Let's revisit what my intent with this tournament was:

We are voting on which one of the these director's movie you would want to see TODAY.  Of course past performance is part of the equation, but we should also be factoring in recent performance and what you think they will be doing in the future.  For the sake of the tournament, the ONLY information you have to decide between the two directors is something that reads "New Movie by _______".  There are no trailers, synopsis, or imdb page to look at.  I don't want it to be about theater experience either - what type of movies you usually pay for in the theater, etc..  I posted in one of the other threads this scenario: we all have the same home set up, so for the match pretend you get 2 blurays shipped to you in a blank case that reads "New movie by ______".  You have to pick one, and the other is destroyed MI style.

Clint's last couple of movies have been pretty mediocre. Love the guy but the run ends here. Fincher pulls it out, guy is a beast. Scott and Coen bros is a matchup of studs. Please end Wes Anderson's run.

I have no idea when Wes Anderson went from my favorite director who was an imperative must-see to someone I'm rooting against somehow, but he sure has gotten there.

Eastwood v. Scorsese feels like a match-up that came too soon.
I thought I was being too generous with Eastwood's seed as it was.  If it was just my rankings, he would have been lower.  Here are his last 6 movies:

American Sniper, Jersey Boys, J.Edgar, Hereafter, Invictus, Gran Torino

I don't see anything in there that was great, and a couple I thought were pretty bad.  I have been surprised at a few things during this tourney, and the votes that Eastwood has been getting is one of them.

Was it that back to back combo of Life Aquatic and Darjeeling?
I'm a big fan and I agree those were the low point.  At that time I was questioning whether Rushmore was just a brilliant fluke or if he would make anything great again.

But I loved both Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel so in my mind he's gold.  I really liked Fantastic Mr. Fox too.

I'll be voting for him against Scorcese if that's the way it shakes out, but I fully expect him to get curbstomped in that matchup.

:whoosh: Did you skip the Royal Tenenbaums?

Interesting.  I haven't seen it (don't like their comedies), but would be interested to hear what the difference is between HC! and the others.
Well, in looking over their filmography, I would say that I loved Raising Arizona, Fargo, Big Lebowski, O Brother, Intolerable Cruelty.

Kind of 'meh' on Ladykillers, Burn After Reading.  HC! was just boring.

Here I ended up going all chalk:

Scott vs. Coens:

I ended up shooting for the stars.  Scott's movies have been average to bad lately for me, and at least with the Coen's I have about a 50% chance of thinking it's great.

Soderberg vs. Fincher:

Now that PTA is gone, Fincher is my guy for the title.  I can't think of many directors that are as consistently great as he is.  I am a little nervous that he is becoming a gun for hire for books that need a dark adaptation and tone, but I have still always really liked his output.

Eastwood vs Scorsese:

I am not the biggest fan of Marty, but this was a no brainer.  He has been able to mix it up a bit lately and still put out good to great stuff.

O Russell vs. Anderson:

By far my least favorite choice of what is remaining.  Don't like either that much, but I guess I would find Wes' movie more "interesting" and fun to look at, even if I didn't enjoy it.

That was before Life Aquatic and Darjeeling so I didn't think it was relevant to the post.  I'd place it somewhere in the middle of his filmography.  I also didn't mention Bottle Rocket, which is awesome, although a lot less polished than all his movies that came afterwards.

Ah.  You had mentioned that you pondered whether Rushmore was fluke after seeing LA and Darjelling.  I say RT is every bit as good as Rushmore, so by the time LA rolls in, he's not just a one hit wonder.

I feel the same way - the quirky style suddenly got old.   I blame The Life Aquatic.

I thought Fox and Moonrise were great, but I haven't cared for his style since then.

That's a pretty big chance to see a great movie.   They're much more hit or miss for me than directors like Fincher or Scorsee, but I'll still take them to the finals in the hopes of getting another Fargo or NCFOM.

You are heading too much into the darkness. Head for the light, my friend.  :)

You are gravitating toward the dark themed movies. Come back into the light.
I always have for whatever reason.  Just interests me more, I guess.  Most of my favorites each year are dramas, very few are comedies or action movies.  I have gotten better lately as I watch more stuff with my son though.
