "artsy" director up against an action director.  I am curious how many will vote similar to how dutch voted in the matchup he was talking about.

It's a shame Wright will lose but he is one of the best directors for visual comedy Ive ever seen.  One of my favorites.

Spielberg vs. Snyder:

Come on, we knew how this one was going to end.  I do like that we had to have the one shtick vote for Snyder.  That said, I think Spielberg's great days are behind him.  I am not sure I would vote him for many more matchups.  Crystal Skull was terrible, and War Horse was pretty bad.  Lincoln and Bridge of Spies were good, but stuff he could do in his sleep.

Mendes vs. McQueen:

I am one of the 5 votes for McQueen and am surprised by this one.  Based on his first 3 movies, I think McQueen is as much of a 'must see' director as there is out there.  I would like reasons on this one for all those votes for Mendes.  Honestly didn't think this one would be as much of a blow out as it is.

Lynch vs. Wright:

This was a lot harder than I would have thought.  Ended up voting for Lynch, but it was more just me holding out hope he still has one more movie like Mulholland Drive in him.  I have loved just about everything Wright has done, and I know I would have a blast with that movie, but had to shoot for the stars with Lynch.

del Toro vs. Payne:

Another easy one for me.  I thought Crimson Peak was a bore and Pacific Rim was pretty bad.  Hellboy movies are kinda OK I guess.  Pan's Labyrinth was damn good.  Way too uneven for me.  Payne's movies have all been solid to great.

Bump. I'm not a big fan but surprised to see Zack as a 16 seed.
I will fully admit to this being kinda random.  I think he just kept sliding down as I did tiers - not as good as a couple other action directors on the list, and hasn't had the box office success that a couple others had either.

Snyder underseeded IMHO.

ETA:  Payne too, but I realize that's why they play the game.

Looks like after falling behind big early, Payne got a lot of late votes.
Glad to see that.  His films are actually my favorite, as a whole, in this bracket.  In addition to the 4 you listed, Citizen Ruth and About Schmidt are strong too. His next one, Downsizing, looks promising as well.

1. Voted Snyder.   Not ashamed of it.  Pretty much done with Spielberg, although I'd consider him a contender for GOAT director.  Lincoln sucked, btw.

2. Voted Mendes.  Haven't seen any of the McQueen movies.  You should have included a null vote option.  Jarhead was a very good adaptation of a very good book, imo.

3. Can't remember who I voted for, and don't care.  Both have had their moments, and I'm not expecting nor hoping for anything from either of them.

4.  Very tough matchup.  Went with del Toro just b/c I think there's the possibility of another epic film there.   Didn't see Crimson Peak.   Thought the Hellboys were far better movies than the Marvel/DC dreck that we're subjected to these days.
